Early 250, The Dwarven Mountainhome

A stout, gruff-looking Dwarf steps up to a balcony. Bellow him, thousands of Dwarves congregate. This is Domas Nilegen, the Dwarvenking's head warrior.

Friends, Dwarves, Short Men... Lend me your ears!
For too long has our glorious race hid away under stone and rock whilst Evil roamed the land above.
No more, I say! No more!
The time has come for us to leave the safety of the Mountainhome and take the fight to our enemies!
We must venture onto the surface, and build a great, impregnable fortress, from whence my warriors will rule the land!

The rest of his speech is obscured by booing, for no Dwarf wishes to live on the surface. It is here that some of the Dwarvenking's men escort Domas Nilegen out of the Moutainhome and into exile.

1st of Granite, 251: Domas Nilegen

One year ago, I was exiled from my home for daring to speak the truth. Our kind has grown fat and lazy underground; prime picking for Ogres and Goblins. Our defenses were mighty, that is true; but fort after fort has fallen, until only the Mountainhome itself was safe. And it was growing crowded. Our only hope is to clear the land from these invaders. But our Dwarvenking is too cowardly to take action. And so, here I am, at the top of this mountain. Here me and six of my loyal men will build a fort the likes of which has never been seen; a fort which will protect the land, so that we no longer need to hide.

I have thought long and hard over the year we have traveled of what name I shall give my fortress. I have finally made my decision: Lashevil, for we will be like the stroke of the lash that wipes Evil off the face of the world!

We do not have much. There are only seven of us; Three of my men are miners, accustomed to working underground, while three are woodsmen, able to survive in the hostile open world. With us, we have few supplies; a pair of cows, a pair of dogs, and nine turkeys. We will settle underground while building our above-ground keep, from where we will fight evil!

The land is rich here; already, on the way up, I've seen iron, copper, silver, and lead ores. Out of the corner of my eye, I think I saw platinum ore; but that remains to be seen. In any case, we should have no trouble building our weapon industry. Our warriors will be feared by all Evildoers throughout the land! Huzzah!

****************************************************

Hello and welcome to Lashevil, my second ever community fortress! The first one, Knifemurders, was the fun tale of a group of dwarves and their quest for revenge against the evil badgers. Unfortunately, I was unable to update that story for a long time while transitioning to college, and lost my save when I got a new computer. And so, I will now tell a new tale!

I will be using the latest version of Dig Deeper, with NoExotic installed. This time, rather than simple survival, I have an actual goal (Which I feel is fair, since I finally found a site with both deep and shallow metals as well as flux): Build a fort that will be the scourge of Evil!

To achieve this goal, I have a set of tasks:
1) Build five defensible keeps, one on the surface and one on each cavern level, as well as in Hell itself. Somewhere underground will be the place that sustains these keeps. Each keep must have at least one squadron of soldiers guarding it full-time in order to complete the challenge.
2) Eliminate all threats! Passively sitting inside a keep, hiding behind traps is good and well if your goal is survival; but Lashevil is home to the Stalwart Defenders, who will not put up with Evil prancing around outside their walls! All Evil must be eliminated, destroyed, terminated, tamed, enslaved, or otherwise incapacitated as soon as possible. Example of Evil include, but are not limited too, Goblins, Orcs, Ogres, Undead, Megabeasts, Dragons, Bunnies, Predators, Bandits, Cutthroats, Tax Evaders, Pirates, Necromancers, Vampires, Werewolves, Badgers, and Lawyers. Elves are not considered Evil, but are on VERY thin ice.
3) Prove to the Mountainhome that living on the surface is NOT suicide! Become so successful that the Dwarvenking himself moves in.

I forgot to mention... If you want to be Dwarfed, just ask!

1st of Hematite, 251: Building Up is Hard to Do

Today marks the three-moon anniversary of Lashevil. A full season has passed since we've settled here, in this land; and while we haven't lived in luxury, none of us have complain. After all, even bad conditions are better than exile.

Which isn't to say we haven't had our troubles. On the first day, I sent my woodsdwarves out to chop some lumber from the forest at the foot of Mount Lashevil. While they managed to harvest quite a bit of wood, they ran into trouble: Giant spider webs, which one of them was trapped in for almost half an hour before he managed to cut himself free.

Evil, it seems, has already claimed this land; the webs were identified as Phantom Spider webs. Eventually, we will eliminate this threat; unfortunately, we do not currently have the resources to do so. I ordered the dwarves to be more careful in the forest, for now.

The next day, while I was tracking a mountain goat, I stumbled upon a truly horrifying sight. Twelve humanoids, each as tall as a human and twice as wide, walked past. They had the head and the fur of a badger, but walked upright, like men!

While my purpose in establishing this fort was to ensure that us Dwarves would no longer need to cower underground, I realized my death at this early stage would serve no purpose. I sneaked away, and ordered the dwarves to avoid these badgermen at all cost.

