Hey so I am still in the midst of my turn over at the Museum, but I had an idea

I'm with Salmeuk about wanting to do some adventure mode and to that end I'd say the only thing I REALLY want to do at Longnight is breed some dragons real quick to use for adventure mode

Other than that I was thinking we could make a minimum sized fort that is designed and catered for easy navigation in adventure mode and access to its resources. Sort of serving as a home base

Our goal is basically https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIRMkV0Kvxw

So this could be a sort of military academy or something that launches us in our efforts of doing so!

I like the sound of that. This world is getting some really interesting history, what with all the playing we've done

Hi! Sorry i disappeared for over a month. I'm still reading messages, and i want to play at some point in the future, maybe after a couple more weeks

An adventurer base sounds like a great idea! I have some ideas what it could be like, maybe a religious monastery/temple that would be welcoming to all kinds of adventurers, dwarf and non-dwarf alike. Led by a more pacifist type of Lorbam Egul dwarf, after the warmongering of the Umbrasouls

I'm gonna get to work on our base now. Temple sounds cool! Add an academy vibe and some cool stray beasts maybe?

Hope everyone is still interested in doing some adventuring here!

Hi! So, some funny things happened. Good news is this thread is not dead. I asked Maloy in July, if he had started doing the next turn. He said he hadn’t gotten anywhere with it, so I asked if I could play a “quick” turn to finish the fortress Longnight.

I was very slow, because I had a hard time wrapping up the fort or being motivated to play, and it was more fun to spend free time outdoors. But I got it done last week, and the save is back in Maloy’s hands. There’s probably a post coming about some adventure mode plans!

Anyways, here’s some writing for flavor.

Interlude: The Coming of the Crimson King

Iral ‘Astralathalius’ Crimsonreward arrived at Longnight wearing commoner’s clothes, and a steel pick, simple but well-crafted. He had decided to see this fort with his own eyes, without being guarded and pampered at all times. His skill in mining made him choose a miner’s garb as his disguise.

This fortress had been a thorn in his side for the past years, after they attacked the Wordy Dye without his sanction. Now the realms all over the Ageless World derided him as a warmonger. Astralathalius the Bloodhound. The Crimson Reaper. Dwarfbane. The Goblin-Curse.

To save face and keep the peace with Longnight, he had been forced to pass a bill that sanctioned and endorsed the war of the Umbrasouls. Even in Gateheaven, the dwarves had been quick to unite against a common enemy. Unity through bloodshed… what a hollow epithet for my rule, he thought.

Despite his resentment, he was curious to explore the fortress and see how they had managed to survive this long. As King Iral stepped into the temple-hall overlooking the ancient lake, seeing the caverns stretching below him, goblin-caps submerged in the lake’s shallows… He stopped, and merely stared for a while. What a strange and amazing place.

“My lord liege!” a female dwarven voice shouted in amazement behind him. It was ‘Orlondok’ Ceilingrags, a dwarf of Gateheaven. His disguise had been called. Well, he had managed to get a decent walking tour on his own. He had seen the catacombs that rivalled Gateheaven’s, the trophies of demon and forgotten abominations, the war beasts. This was a fortress of war, with something darker than Gateheaven lurking under the surface. A venomous touch of the deep dark.

Soon, an excited crowd gathered around King Iral. He was escorted to meet a tribunal of dwarves: a duchess, a mayor and a former overseer, two of them hiding their faces from him, the third not so much. Thob ‘Maloy III’ Diamondhour wore a cursed artefact mask, and stifled a soft giggle. Iral had heard he was mad.

Mayor Jennifer Bearpost had come in her ceremonial military uniform which left little to imagination. This dwarf’s obsession with ritualistic nudity puzzled Iral greatly – as did many dwarven traditions.

The duchess of Cryptrush, Atir Razorscars the Kin of Skulls, reclined on a chair. She was rumored to be blind, and she looked like dwarven mince-meat. Mercifully, her ravaged face was concealed by Zamoth Thalal, the Venom of Empires – a face veil.

“What brings you to our hole in the ground, your grace?” Atir growled.

“I’m doing what I should have done much sooner. What I must do”, King Iral said. “I have come to rule.”

Image 1: Top: Rete Vs the elves.
Bottom: Attack on the merchants.

