Classic pc games on modern phones
« on: January 13, 2012, 02:54:56 pm »

I've recently gotten hold of a Android phone with quite decent spec. I've been browsing for some apps to download when I noticed some really awesome old pc games have received ports.

Most of these ports have big flaws and are much better to play on the keyboard but are still worth trying out.

Of the interesting and free stuff I found on android market:

OpenTTD - abysmal to play on a 4 inch touchscreen

Duke Nukem 3D - i was overjoyed when I saw someone made such a port but unfortunately the controls are bad. You can'y aim and shoot at the same time.

Ur-Quan Masters - proabably the best port I've noticed so far.

HoMM 2 and 3 - could also potentially be good. The version of 3 that I noticed allows only for hotseat play and no campaign or skirmishes.

I'll post more if I can find.

I was hoping someone made an XCOM port for Android as it could probably work quite well.

Post if you know of other classics ported to modern mobile devices. Also discuss what game you think would do well if ported.

Also just saying that this isn't piracy. Most of these games are either open source or require some core files from a pc install to work.

Wow I've just found a port for Infinity Engine games https://market.android.com/details?id=net.sourceforge.gemrb#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDIxMiwibmV0LnNvdXJjZWZvcmdlLmdlbXJiIl0.. I would love to replay Planscape Torment on my mobile :D If only the text can be zoomed in to be readable I'm gold.

Whoa. Awesome, thanks for the heads up. I've found a Majesty port (a paid app, but it's all new content and periodically updated with additional free scenarios) if that's your kind of thing. Also, The SimCity port is surprisingly close to SimCity 4. Not exactly a classic, but a highly-played game, regardless.

Edit: TYRIAN!

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Nethack is totally free, its a bit tricky to move about accurately as you have to use the roller ball, but the on screen keyboard works fine for all the other controls.

Nethack was the first game app I got for my new phone :p . Too bad there is no sililar port of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup as I prefer that over Nethack. Nettiles might work with some browsers but not the default one. Telnet is always an option with ASCII games, even DF.

GTA 3 has been ported by Rockstar. Not free but not very expensive ($5 or something). Runs so smooth on my galaxy2, but the really good part is that they've put a lot of work into adapting the controls to small touchscreens, which is usually the weak point of these ports.

Downside: 500mb download.

The iPhone also has RogueTerm, an app for playing roguelikes over the net
Connecting to crawl.akrasiac.org with it works well enough that Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup can be considered mobile :)

This is not Android.   >:(

But this is: ScummVM Android.

OP said "Post if you know of other classics ported to modern mobile devices.", so I think the iPhone fits under that category!

I'm sorry, the title confused me.

Android versions of games are often different enough from iOS versions that there should be separate threads.

Android addition: FreeCiv
Two versions by two people:

Sorry for the misleading thread title. This thread is about classic game ports for mobile.

FreeCiv would be great to play on a phone. I try it out when it's finished and released on android market.

Among other interesting things I noticed there are android ports of Angband(ASCII only).

Right now I can definately recommend Ur-Quan Masters. It's a perfect game to play on the go.

There's a dosbox app for android platforms, multiple actually. I remember I managed to get xcom to work, but the controls are terrible honestly.

Android: Angband, Angband variants, and "Roguelike Classics" (Rogue Clone, Larn, UMoria)

I still think there should be two topics as the selection is very different between OS's and very few authors program for Android and iOS with full features between versions. This thread could become very unwieldy. At least use "android:" or "ios:" before the game.

(Searching through Android Market)

Man, there sure are a lot of minesweeper clones...huh... Is that? I think it is!

The 1992 X-Men Arcade Game! With WiFi Multiplayer! :D

There seem to be quite a few quick ports for <3$, but free ones look few and far between. Hell, I saw a 4$ port of Battle for Wesnoth...a Freeware game :\

There's also the snes9x emulator, although that requires roms. Controls aren't snappy enough for platformers and action games but fine for jrpg's like Chrono Trigger and FF6.