The woodsdwarves reported multiple incidents with the badgermen during the spring, including one attack; but they were able to avoid injuries. In any case, I decided that the time has come to begin work on the fort proper, to ensure our safety from attack. While the miners continued expanding the underground living space, I began planning the rudimentary walls that, with a little luck, will eventually make the foundation of the whole keep.

Underground, the true work has begun. Two large chambers were carved out, one to contain and process lumber, and one to do the same for stones. To the East, I ordered the men to dig out temporary bedrooms. These will, in the future, serve as the craftsdwarves' quarters. Once the farming quarter is expanded, dwarves responsible for food production will move down there, and soldiers will eventually sleep in the keep.

This is where I put the roost for the turkeys as well. In hindsight, it would have been more efficient to put them in the food production area, but I did not realize how far we would have to go before finding plantable soil.

While the mountain is rich in minerals, its also rocky and barren. For this reason, we had to dig quite far to find usable soil for planting crops. On the bright side, we found multiple iron and gold deposits on the way. In the coming months, once I ensure the food industry is up to par, I will begin construction of a metalworking industry. Soon, the seven of us shall all be armed with steel swords and clad in the finest armor! The Stalwart Defenders shall rise to protect the world!

Please make requests to be Dwarved, guys! I want to start writing conversations!

1st of Limestone, 251: The Forge of Destiny

Half a year we have lived here on this mountain; and now the time has come to strike Evil from the world. We are ready!

Early in the Summer, one of the Dwarves under my command came running to me, panting. "Dwarves, Sir! Six of them! They're climbing up the mountain!" I cursed myself for not already producing any armor and weapons, grabbed my crossbow, and set off to meet them.

I saw them, walking through the forest towards our humble fort: six Dwarves, carrying various goods marking their professions and leading along a few animals.

"Halt! Who goes there?" I called as they approached. "Domas Nilegen? Is that you?" shouted one, who I took to be their leader. When I affirmed his suspicions, he said "We have heard your speech, back in the Mountainhomes, before you were exiled, and we took what you said to heart. We have come to join you!"

And so it was that our ranks nearly doubled. While this meant more work to feed and house everyone, we were all cheerful; we drank well into that night.

That was when the trouble began. I ordered the men to leave the first batch of turkey eggs alone for now, so that we may have more birds in the future. I did not count on the sheer number of turkeys that would hatch.

The tiny roost is now crowded with dozens of turkeys. At last count, there were sixty of the little bastards. I ordered all the poults butchered. They won't provide much meat, but at least we'll be rid of them.

With all of our new migrants, I have ordered the construction of a large addition to our bedroom chambers.

The keen observer will notice that we have more rooms than beds to put them in, but I have ordered the construction of more beds, along with cabinets. Soon, we shall give every Dwarf his own bedroom.

I have left the best and most important news to last. Deep in the mountain, we have built a forge. Already, the halls of Lashevil thunder and echo with the sounds of hammers on metal.

We have produced iron, steel, copper, and gold bars in large quantities, along with substantial amounts of silver and lead. I have been too busy to keep an accurate count, but I plan to take some time off from hunting once the new migrants are settled in. I have ordered an office constructed for me, where I will do my work once the busy day permits it.

Nice job so far, I like the aggressive stance of this fort.

Dorf sheet:

Name: Nix
Gender: Preferably male, ok if female
Job: First militia member
Weapon: Axe

Please give him/her a good weapon, some armor if you can spare, and LOTS of training.  Seriously, training is what I believe to be the most important part of the military.

Please and thank you.

Hell to the yes, my first Dwarfing request!

Alright, Nix will be coming right up. Probably as a woodcutter-turned-axe-murderer. And don't worry, your axe won't be Adamantine, but it will be the next best thing ;)

23rd of Sandstone, 251: The Adventures of Nix ~By Nix

It's hard to believe that it's already Moonstone. A few weeks ago, I was still in the Mountainhomes, training to fight but doing nothing. And now, here I am, actually taking the fight to the enemy!

It all started back in 250, when I heard that guy, Domas, give his speech. I realized that he was right; we were wasting underground while Evil took over the surface. But then he disappeared, and I never heard from him again.

Then, a few months after that, I was talking to my friends about him. And one of them informed me that Domas was, in fact, exiled! I was greatly disheartened to hear of our dear Dwarvenking acting in such a cowardly way. Then, a few weeks after THAT, I met a Dwarf who claimed to have come from a keep called Lashevil, where Domas went after his exile to fight Evil. I imminently found a group of loyal friends and together, we set off for Lashevil.

[/URL]

We made it here without trouble. Tomorrow, we'll be approaching the keep; I hope Dormas will accept my axearm into his ranks.

24th of Sandstone, 251: More Migrants! ~By Doram Nilegan

More migrants showed up today! It seems that while the Dwarvenking feared my message, many of the common Dwarves have taken it to heart.

Now that we have more working hands, I plan to stop doing so much of the physical work myself. Instead, the time has come to take stock of Lashevil's stores. Our metal industry is coming along nicely; soon I shall split my time between fighting and managing the fort.

