Find Site Administration and begin the interview

Straight and to the point.

---

Overhearing the nearby exchange, you make it to Site Administration first - ahead of a groggy flock of new hires - and enter.

Directly ahead of you is a bald, middle-aged man sitting at a desk. He looks up from his sandwhich and squints in your direction. The room appears to be your standard musty office capable of hosting around 6 desks and associated personnel.

"Ah, Miss... Clara Ellison. Right on schedule, Welcome to Lithos Mining." A sigh and a bit of clickety-clack later, the unnamed manager looks up from his computer terminal and offers a few basic ideas.

"I see you're registered as a... Lab Assistant. No work history attached, though. Perhaps you might be of use in Hydroponics or Medical; unless you have something specific in mind? This is a mining operation, afterall, with a certain flexibility. We maintain basic industry, logistics, and personnel needs per the charter. Nothing too fancy. Beyond our facility you'll find other settlements, with their own goals and needs, but let's focus on your employment opportunities here at Lithos first, eh?"

He flashes you a sorry excuse for a smile, weighed down by dark eyebags customary of life as a minor bureaucrat, of an industrial Corp, on some gods-forsaken colony world no one else knows exists.

“Hello sir, I’m fine working in either section, given this is a mining company, I’d imagine accidents happen more frequently than plant based issues, so I’ll help with medical, speaking of which, is everyone alright? Perhaps we could find and grow medicinal plants in the hydroponics if we get the relevant seeds. Is there anything specific needed right now? How’s blood storage? Need any chemicals synthesized? Ooh, maybe I can try to grow bacteria that eat the ores around the things we want to mine. What do you tend to mine for? Would I’d be ok if I run a small experiment of my own? Obviously at a later time of course. I shall be of use wherever I’m needed sir. What should I call you, boss, leader, lord, president, sir, taskmaster?”

Job tip:

You can suggest a specific job type or 2-3 options, and we'll see where you fit in. Maybe you won't find a gunsmithing job at Lithos Mining Corp, but that gives me an excuse to create an organization or faction where that job exists, or finagle something. Like if you're a Virologist, we're kinda shit out of luck right now. Maybe you can venture to the Capitol and find something there. You don't HAVE to work at Lithos, or for very long. Its just an origin point for tutorial purposes so I can get y'all situated.

If anyone asks in game, you can find out more about why you're waking up from cryo there in the first place. What world you're on. Where's the nearest city. Who runs things around here. Etc.

Also, you can either dialogue it out, or simply post "Look for work as a bounty hunter / archaeologist / barkeep / smuggler / etc" and 'create' more options that way.

ACTION: Find the nearest bar; look for things to steal; find a weapon; find a shop; etc

The world will grow as opportunities arise for us to flesh out the evolving lore, based on y'alls actions and inquiries. I'll occasionally drop in with NPCs as well.

LORE DUMP TIME BABAY

DM: LORE: DICEROLL: 6: WILD SUCCESS (results modified by Admin Bob's personality traits.)

"Ah, pardon! I'm Administrator* (edit: typo) DaSilva, but folks 'round here just call me Bob."

Checking his terminal once again, Admin Bob nods a few times, bobbing his head in accordance with his namesake.

"Looks like the Science Division would suit you then. They handle medical, hydro, chemical, and everything in between. You'll be answering to Santos, Head of SciDev, in the next building over."

Admin Bob points out the window to a nondescript concrete building surrounded by a barbed wire fence; across what seems to be a massive parking lot littered with miscellaneous industrial equipment in various states of (dis)repair; beside quadbikes, dirtbikes, pickup trucks, dump trucks, flat beds, box trucks, mini buses, and a few things you don't recognize at a glance.

