every time the dworf caravan hauls around with loads of booze and the trades take place the EL runs to the outskirts of the map avoiding the liaison only stopping for the trade negotiations only when backed into a corner assigned a burrow or one interesting case lead the liaison into a herd of giant Capybara that promptly ate the liaison as my Expedition leader fled (the one that got the killing blow got a name) any explanation for this? the other caravans don't have this problem he is prompt ( as prompt as any dwarf i suppose)

In older versions, nobles were all "lazy" - meaning that they avoided menial work, and tended to focus on their noble duties, as well as a whole lot of breaks.  More lately this seems to have been removed from most nobles, so now, if you want to make sure your nobles do their jobs, you pretty much need to turn all other labors off.  Also make sure that your nobles have their requirements met (like offices) or they are a lot less effective.

This was only true of the real nobles - the expedition leader is always a "working" dwarf, and the same has been true of the Mayor since the game first went 3D.
