* Battle for Wesnoth Thread III *
I'm currently leading a rewrite project for this gem of an open-source game, and I noticed that the previous Wesnoth threads have dropped off the radar.

I'm here to offer any installation/unit/SP-campaign/multiplayer advice I have, direct you to somewhere you can find better advice, host multiplayer games/tourneys, and generally answer any questions you have about the game.

Wesnoth is fun. I just don't play it much anymore.

What's the purpose of the rewrite?

Also, are there any undead-focused campaigns of respectable length? Just haven't been able to get very into Descent into Darkness for some reason.

This gem saved me during a particularly tight (financially) summer. I don't really check up on it's community or anything but it certainly has a place in my heart. If I weren't already swamped with a backlog of games to play I'd give it an install, but I'm afraid it'll have to wait awhile.

And yes, care to expound a bit on the rewrite?

I've got this game sitting in my hard drive. It's fun, though I've learned that the percentages are filthy LIARS.

"Ha! I've got an 80% chance to hit and the enemy only has 30%. Easy kill!"

What's the purpose of the rewrite?
The rewrite is to fix what is in my opinion the game's sole 'true weakness' when you evaluate it's execution against its intentions: sophomoric prose. A minor point for most players. I'm making slow progress through each of the core SP campaigns.

Dare I add, poor prose is also an execution-vs-intentions weakness exhibited (at times) by DF as well.
(...I volunteer?)

Also, are there any undead-focused campaigns of r alsotable length? Just haven't been able to get very into Descent into Darkness for some reason.
Well, afaik DiD is still the only mainline undead capaign; you might also search the wiki Campaigns List page for "undead".  Of course, there are so many campaigns that many are no longer being maintained at the latest stable release (v1.8.6). I would check the user-made campaign server for undead-related campaigns that are stable and highly-rated under the version you have.

Ah yes.  I think we call the emotions resulting from that event "RNG rage".  While I love wesnoth, I will admit: the density of my profanity invariably rises when I play it. For Fun reasons, of course.

Learning how to manage risk is probably the hardest part of learning to play.  Once you've got that down you can pretty much walk through the campaign without losing more than two guys a mission.

I also thought a lot of the game's prose and dialog was bad.  It breaks immersion when you're constantly thinking "Ugh, why would they say that?"

There are story bits that could enjoy an improvement, too. In particular,

I can't say I've noticed very much bad dialogue, at least not compared to some of the other stuff I've seen.

What I tend to do (I'm only in the beginner campaign) is bring along plenty of loyal troops. They tend to be stronger than new default soldiers, and I don't have to pay for their upkeep. Two of them are peasants which never get any exp if I can avoid it, and are healed right away if they get hurt. My goal is to have them survive the campaign as "those two guys".

Truly an excellent game, and It's free!

My biggest complaint about the game is tactics related. I dislike how the leader (commander?) unit plays an insignificant role on the battlefield, and is mostly just left lying around in the base to spawn units. In my opinion, the leader unit should be on the battlefield leading the troops, in the fun! More exciting that way. This complaint is restricted to random maps. As I recall you had to be more proactive with your leaders in the story campaigns which I admittedly did few of.

Whining aside, I've gotten many hours of fun out of this game for not even a penny.