The Siegebreaker: Tale in Three Parts
Summer 188

Part One, Savior.
In early summer of 188, a large contingent of elves, war elephants and leopards decided to assault Longnight. After seeing the closed door, they took the detour through the caves. And there they ran into Rete Slitheredcrawl, the Deferent Lobster.

A winged, hairy earthworm with a poison stinger. It had already killed another forgotten beast, Sarek Buriedfatal. And the elves were next. Their primitive weapons and war beasts stood no chance, and they fled the caverns, many running off into the depths, likely abandoning any hope of seeing the daylight again.

Part Two, Jailor.
Rete was applauded, and named as the ‘Siegebreaker’ of Longnight. But soon, its hunger for bodies to stab with its stinger became a growing problem. Two diplomats, Kenobi and Senator, arrived at Longnight for whatever diplomats do, and the Siegebreaker obliterated them.

It now held dominion over the surface as well as the cavern. It started to seem as if Longnight was under a different siege, held hostage by the very being that had protected it. It even attacked the human merchants who had traveled from the Rosy Empires with goods from those faraway lands.

Image 2: The Siegebreaker VS Ilatir

Part Three, Adversary.
Eventually, the Siegebreaker was lured into the mineshafts near the lava hallway entrance, and locked in. During this time, some migrants arrived, “despite the danger”. Fair enough. They were completely new “void dwarves”, not immigrants from past fortresses. Our civilization can now sustain itself and even grow in number, it seems like!

Later, the dwarves of Ilatir returned, to siege the fortress again. The Wordy Dye had amassed a mighty army of dwarves, not just goblins. They wore good armor, some even had steel weapons, and they rode on horseback.

This could have been a glorious battle for Ilatir, but alas, the Siegebreaker was released from the tunnels, and soon it was cutting a bloody swathe through the drarven ranks. It would have wiped out the whole army, but four dwarves stood up to stop its rampage. Dakost Neolanced (female sworddwarf), Eral Shoothold (male macedwarf), Fikod Laboredpatterns (male sworddwarf), and Mafol Boatcounsel the beast slayer, female sworddwarf.

They battered the beast with attacks, cutting out its wings, its stinger, and finally Mafol stabbed it with her steel sword, tearing its body apart. The siegers were already retreating, but the victorious dwarves stood there for a while, taking in the moment, and then departed with the rest.

well, friends. As you may recall this whole campaign has been a meat grinder. Fun one too! Took out a goblin civilization and carved out a chunk of land for our previously extinct kingdom.

We're still being hit from all sides though and the moment we kill an army and get it off our backs we get hit by a mega beast! This world is still insane.

So, we need to change strategies....and well. At the end of the day I think this would be a lot of fun.

Proposing:

The Academy of Conquest
Or
The Temple of Slaughter

I'm split on names, but either way in this era armies aren't working anymore. You need a full army to simply hold the line, so our king has decreed that a generation of heroes must be raised up to claim these lands for our people!

The game:
Adventure mode
Accomplish great deeds for the kingdom:
Slay the giant beasts (or tame)
Fight armies
Assassinate rulers
Convert populations (or wipe them out)

Whatever it takes to bring our banner to their lands! Then bring a trophy or sacrifice to the temple-academy.
Once we successfully bring enough worthy sacrifices to our bloodthirsty pantheon they will give us a special blessing.

I'll use my first turn to build our location.

Image: King has returned

The Return of the King
Autumn 188

King Iral ‘Astralathalius’ Crimsonreward was hanging out in the fortress as a visitor, and not doing any of the kingly stuff. That was odd, and not at all fitting the great fortress Romekanan and our whole civilization, so I used ‘makeown’ on the glitched king. Iral agreed to resume his duties. Soon after, he left the map and came back, announcing that “The King has returned!” Now Longnight could start the process of becoming a mountainhome.

During the time when the Siegebreaker was trapped in the tunnel, the fort was visited by Nganiz, the dragon! It was dubbed Taxedpearl after scoring its first kill, a gosling. Curiously, it had lived since the beginning of history without taking any lives.

It however wrought absolute havoc on the dwarven surface engineering, destroying large portions of the pavement that had covered the sand for years, and even collapsing a portion of the roof! After wrecking the above-ground constructions, it tried entering the front door and was quickly captured by a cage trap.

