Hugo vs. Cthulu'orobis:
Hugo was a blind seer. He could sense the auras of all the things around him, something not unlike true sight but different. He could see mere seconds into the future, but could also see that which occurred in lands afar. He served in the king’s court as a royal newsgiver. Many years had gone by since the Event had transpired, but his memory had not faded.
The Hearing Day, as Hugo called it, was the day when Hugo first Heard It. He woke up to an odd noise, somewhat like that of metal against metal. As the day progressed, the sound morphed into something like the dying breath of a horse. Hugo also began to get a headache that worsened as the day progressed and the sound became louder. As the sound progressed in volume, the scope of his Farvision narrowed. Eventually, his sight became limited to only that within a mile, and that was when he saw it. A huge evil aura, unlike anything he had seen before. The aura began to expand and contract along with Hugo’s own heartbeat, discoloring each time it expanded or contracted. The aura suddenly shrank to the size of a pinhead with unholy speed, then Hugo fell to his knees, gasping for air. It felt like the air was being stolen from his lungs. In a bout of fear, he accidently struck the king’s attendant, who yelped in terror and alerted the king. The king ordered his physician to attend to Hugo. As suddenly as Hugo had fallen, he recovered.
The next day was, as he called it, the Event. That afternoon, Hugo had gone to the cellar to fetch a small trinket, and as he descended the stairs, the door slammed shut. His heart skipped a beat. He saw a large, evil aura, previously hidden by its Obscuring Spell. The monstrosity spoke to him in a tongue that sounded like no language Hugo had heard of, but he could still understand. “You are the last one who can see me, Hugo, so you must die,” it said. Hugo then felt a power grow within him, the power of all seers who had been, until this thin-. “I HAVE A NAME! “it roared,” I am Cthulu’orobis, last of the Eldritch Lords.” Hugo unleashed a burst of psionic energy on the beast, but he just laughed it off like it was nothing. The beast muttered some unintelligible words, and then Hugo was propelled against the wall. Hugo decided that to combat this being, he would have to become ethereal. Hugo focused his power and with much effort willed his spirit out of his body. As soon as he entered the ethereal plane, the beast started to become nervous. Hugo could now do magic a hundred times more powerful than ever before.
As Hugo became aware that his power was so strong, he began pelting the last Eldritch Lord with soul-shattering psionic blasts. Each of these did only minor damage to the carapace surrounding it, and it finally shouted “Ha! This is all the power of the world’s psions, and it still cannot even pierce my shell. How pathetic!” Hugo’s aura vision finally detected an imperfection in the shield, a small divot, about the size of a dime, a weak point in an otherwise impenetrable shell. Hugo directed a barrage of psychic missiles at the indention, and the armor shattered into a million little pieces. He could now see his enemy, a beast of evil flesh and foul teeth. It was now or never. The beast let out a bellow, but was choked partway through by Hugo’s spell. This arcane monstrosity was now but history, all the souls it devoured now free to roam.
Hugo now understood why he had been able to defeat Cthulu’orobis. It was not because he was stronger or better than any other psion, but because all their power had come to rest on him. If it was not for their noble deaths, he would be dead. Hugo was at last able to sleep, knowing that his colleagues were still alive in him.