Most of the new migrants are going to be joining the various industries, but their leader, Nix, has greatly impressed me. He's a good fighter, and quite eager for battle. I have ordered the production of armor and a battleaxe for him. He will be our first soldier.

I have not told him this yet, for I wish it to be a surprise, but we have discovered a source of Mithril in the mountain. I ordered his battleaxe to be made of this near-mythical metal.

1st of Moonstone, 251: Badgerslayer

Finally, I have brought Dwarven steel (Or Mithril, in this case) to the enemy!

Ah, I'm too excited. Let me start from the beginning. The founder of this fort, Doram, was most eager to accept my offer as an axedwarf. I worked alongside the others until I was needed, training when I had the time. Meanwhile, Lashevil's finest smiths worked on a set of armor and an axe to send me into battle with.

For more than a month, I've worked without seeing battle. Then, one day, Doram himself came into my bedroom. A second dwarf, one of the smiths, stood behind him, holding something. "Nix!" said Doram. "The Badgermen are back. This time, they've come too close to our fort to ignore. Besides, it is high time we took the fight to our enemy. Will you slay them?" "Aye, sir." I said without hesitation. He nodded. "Than take these, Nix, and make haste!"

He steppe out of the room, and the other dwarf entered. He handed me a set of iron fullplate, which I donned with utmost haste. Then he handed me a battleaxe. "This, my friend, is the greatest axe I have ever forged. I was honored to work with such fine metal, and now it is yours." At first, I was confused; what metal could be so great to humble a Dwarf? But then I realized what I was holding: A Mithril battleaxe! I hefted the fine weapon in the air, and cried "These goblin-sucking sons of turkeys won't know what hit them!"

After a short walk, I saw them. A dozen foul humanoids, their heads shaped like badgers, walked along in what is best described, by the ancient scribe Bojangles, as a "Conga Line". With a fierce war cry, I descended on the foul monsters.

With a quick strike, I cut off the arm of the first badger. The others fled from me, screaming horribly; Only one badgerman stayed behind to help its comrade. But even two badgermen were no match for me, and I brought them down, slicing the first one in half and punching the first one so hard that its skull fractured its brain.

The rest of the badgermen fled before I could fight them. Doram is confident they'll think twice before returning. Truly, this strategy of bringing the fight to Evil is very effective!

1st of Granite, 252: The Hunt~By Nix

Just the other day, the smiths finally finished their second suit of armor and accompanying axe. Not half an hour later, one of the woodsdwarves rushed into the fort, babbling about giant furry men.

Domas got this determined look on his face, picked up his axe, and said, "So Badgerbane, want to go on a hunt?" (Domas and his men have been calling me Badgerbane ever since I chased away that conga line of badgermen). Of course, I eagerly accepted. Domas whistled to his two dogs, a huge pair of hunting beasts that he keeps with him at all times, and we set off into the forest.

It was hard to keep up with the hounds, especially since we were wearing heavy armor. But Domas ran through the forest without complaint, so I followed suit.

It was obvious that the dogs picked up some sort of scent; they were baying and prancing around, and leading us in a clear direction. Finally, after almost an hour, we saw it; a huge man, twice as tall and four times as wide as any human, covered in shaggy, knotted white fur. "Yeti!" snarled Domas as he drew his axe.

The hounds obviously wanted to go after it, but Domas didn't want them to get hurt, so he whistled at them to go home. To my surprise, the beasts growled and left. Domas inspires command not only in us Dwarves, but also in his animals.

"Ready?" he whispered to me as we crouched in the foliage above the yeti. "Aye!" I said. "CHARGE!" he cried as he hefted his battleaxe and ran down the hill, raising his shield. I quickly followed, but couldn't keep up with him. The yeti, clearly alarmed, took off up the next hill. I tried to keep up, but Domas was faster; soon, they were both out of sight. I ran after them, climbing the hill. Finally, I made it too the top. They hadn't been out of my sight for more than ten seconds, but the fight was already over. Domas was standing over the mutilated corpse of the yeti, bloody axe in his hand. One of the yeti's huge arms lay on the ground ten feet away. His other arm and one of his legs weren't quite as far, but they weren't attached either; both of them lay limply besides the dead body.

************************************************

Not much happened over Winter. I dealt with the poultry problem (The next caravan will have a ton of Turkey Poult Totems when it leaves), I made another suit of armor and a bunch of picks, and I designated some more mineral clumps for mining. I've been having wood shortages, but its more of a "high demand" problem than a "low supply" problem. I'll send some more woodcutters out next season.

I can't believe it. I CANNOT BELIEVE IT.

Last time I did a Community Fort, I accidentally embarked as a civ that was totally extinct. This time? That's right. I DID IT AGAIN.

I'm going to do exactly what I did last time: reclaim the fort using dwarves named after the originals, and make a story that makes sense regarding what happened. So I'll be back down to 7 dwarves, but everything else will stay the same.
