On her way to the ship, Sami picked up a box of equipment slated for her, containing, amoung other things, A laser welder. She carried it with her to where she was sitting before and placed the box in an empty seat next to her.

"This is going to be a long two years..."

Some of the more notable things in the box are a GSO latex spacesuit and a radio transmitter/ communcator device. It 's connected to the ship's computer  and allows one to have private converstations with those on earth. All signals are transmitted via the ship's transmittor aray. The GSO garantuees that the connection is secure and completly private.

A cheerfull computer voice comes out of the speakers.
" The Mark II latex spacesuit was originally developed by GSO scientist for use outside the Lunar Helium-3 Mines. It allows a user more freedom of movement and is more resistant to falls and other accidents. Your spacesuit is made of a new latex formula that allows it to automatically plug holes, thereby ensuring the prolonged survival of humans in space. Please note that the GSO Mark II latex suit does not include radiation protection or kinetic impact negation and should only be worn above protective clothing. I'm an Eddie, your Shipboard computer, and I'm pleased to have been of use."

"Always at your service, commander. Your flight will depart for Earth orbit as soon as a large enough hole has been found in the earth debris layer. I have noted that you are the first crewmember to arrive at the Orbiter. The OpenGPAI has already arrived and has been loaded into the MCS(Mars colinization ship).

Also I'd like to add that you can trust me always, implicitly."

P.N: I need a better name for the ship, so I'm going to create a poll.

(Upon arriving at the MCS)

The airlock door opened, and Schilcote yanked the bungie cords off of himself with his manipulators. As the cargo spaceplane's crew began to unload the other cargo, Schilcote rolled out and onto the ship.

An extremely cheery male voice came through Schilcote's internal radio transceiver.

"Hi, I'm Eddie, your shipboard computer! Welcome to the Mars Colonization Ship!"

"Oh Babbage," Schil thought, "did they really make an AI based on the character from that old radio series? And then put him in charge of a 2 year space mission?"

I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.

Nathaniel tapped his fingers against his thigh, the gel that surrounded him in the upright tank made the gesture come out with exaggerated slowness. His nose itched strongly inside the breathmask that kept him alive inside the tank, wearing a full face helmet for anything always seemed to make his nose or ears itch intolerably.
Of course floating nearly weightless in the tank beat being crushed to death and unable to breathe in the full might of earth's gravity, even if his nose did feel like it was undergoing civil war.

The tank had been bolted into the floor of the spaceplane in lieu of a seat, a friendly accommodation seeing that it was the company that made him take the trip down to earth to have his physical and psychological condition examined in the first place. Why on earth he couldn't have boarded with the GSO specialist was beyond him.

Stirring in the tank he shuffled his teeth around until he could bite the on switch for the tank's comm system. "Eddie, approximately how long until this bloody shuttle docks with you? I am in dire need of a shower and walk."

"Oh yeah, I should probably have read that PDF on the ride... ah well, I'm going to be waiting a while for the squishies to arrive anyhow. Let's see here... Oh sweet, I get my own room with an observation deck! Kinda makes me feel bad for the humans, but I guess the women can always come share it with me."

Boris stands in front of the massive windows of his loft, looking down at the street below. There is a driving swirl of snowflakes, and he can barely see the street twenty stories below him. Sixteen days until he heads to his fourth mission in space. He looks at his watch, and then crouches down on his knees.

He says in a resolute fashion, to noone in particular : "Exercise. Soon you will be in zero G.. you will grow weak."

He manuevers himself into a push up position, and slowly starts doing pushups.
"One.. two... drei..."

He stops his set of pushups, and walks over to the sleek black glass countertop and picks up a magazine. It's dated 2041, and it's a mining industry magazine, written mostly by and for miners. Most wouldn't pay much attention to it, but everyone would immediately recognize Boris' interest in it. His picture is on the cover, along with the headline "Last Coal Seam in Western Europe Discovered!". Underneath it, in somewhat muted text, "Boris Anchova will unveil world's largest digger at the site opening".

He drops the magazine, and thoughts filled his brain. East Germany. Four years of searching, everyone desperate for any trace of fossil fuels. There were a billion people in the Eastern half of Asia who didn't have enough renewable infrastructure, and 2041 had the beginnings of the coldest weather in forty years. When Boris stumbled upon the seam by accident, it was almost a national celebration for Germany, and he was a hero almost everywhere. He'd found a seam big enough to fire back up the remaining fossil plants for almost ten more years. It is no exaggeration to think that a million people would be saved by this discovery.

In order to get production moving as fast as possible, the German government had created an excessively large machine, ones that made the likes of Bagger 293 look small. And he was going to be the one to drive it's massive buckets into the seam.

He looked away from the magazine in disgust. That was the past. Miners had no place on Earth anymore, as there simply wasn't enough of anything worthwhile. Even after his failure at the coal fields in 2041, he was still offered a job by the GSO to be one of the first extraterrestrial prospectors.

Boris silently takes a GSC coffee mug from the cupboard and prepares himself some tea, contemplating the snow outside.

Tomorrow there would be an interview with a prominent Moscow newspaper, and a few training exercises at the cosmodrome. This was going to be his longest mission.

The spaceport is a rather desolate place, consisting of nothing more than a smal harbour and 2 concrete runways (4km each). There are almost no planes as this place is mostly used for emergency landings and special GSO projects. The entire airport is surrounded by 10 m floodwall which seems to be in a minor state of disrepair. Almost all terminals have been abandoned after closure of GSO last engineering departement in the area. Nowadays most of GSO affairs are being handled in space and the physical and psychological tests at the GSO Hawaian Vulcano observatory, once GSO's main research center, are just an old tradition.

There was a small reception in the main lobby, and all that's left is waiting for the Spaceplane to take off against the night sky, filmed by 6 robotic cameras. Since this place doesn't even have a tower anymore, you're waiting on the GSC(Global Space Control) for permision.

P.S:Backstory bump
P.P.S:Can everyone please get to the ship, not that I disapprove of the flash-back stuff but I'd like to able to get everyone in the same place so you can talk and roleplay and stuff.
P.P.P.S: Feel free to add to the backstory of earth, just see that you don't conflict will something else

Do you still have that spot open? If so, I am so taking it. Sheet up later.

'Course with Dwarf Fortress, the only relevant question is, "How far away will the ASCII gibs splash on landing?"
5 squares per limb, if you raise the north orthoclase bridge before sacrificing one of them so they have a straight shot to the bottom of the chasm.

Ah well, I'm strapped into a tube of new-tech toothpaste waiting for launch so I've got nothing to do.

I did ask our friendly onboard computer a question though.
