My cousin loves dragons, so for Christmas I thought I'd model one and 3D print it for her. So far, I've got the concept sketch done.

Any obvious design improvements? It's supposed to be an ice dragon, but I'm not sure if I'm doing enough to fit that theme.

snip
the ice crystals on the chin are understated, I only noticed them after I read a bit further and looked for features, but if this is a 2d version changes can be transferred over to that

also, maybe some icicles on the back, poking backwards just to increase the overall dispersion of ice, rather than it being all in the front? though dragons aint real so I don't know how exactly you want the level of ice

I can't put in too much fine detail floating above the body because the scaffolding would ruin it. That's why, for example, the horns are facing more or less straight up. I tried to make a snowflake pattern at the tail tip, but it didn't come out that well in the sketch. I'll definitely expand that and maybe have snowflakes sticking out along the spine as well.

Lol no! It's actually pretty cool ! Just the proportions are off. The facial features should cover a bit less space and be more "gathered" in the center of the face. Nose should be raised, mouth too to leave a place for the chin, eyes should be lowered a bit so she has a full forehead. It's all good, all the features are well drawn, but they are to the wrong place :D

Edit : Here I just moved the facial features around a little bit

All you need is to construct your drawings and you'll skyrocket my friend

Ah, proportion. My old nemesis...

Also: Ah, Cathar. My new nemesis ;)

As for smudging, it's all well and good on the computer, but trying to do it with a physical copy always goes badly for me.

Get a smudge stick, or some tissues for that, also make sure you've planned the thing out beforehand since correcting it is a bit of a chore unless you have the proper tools (really want one of those rad electric spinny erasers).
Also make sure you've got a clean surface to put between your drawing arm and the paper (another piece of folded paper is good) since that's the quickest way to ruin a graphite sketch.
Also also, when shading, make sure you take account of relative value of the shadow when compared to other shadows. In your case the little pool under the nose has no right being darker than the neck or eye shadows, kinda makes her look hitler-y too xD

So, I take it in that image you smudged, right? How did you draw it in before smudging? As lines, or as one big ol' blob? You've got nice exact changes in the darkness of different bits, it's not just one all-the-same mass of greyness.

(Also, great drawing)

You can also do it with your finger, but it takes a bit of practice. I'd say the most important (if you want fast improvement) is to construct your drawings imho. Smudging is a great way to improve beyond that, but not that necessary, I just did that because I wanted to see if I could, and because I think you're selling yourself short. Tis a good drawing, lot of potential

Ah, Cathar. My new nemesis

Finger smudging is problematic because of skin oils and their tendency to fuck with erasability of stuff, so do it with super clean fingers only.

And yes I smudged, but that was like, last and second to last step of the whole thing. I personally start with super loose lines to get an idea of the whole thing then work details in gradually before applying shading and smudging with a final pass of detail work to bring out certain parts or fix stuff that maybe got smudged.

Another neat thing with smudge sticks is that once they get dirty enough you can use them as a poor mans copic marker for laying in super light blobs of value or lines that can help get a feel for the volume of an object but don't really affect the final outcome since they become practically invisible after you've started to lay in some proper linework and shading.
