Made an effort to show lighting. It kinda worked?
Any critiques greatly appreciated, as with everything I post.
Edit: Apologies for bad camera/angle. Didn't realise it was as bad as it is, heh.
Not bad! A few things, though:
- Moar contrast! If it's sunlight, the contrast is
super harsh, so much so that it's actually often understated in drawings because it dominates the visuals so much. Still, this is a bit too much in the opposite direction.
- Can't quite tell if you've done it, but stroke direction for shading is also important, it should follow the contours of the form you're shading. When smudging, ideally do the same with those strokes; it's a really subtle effect, but it pushes the appearance a notch upwards.
- That one hair strand has the shadow on the wrong side of it. I also feel like the hair should have softer, more flowing curves to it, but i don't know how the reference looks, if any.
- Facial anatomy and proportions are good! The ear just needs some more love though, the shape is a bit off and is underdetailed to the point of looking more like a scoop. I'm not so cruel as to expect ears to be fully detailed all the time, but just a little lining of the bigger details goes a long way.
Otherwise doing good! Definitely registers as a realistic human face without falling into the uncanny valley. :v