"Should be a big sign that says 'Science Division', though we just call it 'The Lab." All the funky stuff happens there. Can't really tell you what sort of seeds or stock they've got, as I'm in charge of Personnel here at Lithos. Corporate is big on industrial-grade mineral extraction: stuff like Iron, Copper, Gold, and those rare earth element types used in advanced tech. Got a few dig sites scattered around, including one this facility is attached to. Per The Charter, we're meant to squirrel away a certain percentage of extracted goods for eventual offworlding at a profit, but mostly just trade to various on-world industries in exchange for parts, labor, food, tech... They've been saying we'd regain contact with The Network since my great-great-grandparents' generation at least, so there's no use stockpiling much until there's an actual offworld to sell to. Now, for experiments... If we've got the equipment for it, or you don't mind heading out to try and acquire what's needed, I'm sure the SciDev Head won't mind. Ain't much else to do 'round here in the Industrial Sector if you're not fixing old equipment, mining, or transporting material. Gotta stay busy somehow, and there are plenty of Corporate subsidies meant to fund ways to either save or make credits. Hell, half the time we don't even know they exist until someone puts in a request. You just get an email from the local branch of the Network, automated of course, and it tells you where to find a locked building no one alive's ever been in. There's more equipment, data, and material stockpiled in secret bunkers and locked buildings than anyone really cares to admit. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the Altarax government's sitting on a fleet of ships and fancy tech they don't tell us about. Speaking of..."

DM: LORE/DIALOGUE: DICEROLL: 5: SOLID SUCCESS (results modified by Admin Bob's personality.)

Admin Bob gently strokes his stubbled chin, then gently shrugs. "No use beating around the bush."

"Fact is, the original Charter was designed to found a Trade Hub with on-site mineral extraction, alloy foundries, a space port, xenobiological research, and all sorts of other goodies. Eventually a proper capitol world for the whole star system, too. The colony ship built a whole damn pre-fab city to run it all, but its mostly a ghost town outside of the Central Core. In reality, for reasons no one alive can remember, things went sideways during the Founding. We've been running minimal operations, with minimal equipment, and minimal manpower. Every so often a number of Sleepers - that's you - are authorized to wake up and we give 'em jobs, or get them somewhere else their skills are useful. No system-wide government here, just the Charter AI, who silently empower the folks up in Port Altarax, who call the shots and keep all the fancy tech. They've got a hospital, forges, bunch of labs, enough empty housing to double our population a few magnitudes over, all sorts of shops, bars, and whatnot. Hell, I heard they're unveiling a new Nuclear Power Plant soon, after we got lucky with that new dig site. A few thousand souls, at the best of times, in a city designed for millions... Might be a bit jarring to ya the first time, but you'll get used to it."

Admin Bob wipes a few crumbs off of his desk, opens a drawer, then hands you a thin metallic device that fits in the palm of your hand. Looking at it the first time, its surface lights up: featuring your full name, an old photo from your personnel file, and the words "SciDev" on some sort of digital display.

"Anyway, here's your Codex. Use that everywhere you go. Its your ID, work authorization, bank account, criminal record, GPS transponder, and whatever else the tech folk can get it to do. Biolocked, of course, but don't leave it on a counter unless you want to get robbed, hacked, or in trouble with local law enforcement. All I know is, its hooked into the local Network and just... works."

Admin Bob smiles, a bit more genuinely this time, says goodbye, and returns to eating his now somewhat-stale sandwhich.

Solid start! :) After waiting your turn in line for the Site Admin, SciDev Initiate Clara Ellison walks out and its your turn. Having overheard much of their conversation, your Briefing interview runs a bit faster. At the end of the standard spiel, Admin Bob hands you your bio-keyed Codex device (see prior Lore Dump); a Peacekeeper kit (telescopic stun baton, police-style short-ranged ranged taser, synth-cuffs, and a black synthcloth uniform with a patrol cap - featuring the insignia of Lithos Mining Corp. - Security Division); and informs you to seek out SecDev Admin Locke.

