Great Thrower? Yeah, right!
« on: August 13, 2007, 05:25:00 pm »

I've got this bug twice now on as many adventurers. I didn't train them immediatly up to legendary in throwing, and thus it is getting better and better slowly as I throw things around.

Usually, even at dabbling, I manage to throw stones, hit and seriously maim the target(s). Once I reach the "Great thrower" status, the adventurer can't seem to be able to hit an elephant in a corridor. Sometimes, the object thrown even go in the opposite direction or away at a 90 degree arc than where it is supposed to go, and it is just as if my adventurer didn't know how to throw at all.

My guess would be that there is a bug somewhere which switched the Great Thrower and the Dabbling levels together...

Yeah, it is weird how Legendary Throwers can't seem to hit anything more than a few spaces away at all..

Interesting. On a perhaps related note, I've been noticing that my expert/professional-ish level siege operators can frequently fire ballistas accurate to within a tile of a target standing several dozen tiles away, but my legendary siege operators almost always seem to end up firing the ballista arrow in the wrong direction (if the shot needs to lean upwards, they fire it at a downward angle; if it needs to veer left, they fire it veering right). I don't know if there's any crossover between thrown projectiles and siege fire, but maybe there's a rollover bug somewhere in the aiming where too-skilled dwarves goof up?

Me too! my highest-level heroes can't hit the broad side of a mountain! when there is a big pile of wolves over to the side, I can throw rocks at them, and they slide off at an odd angle and hit a totally different animal. That animal gets hit, but rarely has the kind of
*the spinning slate rock hits the wolf in the head*
*It explodes into gore!*
thing. It denetly seems like a minus sign is missing somewhere.

Just out of curiosity would you say the angle, although currently opposite, would be more accurate than the equivalent professional level angles if it wasn't opposite? (does that make sense?)

Just thought I'd say that I've noticed this as well, throwing copper bolts they often fly off either behind me or sideways rather than towards my enemy.

It happened to me after my adventurer lost an eye.

Check that out, even wild tigers can take one of those with them...

I'll put it on the list.  Yeah, probably just a type conflict or something simple.

This is what I was going to suggest. Losing an eye damages a character's accuracy to a very high degree, so much that my legendary marksdwarf couldn't hit the broad side of a barn after losing one.

If this is the case, then yeah, there may be an interesting problem.

Problem with that theory is that my legendary throwers frequently fail at throwing things at faraway targets even with both eyes.
