Dwarf Fortress - Mabinogi Chapter. Join it! It makes getting together a lot easier.DISABLE THE NAGLE ALGORITHM. It's completely harmless and many have done it with no ill effects. Instructions are here.If you're starting a new character and don't intend to spend real money on mabinogi, avoid using anything that mentions "premium service" in the description, usually bags and such, and be aware that your bank space will shrink by half eventually. Try to keep all your stuff in the bank on the left side of the bank section, or you may lose access to it!
ALSO! Make your char age 17 unless you intend to pay for rebirths. I could explain it more in depth but it makes things easier down the road. Long story short after you reach above 100 cumulative level you can only rebirth at age 20, and that makes it take less time. It won't kill your character, again, but you'll have to wait a while at a rediculous level before you can rebirth when it runs out. You can also rebirth to an older age I think? Not sure. So if you made a char at age 10, try rebirthing to 17. Dunno if it'll work, but.
Mabinogi is a free korean MMO, that manages to stand out amongst an admittantly lacklustre genre.
It suffers a little from the freemium syndrome but you can certainly play the entire game without spending money.
What sets it apart then, you may be asking your computer screen for some reason?(NOTE: If you just want the link and don't want to hear me rant about game details and junk then just skip to the end of the post.)
1. The combat system
Now the combat isn't amazing compared to say vindictus and dungeon fighter online, and it is far from being an "action MMO", but it was made long before those games to be fair and is still wonderful for the genre. If you just rush in and try to combo things to death, you will get MAULED by every enemy ever. Very skill based, for instance, use the defense skill to get attacked and take minimum damage (usually 1 point), so you can counter with a combo, use counterattack to avoid damage entirely and return it to them, use windmill for a huge melee AOE, etcetcetc. I'm only going over melee skills because that's how I play the game. Magic and ranged have entirely different strategies, although you're generaly going to melee enemies at least a little no matter your path, usually through skills (counterattack, windmill, getting enemies off of you after a defense with a melee combo)
You can make an entire charecter out of the crafting, hauling materials to people, making stuff out of the materials, selling the stuff, etc.
A single good crafter can haul in quite a bit of income and get a large advantage as a result. It can be a bit tedious, but little
minigames for some of the crafting breaks it up a bit. Also important is that leveling up your crafting skills does give you
stats that can be useful for combat, which leads into the next point...
3. The skill advancement system
You will have to earn your skill level ups. For instance to go from rank F to rank E you have to...
Use the skill successfully. 100 times.
Critical Hit with Smash. 50 times.
Finishing blow with Smash. 50 times.
You only ACTUALLY have to do about half of that, but if you fufill all of the objectives entirely you get an EXP bonus
to go with your skill rank. And frankly that isn't as much as you'd think, it'll fly by. For that particular rank, you don't
get any stat boost to go with your new skill rank, but let's jump forward aaaalllll the way to rank 8 of smash. You get +1 strength
and +1 will for leveling that. Skill ranks are where the majority of your permanant stats are going to come from. You use
AP to level these skills, you get trace amounts from levels, and most of it from.....
4. The Aging system
Every week you get a year older, get a big load of stats and AP from it, once you hit about 25 years old, you start gaining less stats
but you never stop gaining at least some of them from a birthday. You can also rebirth yourself but there's no point to it unless you are older then 17, as the free rebirth limits you to rebirthing to the age 17. If you pay you can rebirth to as young as ten years old and change your appearence.
5. THIS GAME HAS A PLOT
And not a terrible one either. Kind've anime, but we'll get to that later. There's a "main plotline" quest chain and you gain various special abilities for running through. They also have things called "RP quests" which are basically flashbacks that you play through as entirely different characters. Partying is nessacery for these quests. Bosses in the plot quest chain tend to have fairly large and complex bosses. If nothing else they're fun to look at.
Now that you've read or skimmed that, let's get to the bad.
1. This game is pretty anime
If you don't mind anime things then you'll probably be fine, it's not terribly rediculous. If you have a low tolerance for this sort've thing
you might buzz around youtube and find some screenshots and whatnot before you jump in to make sure the actual game is worth it for you.
2. This game is not up to date for newer windows OSes
Windows vista and 7 do NOT play nice with this game. At all. You can still PLAY them in the OS, but do note this and be prepared to
work out a few tech problems if they crop up. I personally haven't had much of an issue on 7, but some people say they litterally
can't play the game at all without turning off User Account Control. Your milage may vary.
3. This game can seem kind've unfair at times if you insist on soloing
Later dungeons will have ranged enemies, which attack you simultainiously while a melee enemy attacks you. The combat is balenced around 1 on 1. As a result this tends to result in a lot of cheap deaths from such setups until you finally work out a system that works for you. Generally if you want to play through the plot you're REALLY going to want a team, as some quests in it require multiple people.
So with all that said, here's
the download link. Use the direct download link that's hidden below the giant button
, as the giant button uses pando media booster to download the game (I think). I wouldn't call it malware, but it does basically seed a torrent for the client without your permission, which is a huge deal if you are on limited bandwith. WE ARE PLAYING ON ALEXINA!