"Mr. Wellington, welcome to SecDev. I'm sure you'll do Lithos Mining proud. Your primary directives are to maintain the peace, secure Corp property, and defend the Company's interests at large. On a day to day basis that mainly entails handling drunken brawls, petty theft, and the like. Occasionally the local fauna and flora gets agitated and you'll need a tranquilizer rifle, or a flamethrower, but that's between you and SecDev Admin Locke. He'll assign you more specific patrol, enforcement, or investigative tasks as needed. Wait, see that blinking red symbol on your Codex? That's a SecDev Summons in action."

Admin Bob quickly leans over with a grunt and taps the red indicator: revealing a 2D map. He pinches two fingers together to zoom in, taps-holds to pan over, and points at a blue GPS indicator showing your position relative to the red indicator - aka the Incident Summons. It looks to be in the next building over.

"Hm. Looks like something's up over at SciDev HQ across the lot. Summons by SecDev Admin Locke himself, but no reason coded. I suggest you hurry over immediately, he's a stickler for detail so this may be an evolving situation..."

You've been given your first task. You can choose to go to SciDev HQ, or ignore the Summons entirely and do something else.

NOTE: You've not yet been assigned housing, given access to the armory, or assigned specific duties. You can ask Admin Bob follow-up questions now, come back later, or never. Up to you.

Also, let me know your activity levels (daily login, every 2-3 days, once a week?) and I'll react accordingly.

“Thank you so much, Bob. I’ll go to SciDev right away!” Clara exitedly stated, before sprinting to SciDev in her excitement

You leave Site Administration and pass a long line of groggy-eyed Sleepers awaiting assignment. Looks like that sandwhich will have to wait after all.

Arriving at what appears to be the front door of SciDev HQ, your Codex chimes gently. "Autodoors disabled - security protocol active. Please tap your Codex on the access scanner to initiate handshake protocol. To repeat this message, say repeat message."

You find a small, square machine embedded in the wall beside double doors and wave your Codex near it.

ROLL: TECH: 3

Both devices emit a synchronized DING and the double doors swing open inward. "ACCESS GRANTED. Welcome, Technician Ellison." You hear a synthetic voice through a hidden vox speaker.

Down a bland gray hallway littered with closed doors, the building opens up into an open galley that seems to function like a giant warehouse / workshop hybrid. Individual workstations - surrounded by tools and miscellaneous bits & bobs - are strewn about in islands of order amidst a sea of apparent chaos. There are piles of scrap, and random machines in part or whole, all over the place. A group of Technicians are gathered around a specific workstation where a short, stocky middle-aged guy in black is having a heated argument with them.

You witness the stocky man in black jab a gloved pointer finger into a male Tech's chest and exclaims, if a bit deadpan, "I don't give a shit WHAT you're working on, Malone. Clear out your workstation NOW or I'll drag you out by the damn labcoat."

A tall, slender woman in a work overalls and a labcoat raises her hands emphatically while retorting, "This is bullshit and you know it, Locke! Who filed the complaint? Termination on what grounds?"

SecDev Admin Mason Locke takes two steps back and engages a telescopic stun baton in one swift motion before stricking the man next to her in the knee. The man goes down unceremoniously.

"Orders are orders, and I fucking said so. You're lucky you're head of SciDev, Santos, or I'd have your ass for insubordination. Malone, get your ass up and clear out your station! NOW!"

The crumpled man on the floor, now covered in dust, rises shakily. "The hell, man! I didn't steal nothin'! Its like the boss said, bullshit!"

A dozen nearby Techs begin a combination of arguing, begging for leniency, cursing out SecDev Locke, pretending they see nothing while interacting with a random workstation, etc.

SciDev Santos, hands held aloft in a passive gesture, takes a step back from the ensuing chaos. "Look, Malone, just do what he says. Clear out your affects and have the day off. Tomorrow we can file an Appeal with HQ and figure out what's happening."

After dusting himself off, Malone takes a long hard look at Locke's impatient face, glances at the currently-inactive stun baton, then nods. "Fine. Whatever. Fuck this place, I'm out. No offense, boss."

