We're already four days in, but the yearly Art Fight is happening in the month of July, and I'll participate. If you participate aswell, please say so, so I can draw your character. Right now it's the best way to get free art from me, for those interested.

Here's my page.

I'm going to draw a lot of pictures. Let's go !

Is this a seahorse, no matter what it is it's pretty cool looking.

Yeah, the shrimps are straight up stolen from Dominion. Well. Redrawn from a 6/4 sprite but yes I am incapable of original ideas

Also yes it is an olm but part of me wants him to ride a seahorse to battle now... Maybe next year?

Anyway, artfight is still a go

It's been a while of slowly chipping away at building the engine for it, but I finally released the first playable demo of Redlander!

The game is pretty minimalist, 100% HTML/JS based, and runs natively on the web, so it should run on just about any machine. Touchscreen support is still incomplete, and there are some audio artifacts in Firefox, but elsewise the dang thing finally works. I'm so happy!

If retro rustpunk sci-fi puzzle platformers are your thing, feel free to check it out:
- Playable demo is here!
- Devlog with some screenshots is here

What I said in the devlog aside... I've really enjoyed animating in 8x8 pixel 1bit pixel art, and making environments out of a limited pool of 2-color tiles. Also, building platformer movement and puzzle mechanics in a strictly tile-based game has inspired some movement and design decisions I probably wouldn't have made in a higher-def game... but they're mechanics I really like the feel of TBH?

P.S. I'm a vain creature who thrives on feedback and kind words, so if you do play it, lemme know how you like it!

I really like the direction you've gone with the art.

I think that from what I've seen you should charge money for the finished product of this. Slap it on steam man.

Or at least give it it's own thread, it deserves to have more eyes on it. :v

I really appreciate the kind words, and I'm glad you liked it! I'm taking a short break from Redlander for work and burnout's sake, but I'll be working on it again soon. Maybe I'll make a thread too, I'unno!

Also, it might sound weird, but I actually don't want to charge for this project. The free game ecosystem of the early internet was really important to me as a young person without much means, and a non-ideal home environment... and part of my philosophy with making games is to make them low-tech, broadly accessible, and fund what I can via donations, so that I don't have to paywall 'em. Right now, the project is funded by my Patreon, and I've applied for some no-strings-attached grants, so I can afford to put more time into it and keep it free. It's important to me to do so!

P.S. I'm never selling or hosting anything on Steam ever again. For a series of controlling and exploitative reasons that don't bear getting into in this thread, that platform is hell for small devs. Itch.io is my home for a reason!

I really like the direction you've gone with the art.
Aww, thank you! I've kinda fallen in love with 1-bit pixel art, and it's 100% this project's fault. I'm even using it in 3D now... it's a problem.

Fair enough, only reason to use steam over itch would be a bigger userbase.
