I wonder if it could be done with a shiv-squad?  I think if I had to re-do it, id send a sacrificial shiv to the ship.  Maybe the whole squad could be them?

Gash. I just had a notice that some Newfoundland village has gone dark. And I don't even have enough laser weapons to equip my full squad.

What are the consequences of giving up on the mission?
It's doable with ballistics, at least on Normal if you have a Colonel squad.

Just as a bit of tactical advice - LEG IT. You'll know when, just Dash the fuck away, don't try to Overwatch unless with a R&G assault.

Colonel squad? I have 3 sergeants and the rest are Corporal (Long war, so Lieutenant/Sergent for Vanilla equivalent). I also only have 7 troopers.

I think St John's will have to deal with it alone.

I've only done it with ballistics, but last time I think I had grappels.

The nids can still reach you just as easily, but you can move much faster with all the rooftops available.

I'm frankly dissapointed that ignoring it isn't an instant-kill on Canada.

'Only' 7. xD

If you're not playing Ironman, save and give it a shot, it might be fun and worst case, you'll just reload.

Shotgun infantry, shotgun assaults, shotgun engineers, more shotgun infantry, just bring like six guys with shotguns, and maybe a rocketeer.

As I recall, it requires a human to activate the control in the ship. SHIVs, and I think MECs, are not able to activate it.

I think you can. SHIVS (and even captured drones) can collect meld so i don't see a reason they couldn't interract with other objects.

SHIVs can collect meld, but in several key cases they're insufficient. Activating the beacon in the fishing village, opening valves on the dam, etc. They can secure meld and I think disarm bombs, but not do the story-mission stuff.

I'm pretty sure I used SHIV's to open the valves on the dam once.

I didn't have major problems with ballistics and a non-Colonel squad on Long War Classic, but by that point, I knew enough to creep.  Unlike certain other missions, there's no hard or soft time limit, which means you can take your time.

Or... get on that engine block and camp. by standing near the edges you block the chryssies attempts at jumping up to you and force them to go around the engine.
if you do it this way its possible even with 4 troopers (altho i recommend more).

Then you activate the beacon and run like hell.
Admitedly the person activating the beacon should have sprinter or at least light armor. Especially on classic where chryssalids can catch a dashing soldier with their blue move.

Yeah, you can actually clear the mission by killing all of the whale spawns. I think Beagle put out a video on the method.

That said, going that route needs a pretty different team. When I do it normally I use two snipers and the rest shotgun assaults + one SMG scout to activate the beacon and leg it.

I did it with 4 people rocking balistics in vanilla classic.
2 rifles and 2 LMG.
Altho admitedly one LMG had bullet swarm and i had to help myself with a rocket and grenader grenade (4 damage) towards the end but its doable. Well unless you have less than 3 people rocking a LMG, rifle or shotgun (the sniper rifles can camp at the top.