SciDev Santos and SecDev Locke continue their agument while Malone appears to carefully shovel random bits & bobs into the bin. After doing so, Locke swipes it out of his hands and peers inside.

ROLL: 5: INVESTIGATION (modified by Locke)

ROLL: 1: REACTION: MALONE: CRIT FAIL

"See, this is exactly what I'm talking about, you fuckin' dunce." A miscellaneous machine part is pulled from the bin and chucked at Malone who attempts to catch it. Like an overzealous cat with the zoomies cartwheeling through the air, Malone accidentally slaps the part mid-flight and sends it careening across the workshop floor. It strikes the ground hard, emitting a puff of smoke before shattering into pieces. Some of which sizzle gently.

"All this shit belongs to the Company. YOU belong to the Company. Company says hand it over, you hand it over. Company says burn it all, you burn it all. Now get the hell out before I take your other knee and let you crawl home." With that, Locke shoves the bin into Malone's chest.

Avoiding further punishment, you watch Malone walk towards you. Your paths cross halfway down the hall between the front doors and the workshop floor.

“Hi Malone, I heard the conversation, what was the thing that broke and what were you working on before Locke fired you? Also, if you belong to the company as well as the items, why steal them? I remember hearing from Bob that if you want materials you can go out and scavenge for some, how about after my shift, whatever it may be, we can go out and look for two of whatever the broken thing was? One for SciD3vm and one for you? My name’s Clara Ellison, I’m what Bob called a Sleeper, did you wake up from cryo too?”
Clara turns to Santos, “Hi, I’m Clara Ellison, I can take over for Malone and…hmmm, what if I work with him and keep watch to make sure he stops stealing? What was he working on? After my shift, can I go scavenging with him so he gets what he’s after without stealing from here?”

Thank Bob for his time then go find a bathroom or something I can change into the security uniform in then head over to where the incident summons is.

Also, let me know your activity levels (daily login, every 2-3 days, once a week?) and I'll react accordingly.
I post here everyday except for the week ends.

Also do we need to keep track of out character sheet and inventory or will you do that?

Thank Bob for his time then go find a bathroom or something I can change into the security uniform in then head over to where the incident summons is.

---

Billy arrives in uniform soon after the hullabaloo has died down. He passes Clara & Malone and sees what appears to be a fellow Peacekeeper in a similar black uniform.

---

Malone blinks as he's barraged with questions, then beckons Clara to follow him as he hobbles toward the front door. "Whoa! Hold up, lady. Breathe. Alright look, I'm gonna give you a bit of advice: don't ask questions like that where-" Malone pauses to glare as Keeper Billy passes by the duo.

Leaning closer, He whispers, "Corporate Goons like the PeaceKeepers can hear."

Malone smirks upon hearing the word 'Sleeper.'

"Fresh off the ice... So you'll learn quick: you're a Corporate asset now - property of Colony Administration. If they tell you to 'misplace' a part... Or send you on some bullshit quest... You're expected to comply quietly."

"That cocky little bastard in black back there who was all up in my face? That's Lithos Corp's Chief of Security: Peacekeeper Locke. We call him Chief Keeper 'cause he takes whatever he wants, and not always on orders. Coincidentally, he's got connections in the Sentinel Corp, the Colonial Security Development Committee, and a few other high places. You catch my drift?"

Malone looks over his shoulder to make sure the Peacekeepers are still beyond earshot. "They even push Chief Technician Santos around, and she's a sweeheart. Knows how to keep her head down, but speaks up for us Techs when the Keepers cross too many lines. She's the only reason he didn't hand me a flamer and order me to 'clear a dig site'. Last Tech he sent out on punishment duty took a Flakthorn through the gut and died in Medical... Even the plants here hate us for some damn reason, man."

Shaking his head, Malone makes one last comment before hurrying out of the building. "Say the wrong thing, or see something you shouldn't, and next time it might be you."

