I think I will push your pixel art through my plotter software with some 'extended gamut* '(ahem) marker pens, and see what comes out.

For reference, CGA can only use 4 colors at a time, out of 16 possible, selected from 4 pre-defined palettes.

Ah, yes, I'm aware of how many colors CGA & EGA can display at a time. That was pretty obvious even as a ten year old with one glance at the monitor.

CGA actually looked quite decent with a monochrome monitor... Or, well, that is if you get over the whole monochrome aspect, which wasn't a problem when you hadn't seen anything else.

..Anyway, what I guess I've been referring to as the palette is the color scheme then (and old EGA games mostly used the (default?) 16 color selection I posted above)? (I'm not a native English speaker, so there's that too.)

I made another EGA Lucas/Sierra style piece for the DF game. The ghost is based on LeCheck (MI1) & Rusty (Loom) sprites:


(The "zombie" ravens don't really stand out and get lost in the background. I'll maybe try to fix them at some point, but likely not.)

Those screens are really cool.  The aesthetic seems very fitting for Dwarf Fortress too, though I can't quite put my finger on why.

The default Dwarf Fortress color scheme uses the same 16 colors. Maybe that's one reason?

I'm honestly surprised how quick these come out when I start working.

I mean, I'm normally super slow (compared to, say, professional artists): drawing a A4 sized black&white picture takes several days for me, add to that coloring, so a color picture can take over a week easily. These... Well, they come in a day or two.

Do you use a specific pixel-art centered program, or just MSPaint?

Seeing these, makes me wish I had the time to spend doodling pixels again.  Sadly, THE VERY INSTANT I TRY TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT, I get lambasted by old people who have sudden and relentless "Needs" to use the toilet, and cannot get "in the zone" to do anything.

(Or, I get lambasted by charge nurses who think I have nothing better to do, and given a honey-do list.)

I pine for the days when I was an industrial draftsman, and had time after completing my work assignments, and a nice, quiet cubicle.

I'm using GrafX2. It's the closest I've found with the feel and interface of Deluxe Paint, which I played quite a lot with as a kid.

I've found that more modern programs with their fancy UIs and other such useless garbage QoL things are not nearly as well-suited for pixeling as, well, a program that was specifically designed for a 320x200 resolution.
