That game has an very active and talented community that keeps releasing new models and campaigns with quality ofter surpassing that of the original.

Because the games engine was released modders and scripters were able to add many modern graphical effects to the old game. Their recent results can be seen in these videos:

Oh yes I have played the Freespace 2 kind-of-a-fan-remake, it is absolutely glorious, I never finished it though cause the computer I had my saves on decided to up and die some time back and I have not been arsed to start from the beginning yet.

I've tired some rather obscure and very underrated space games, to satisfy my unending hunger, one of them is Space Force - Rogue Universe (http://www.spaceforce-game.com/news2.aspx), it has basic economy/commerce, good battles, races, ships and the like, is combat oriented but has also a very good exploration/prospecting side. The developer is pretty much dead, and the publisher is too if I remember correctly, but is available on Steam at a ludicrous price
The other one I like to mention is Parkan II (http://www.1cpublishing.eu/game/parkan-2/overview), it's a strange mix of space exploration with an FPS, you can explore a variety of planets, do some space combat, and conquer planets during basic FPS sections. I don't know why, but even if it was a little repetitive, I fount it enjoyable in the end.

Well, Evochron Mercenary just came out not too long ago on Steam.  It's been available for almost a year now off the official website though.

I bought it and played it for about 4 hours.  It's not bad considering it was made by one dude.  However, something about it just lacks.  I can't quite put my finger on it but it feels a little soulless.