---

A few moments later Billy approaches Mason Locke who eyes him up and down. "About time they send me some backup! You missed all the fun though, probie." Locke slaps Billy on the shoulder. "Cmon, follow me back to the office so ol' Chief Locke can give you a quick tour of the amenities."

Mason Locke leads you north - past SciDev Chief Santos and the gaggle of flustered Technicians, and away from Malone and Clara - out through the loading bay doors at the rear of the workshop. You immediately spot what appears to be a concrete bunker in the distance, overlooking the barbed-wire and metal-plated fence surrounding this facility. The bunker's metal door chimes and grinds open as you two approach. "Welcome, Peacekeepers."

Immediately inside you see a few faded cots, a dusty computer terminal on a desk, a small fridge, a rickety folding table strewn with playing cards, dented lockers, and a metal hatch in an alcove.

"This here is Watchtower North. In each watchtower you will find an access terminal and a locker full of riot gear. If shit hits the fan, or these degenerates riot, use that terminal to seal the blast door, lower the security shutters, and unlock the armory. Then, you go down."

Pointing at the metal hatch in the corner, Locke continues, "Each watchtower is connected to a site-wide tunnel network that'll get you into any adjacent building. Use the front door when you want to be seen, and the sub-basements when you don't. Always keep them guessing. Just remember to follow the signs on your Codex GPS from point A to point B, keep your head on a swivel in case of trouble, and don't stick your nose where it doesn't belong. Going down the wrong tunnel can get you killed, or worse."

Locke does not elaborate, and you can't tell if he's joking.

"Going forward, you can access the Peacekeeper Network via Codex. Read the manual thoroughly and refer to it often. Anytime there's an incident or inquiry, they'll ping local Peacekeepers. There are also bounties, patrol gigs, and information-gathering ops for hire if you're up for it. Abide by whatever rules they outline, get the job done, and you'll do fine. Now... Until you find proper housing, you can use one of these old cots. Ain't much, but its better than a hard floor. I'd suggest you head into town and look around, maybe pick up some supplies. You can hitch a ride on the shuttle that's arriving soon; otherwise, feel free to explore the facilities here. Things run smoother when folks know the Peacekeepers are watching."

Chief Locke opens the hatch as his Codex flashes and beeps three times. "Shit, I'm running late for a meeting. Try not to burn the place down, alright?"

Moments later you're left alone in a dusty concrete bunker to ponder what you learned and what to do next.

---

Meanwhile, Clara approaches the workshop floor and meets a dejected-looking SciDev Admin and Chief Technician Santos. "Oh honey, I'm sorry you had to see that on your first day."

She appears to try and calm you with a warm smile despite a mix of sadness and frustration to her gaze. "Sometimes the tech we find, or fix, gets claimed by any number of rival organizations. Sentinels, Engineers, Surveyors, Gardeners, Couriers, for example, plus all the major Corps and their subsidiaries. Inevitably, factions get upset if they don't get priority; more so depending on who they think was favored and why. Politics, same as anywhere. Eventually, a few Peacekeepers arrive to ensure compliance: and where some take a diplomatic approach, others are more... Hands-on, as you saw with Malone and Chief Peacekeeper Locke."

Santos picks up what's left of the now-broken part thrown by Keeper Locke and holds it up palm-open. "We can't replicate this type of modular Pre-Colonial tech: we don't have the schematics, the materials, the personnel, or the industry. When a machine breaks down, the only way to find replacements is to cannibalize a similar device; jury-rig a fix using miscellaneous parts from different machines; or hope someone eventually finds a part we need, realizes that's what it is, says they're willing to trade for it, and no one with higher authority, or a criminal element, snaps it up first. Needless to say, its a huge deal whenever someone finds tech in the wild... Assuming they survive the trip."

