Odd: no screen for small version

I wanted something to run in the background while I was rereading some things for school.  I'm on the lab machines (I'll dig for details if they're needed.)  I down loaded the small version and one of the pregen maps.  I tried starting the small version as both full screen and mini versions.  DF processes ran, but the game never opened.

Then I tried it with the full game.  That works fine.

Sounds like a file besides the sound is missing, since I know the latest small version works ok for patching, as that's what I used.

Hrm, the small version works for me...  I'm not sure what's going on.