Image: the Dragon and the Gosling

Image: Nganiz destroys the roof

The ghost problem continued as bad as ever, there seems to be ghosts everywhere, no matter how many slabs are commissioned in the temples and crypts. An elven farmer was attacked by an elven ghost: Minaro Feciciciba the ghostly poet battered ‘Elinwen’ the planter! The legacy of the demon massacres of past years will apparently forever haunt this fortress…

The military was re-equipped when it was revealed that many had abandoned the use of steel caps, instead wearing the more comfortable cloth and silk caps. They seem to have missed the point that the caps are there to keep them alive, not just stylish. The uniforms were edited to strictly enforce steel cap use, and caps were forged to make sure there’s enough.

500 damaged clothes were sold to the merchants from the Artificial Pillars. The wagon entrance remained closed, because we don’t really need anything from the traders, and it’s pretty dangerous to bring wagons to this warzone fortress. The traders brought us more books, which was nice.

King Astralathalius made his home in the surface tower, and it was furnished into a joint throne room, bedroom and dining room. The glass roof was assigned as the royal tomb. When the furniture, engravings and display items were all placed, the king approved of his quarters.

Then he demanded that we seek the divine treasures, and the title of Mountainhome. To that effect, the underworld spire had been excavated and explored for many years, and the work was resumed and has been ongoing for the past few months. The goal would eventually be reached in the winter months of year 188, and those events will get their own little post.

Nganiz the dragon was later tamed skillfully by ‘Trainer’ Mamotcatten. This fortress is becoming quite a hub of dragon taming!

The dragons that the Umbrasouls captured earlier and their hatched offspring are being tended to by an old friend and enemy of Lorbam Egul, Stukos the Vampire Progenitor. Imagine if she could have known, that feeding on the blood of some Gateheaven dwarves would eventually lead her to a different fortress in a faraway land, where she would be locked up in a small room with a nest full of fire-breathing giant lizards…

But nevermind me, this post is the important one! If you want to go on an adventure in the world of Gateheaven and Longnight, just let us know! I'm not sure when the save is available but maybe soon-ish! (?)

I think this fortress gave me the most 'enemies can and will impact the physical environment of the game' feelings of any that I have played in the current version. From the vulnerable crankshaft powering that magma stack to the strange fortifications constantly being assaulted, and the sheer amount of constructions on the surface.. yeah.

Also, there's nothing like a years old forum thread popping back into your vision to really throw your mind back to those nolstalgic turns you played.

It warms my heart to see interest still here for this game  :'(

I got swamped by work, but I can finish up getting a base for our adventurers. I was gonna move our tame dragons there as well so people can claim one.

Still, what name would be best for our group?
I thought about bringing some pretty cool stuff into the game if we reach certain milestones too

Sorry this took awhile.

A Missive has been sent out to all corners of the Standards of Control
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Goal:
Our goal is to take as much territory, secure as much of ours that we already have and deal with all threats to the Standard of Control. We're still surrounded on all sides by enemy nations.

Because of the nature of this goal the adventurer you play needs to be a citizen of the Standard of Control. As of right now, only elves, humans and goblins are available to us. Unless you unretire-anyone and use a citizen of a previous fort.

"Why no dwarves?" You may ask! Well, remember we were an extinct civilization at the start of all this. We've conquered humans, elves and goblins so they are part of our natural population, but we never conquered dwarves. That was the intention with Longnight, but things got...difficult. So, if you want dwarves one of you needs to head to those mountains and take those fortresses for us!

Per turn we encourage you to bring back trophies and place them on the pedestals in the main hall

As the series goes on I plan to add onto the Divinehall. I sort of want it to have the vibe of the Heroes Guild from Fable. We'll port things over like our tame dragons and likely some other ridiculous options!

As far as Divinehall goes, you should be able to retire there no matter what. Each citizen is a tavern keeper so you can ask them to stay the night.

It's a pretty basic fort for starts, but if you've ever visited Ringboot in Museum III then you know I'm gonna get pretty elaborate with this as we go on. It's also way smaller than a normal fort and has a low population to reduce lag and the amount of pathing you need to do to get to the main hall to drop off trophies or pick up gear.

Unretire-anyone options directly from Divinehall(plus anyone else you can recall from previous forts) :

Also Elfybeans from Gateheaven came to visit us with his legendary spear. He's a good unretire option

Is anyone interested in reserving a spot? Here is the save for whoever wishes to go first!

ironic, but acceptable state of affairs.

I might have some time this next few days, I'll edit this post if I decide to grab the turn