Chief Santos leads Clara to a messy workstation in the corner where she rummages inside a drawer for something, while also pulling out a small silver tube hanging on a cord around her neck. "This is an Omni-tool: a priceless Pre-Colonial artifact capable of physically and digitally interfacing with Pre-Colonial machinery: anything from Printers, to Network servers, orbital defenses, to the generators keeping this whole operation going. We can't do our jobs without one, though plenty of people would burn this entire facility to the ground for the chance to steal it. These things came down from space with the Founders... Not to mention, someone could cause a disaster by poking at critical infrastructure without authorization, common sense, or skill. Now, this one here is mine. Its what gives me a seat on the Coucil for Scientfific Development, and the only reason Lithos Corp gets anything done these days."

Sliding the omni-tool back under her overalls, Santos hands Clara a belt laden with various tools. "Here are all the standard gizmos you'll need to do your job: whether that's fixing a mining rig, running maintenance routines on Surveyor equipment, or getting one of our put-put vehicles to actually run. Some of them are Colony-made analog tools, and some are mini omni-tool derivitives with a far more limited functionality. Don't lose them, don't trade them, and keep your labcoat snug over the belt so no one sees something shiny and gets any funny ideas."

"For your first few days here, I suggest the following: head into town to get supplies and learn about the area; do a bit of tinkering and see what you can fix or build with all these random parts strewn about; or look for out-sourced jobs on the Technician Network. I would not suggest you go out scavenging alone. It can be quite dangerous between the aggressive wildlife, rogue elements, and various automated security systems. Unless specifically authorized, you are not to venture beyond the Containment Zone surrounding this facility, the main road north through the next few towns, and the capitol city of Port Altarax itself. Your Codex will warn you if you're venturing out too far, and Peacekeepers may be dispatched to collect you."

Santos' Codex chimes three times and emits a blue light. "Looks like I'm being summoned for a meeting. Feel free to ping my Codex if you have any further questions or concerns. For now, keep your head down, do your job, and get acclimated. Life isn't easy here, but we all make due as best we can."

With that, she shakes Claras hand and departs in a hurry toward Site Administration.

BILLY & CLARA, what would you like to do next? (I'll keep things more streamlined for a bit now, since I've bombarded y'all with more than enough in-universe lore to digest, lol)

Options: (you can try to do multiple things, and I'll let you know what happens. Let me know if you want to prioritize anything specific. You can also conduct ACTIONS, or QUERY things that come to mind. QUERYing your CODEX is an a semi-instantaneous action and can be done while you're otherwise busy, working, or travelling. Its capable of displaying 3D holograms, digital text, video, and a whole host of unique utilities. Eventually you can acquire new software, access new Networks, higher access tiers, better jobs, and a list of contacts and Points of Interest.)

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY: Explore the Lithos Mining Corp facility for a few minutes: anything specific you'd like to look for or do? Tinker? Look up a map? Patrol? Chitchat with other workers?

(You can query your Codex at any time and see what comes up.)

VITAL TASK: Catch the northbound shuttle into one of the local towns, or Port Altarax city proper. (there's a landing pad near the north gate with a digital sign: "SHUTTLE: ETA 00:30")

OPTIONAL SUGGESTION: Query your Codex for odd jobs: (you have access to the Colonial Citizen's Network, the Lithos Mining Corp Network, and alternately the Technician or Peacekeeper networks. Some jobs require multiple individuals of various disciplines.)

Note to self:

make a basic map

type up character sheets with your new gear, Network list, contacts, and work duties.

Create a list of Points of Interest for y'all to visit, explore, acquire goodies, meet new NPCs, and get into trouble at. For now, I've got a rough idea in mind as this entire setting is pulled from some scifi stuff I've written over the last two decades. Still, I'd like to iron out the details so y'all have more clarity.

Small update to the spoilertext in OP listing current players and NPC's. Very basic for now. Will add more as I go. Sick as a dog right now, so I'm typing whenever the meds don't knock me out.
