I come bearing a technical question to the art peoples: is there a way (on photoshop or any other program) to iteratively fill space?

e.g. Let's say I've got a thousand boxes in photoshop, they all have hard pixel borders, could I some how fill each with a random color? Without having to fill all 1000 by hand?

You'd have to delve into coding to get anything like that, i'm afraid, at least to my knowledge. If you were to make identical copies, you could just make a pattern, and in a few other use cases you could also make a brush that laid down randomly coloured boxes, but these are both very situational and primarily useful for texturing (e.g. bricks). Beyond that though, art programs aren't terribly smart. :v

Thanks peeps, that's a pain. Maybe I will take a look a scripting, but some people over on the photoshop support forum basically said the only way to do it would to b to separate every shape into a different layer. To get things on topic and end this here is what I was working on:




EU4 map. The modding process is a little messy, but it's actually quite accessible (and a total blast for worldbuilding that ends with a playable game experience!). The annoying part is all those different provinces have to be a different RGB color... which is a pain in the ass.

Mussels. Not totally random, wrote a Kvaksulu fairy tale/poem about them, and they're pretty common motif in the nation.

Heroic party of the ancient Tatans, going on quest to acquire a powerful weapon capable of slaying a monster ravaging their lands. I was thinking of sort of a legendarium for the Romadoore universe, and decided to draw some of it, so all of these are on spot made up designs. And I've might accidentally created the ultimate character.

I can't get over this guy, he's just priceless. Needed to draw more of him.

This deservedly became a meme format in my friend circle, has quite a potential.
