Pain tolerance; Males vs females
« on: January 13, 2012, 03:23:23 pm »

In real world humans, females for the most part have higher pain thresholds than males. Most believe this is to protect them from going insane during childbirth, but that's irrelevant to this post.
What IS relevant is that i've been noticing my female soldiers tend to shrug off serious wounds and stay in combat FAR more frequently than the males do. Not only that, but they seem to be released from the hospital FAR sooner as well. I've had males retreat after being stabbed in the hand, while females continue to fight whilst spurting blood from a freshly cleaved limb.

is there something in the RAWs that accounts for the real world pain tolerance of women or is this just a LONG co-incidence?

Check their willpower, endurance and recuperation e.t.c.

I've had a brief moment of !!SCIENCE!! once, where I trained my doctors on injured migrants, and males tended to survive more (but not significantly). So it's safe to attribute it to coincidence :p

Unless you're talking about something like an antman queen...

And another study has shown that childbirth is only a fraction as painful as getting kicked in the ☼gold nuggets☼

Generally experiencing pain frequently raises your pain threshold. So whichever experiences more pain, is bothered less by it. Which is how you get loads of argument why x can handle more pain than y. Sometimes, you need to distance yourself, and ask, why the hell does it matter? :p

One wonders how they went about testing that.

(Seriously, though, if there is a study like that, I am suspicious of those results.)

That's kinda like what I say when I'm told females are stronger for their ability to endure childbirth:

"Well a good kick to the jewels can cause you to vomit, I've never seen a girl vomit during childbirth, must not be that painful."

Honestly, I think it depends largely on the individual in question, rather than just what sex they are. It's just a fun way to annoy them.

On topic:

I don't know if DF actually makes certain attributes more prominent depending on sex of the creature. I'd certainly be impressed if the genetics went into that much detail, though.

Paid volunteers and neural scanning, I'd assume.

Yes, men have both a higher pain threshold and feel less pain, excluding childbirth and groin shots.  But women would have felt so much pain back then that they would have developed tolerance.

I mean, they live in dwarf fortresses.

No, they use scanning.  Look at my above post.
