Multiplayer.

why.........
You realize the original game had a mod for multiplayer, don't you?
Wasn't that a complete conversion, rather then a mod. (Depends on if you're referring to the same thing I'm referring to, because if that's so, this is just a skimish multiplayer, no campaign.)

I don't see why anyone would complain about multiplayer in Xcom, that sounds cool.

Also, guys seriously, Sergius' achievements are... clearly legit. Yes.

Yeah, multiplayer sounds great to me. If anything, my gripe would be that they added a little deathmatch thingy just for fun and nothing else. Aliens vs humans I could see being difficult to implement, but you could hack it by letting another player control alien units and leaving strategy/mission generation alone. Co-op would be pretty simple squad-wise and might be very difficult base/interception wise, but I'd think it could still be done.

Though, hopefully there'll be mods for all that anyway.

I hate stupid, illogical stuff like that. Why would another soldier be unable to wield a shotgun?

Because he's a cleric, not a rogue.

Wait...

Ok, joking aside, I think they already explained why they did this "training needed" instead of managing actual weapon stock in the base (you have unlimited of everything, but not everyone can use everything).

It's not that illogical. When you become a marine they don't ask you what gun you want every time you walk out the door. Generally things like Light Machine Guns and Marksmen Rifles are handed out to specialist in a squad.  For example: A Marine Fire Squad is made up of a Rifleman, a Grenadier, an assistant Light Machine Gunner, and the actual Light Machine Gunner.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Between you and me, if you can handle an assault riffle, i think you should also be able to handle a noobgun err shotgun....

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

I believe the rationale is not that you can't handle one. They ain't giving you one :D

You could probably rationalize it as there being no reason to give somebody who isn't trained one, since it's either dangerous or no more effective than what they can already use.

That said, I do tend to prefer a bit more flexibility, so I think it'd have been nicer if they'd just made it usually a bad idea. I don't know what kind of systems they were trying to design for, though, so I guess it's possible that sort of thing was just more trouble than it was worth.

To be fair, I if I recall correctly, using shotguns in Marine squads is usually a specialized role. Room-sweeper, I think it's called. So it's not standard issue or anything, and I imagine being able to use one effectively for its intended purpose is more difficult than simply knowing how to pull the trigger.

So it's not really that surprising that it's an Assault weapon. Of course, I'd also prefer that you could give anyone any weapon and just have them not use it as well. But I'm not going to quibble about this too much, since it's not far off of standard military doctrine.

I can't remember, has the inventory been abstracted out?  It's not possible for a soldier to drop their shotgun and let someone else pick it up, or to pick up a shotgun from a killed teammate?

I thought the whole room-sweeper thing is due to the shotgun being used to "blow the bloody doors off" (to use my favorite Snatch quote) and the reason they were only issued in limited supplies is because you don't need every dude in the squad to ahve one to do that?

Though the specifics of how real-world militaries operate shouldn't really have anything to do with a sci-fi alien defense simulation IMHO. You should be able to send your entire squad out with nothing but knives and well-wishes if you want. Or give everyone an RPG and one rocket each. That's half the fun of X-Com style games.

No, Room-Sweeper is the job of the person who goes into a building first with a shotgun to take out any potential hostiles before the rest of the team goes in. My ex was a marine and I spent a while talking with a buddy of hers who had done several tours of duty in Iraq. His job was Room Sweeper, so I figure he knew what he was talking about.

Which is not to say I'm remembering it all correctly, as that conversation was a good 6 years ago or so.

Not that I disagree with you on the limitations. Seems silly that we're not allowed to arm people however we want, even if specific classes should be better at stuff.
