There's Allegiance, which is free, but it's multiplayer-only.

This is a good one that hearkens back to older space sims.  It's one hell of a learning curve, though; those guys take things seriously.

After checking out the website, Evochron looks quite interesting actually. Will see if I experience the same loss of interest after a while.

Eve I did play for a while during the Goonswarm vs Bobby Brown epoch but it got far too repetitive after a while. The high points really owned but those high points were far too far between.

On the whole, thanks good folk, I got quite a few games to check out now, some of which I have not ever heard of before.

If exploration is all you want and you can get past the graphics: Noctis.

It's amazing.

I'm checking out pioneer after the recommendations in this thread.

Star control II is basically about exploring the galaxy and establishing and resolving diplomatic issues. There's a free open source reboot being developed too.

Whilst it's not even got any decent programming behind it yet, I do intend to create a decent Space sim-exploration game, Via Stella, as soon as possible.

Starfarer is awesome.  Well worth the $10 even for the current alpha build.  Eventually it will become a top-down Elite style fleet management/space trading sim.  The combat model is awesome, it looks great, and commanding fleets is great!

You can find it at www.fractalsoftworks.com.  It's a two-man operation and the development and design is very open.

You could just try playing that one freelancer mod (The one that people play) online forever.

Darkstar One was one of the first games that popped up in my mind after reading the OP. It's a bit arcadey but it pulled me in and kept me occupied throughough the whole ride ^^ It was over before I knew it and I had spend +/- 15 hours on it, could've done it faster though but I loved the RPG-aspect of the game.

I'm surprised no one said Space Rangers. While the universe is mostly mapped out, exploring it retains its excitement. The stabilizability of the ships is great too, shame they only come in fighter size though. I would have love to fly around a modified freighter that actually felt like a freighter.

Also, Star Wolves III is quite good if you're into the combat.

I probably shouldn't taunt anyone with games that are only in development, but if you can check out infinity online. It probably deserves its own post but you should definitely watch this tech demo the creator made in 2010.

Infinity Pre-Alpha Tech Demo

Make sure to watch the whole thing through, or at least till he flies down to the planet.

Interesting to see that seems to be being developed again.  I was under the impression it was in development hell, since the first version of that video was five years ago.

The classics are always the best.

Frontier. Insane amount of exploration, combat, trading, mining, military missions, whatever you want. You can pass the eiffel tower and fly into the sun.

The OpenGL version has a bug that the space map isn't clickable, so just press F2 instead.

Sadly I would say Frontier is too old when it comes to 3D, I can't stomach that kind of graphics anymore. If it's an older game I would prefer it to be 2D like Star Control 2.
