Since this is "random" things you made thread...

I have gotten a fair bit of work in on a "vacation rental" townhouse model.

Bear in mind, this is a mockup. I intend to actually make real plans for it. As such, there are no furnishings and no textures. Also, warning: large images, small filesizes.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It is intended to be very small, in line with real townhouses.

Do the upstairs bedrooms have windows? It seems like roof windows would fit perfectly to the right of the closets, but I don't see any. And where will the beds go in those rooms? I fired up my profoundly professional design software (Paint) to visualize.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If so, I'd move the door to the left. It's more comfortable to walk into a room and not immedialty bump into the bed. And additionally to that, you'd receive some additional free space, marked gray. All just pointers, I'd like to hear your design decisions.

I assume you haven't inherited a plot of land, just doing some architecturing for fun, right? And we as DF players take fun proper seriously. Is the layout already final? Have you worked out your cardinal directions, supporting structures, foundation, beam orientation etc? Without that I wouldn't set the layout in stone yet.

I've read a great book titled along the lines of "So you wanna build your own house?" (in German, mind). Filled to the brim with useful information, much of which greatly affects the design process. You explicitely stated you wanna build small, what's your motivation for that? I assume saving building costs. There are a lot of factors besides size and thus material needs. I see you've deliberatly used as few window- and door-types as possible. That's a great thing to do!

The super teeny-tiny rooms upstairs have just enough room for a twin bed without being hit by the door. It is 6.5 feet (sorry, live in the US. About 2 meter?) distance from the wall with the entry door, to the wall with the drawer build-ins. The bed goes on the left when entering the room, so it goes something like this:

O============O
|(drawers)__(closet)|
|-------------|           |
|                           |
|-------------            |
|               |           |
|               |           |
| (bed)       |           |
|               |           |
|               |           |
|-------------| (Door) |
O=======O        O

It will be a tight squeeze with the bed, but it SHOULD fit.  No windows on 2 of the rooms. One room is privileged to get an actual window. The other two will have to have framed mirrors installed to combat claustrophobia. There really isnt room to "play" in those rooms. You aren't supposed to actually LIVE in this house, since it is a vacation rental. Week stay. That kind of thing. If there is bad weather, and kids need to play, there is the well lit hall just outside their rooms, the dining room downstairs, and the livingroom downstairs. (parents may not like the kids playing near the attic ladder area, even though there is room there, and a window.)

Yes, this is just for fun.  I like making little houses and other solid models from time to time to kill the monotony at work.

Next up: cabinetry for the kitchen and drawers to put in the drawer pulls.

As for "Why so small?", the answer is that "Small" is challenging, and because it better fits the theme, which I also picked for the challenge.

Townhouses like this one are usually packed elbows to assholes next to each other, so small and tall is simply the way they are made.  See for instance, Telluride Colorado:

It is a ski resort town (amongst other things) nestled into a box canyon. Because it is inside a box canyon, realestate is at a premium, so the buildings are as tall and skinny as possible. Note all the townhouses in the background, and the same theme being carried over to the 3 unit condo in the foreground. Note how densely packed they are.

I always thought the old one was holding his hands behind his back, like he's a servant.

... Kobold Jeeves could be something to draw.

this is gnoll archer

the same gnoll archer that has appeared twice in my silly comics now

but in PSEUDOGLORIOUS SEMI-HD instead of stickstyle

Only pseudo because i messed up just about everything, but hell, it's the first time i've ever drawn a gnoll with that level of detail. :P

That's a lovely sallet, but shouldn't the bevor go all around the neck? Or at least have some chainmail extending behind to give the back of the neck more protection? The visor looks lovely, though.

Yeah, there would be mail there, I was just too lazy to draw it. This is part of some concept drawings I'm doing for some gothic armour I will eventually be making, when I get the space and tools.

I don't know what exactly happened in my brain...

Have you been reading the SCP website? This, uhrm, humanoid thing looks like an SCP object.
Probably a Keter-class SCP object.
Probably a Keter-class SCP object that randomly kills people.
