[176.38a] merchants caught in cage traps
« on: February 16, 2008, 01:54:00 pm »

Human merchants came to my fort and three (including the baron) got caught in cage traps.  I have had cage traps before but I have never had merchants get caught in them, so I assume this is a new bug.  They all immediately went berserk (but they are locked in the cages, so no big deal).  I tried to release them but I keep getting this message:  "Dwarfy McDwarf, Animal Trainer cancels Releasing Large Creature:  Need empty cage."

I do have empty cages, but I don't know why you would need one to release a creature.

In the meantime, I guess I have some nice additions to my zoo.

Yea... stonefall traps also work on merchants now.

This also works on the elf merchants  :(

I guess not being able to release them is a bigger problem than getting trapped in the first place.

I like the idea of traps working on humans/elf - it is logical. Now you have to plan your defenses so traders and elves can come through safe route.

Yeah, traps seem to be working against friendly merchants now: http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=002908

Except its not uncommon for the trade liason to go on a tour through your fortress, or follow the broker around trying to get a meeting... this is gonna cause major problems till toady fixes it.

Agreed.  But I hope my dwarves can manage that in the next week before the elves come.  Otherwise, I'll have to send them off to the execution chamber with all those trapped goblins.

Also, if you have more than one entrance to your fortress, traders will often try to go through it on their way from one end of the map of the other.

This is a good thing.

Maybe so, but it breaks existing fortresses.  And it was clearly not intentional, as Toady made no mention of it in his dev notes.  It needs to be fixed or made optional.

Liasons chase the broker all over the map, inevitably getting themselves caught somewhere.

So, the elves came.  On their way in, no problem.  On their way out, they got caged.  Being elves, they went melancholy instead of berserk, of course.

If you build the cage and link it to a lever, will the mechanical release work?

Also, blocking off trapped areas with locked doors should work fine, I think.

And one more reason not to rely on traps so much.

Traps do work against merchants now... a bunch of elves just died.
