Bridges as smasher
« on: April 14, 2025, 11:49:19 am »

Hi,

I saw by accident when a dwarf was smashed by a down moving bridge. What a genious way to smash monsters !?

After reading that this seems really to work I thought about for several days now how this could be set up. But I cannot find a way by my own.

some thoughts:

Switching a brigde by means of a lever takes very long. Is this much faster using a pressure plate?
The bridge cannot be build overlapping with the pressure plate. How to arrange?
When a bridge is build, it is down by default. Before using it it has to load, means to bring it up. By a lever?

I try first things out by my own and ask only when I do not find a solution. And this is the case here.

Any screenshots? I found some but only with old ASCII style which I cannot read.

It's called a Dwarven Atom Smasher. An exploit as old as time.

Note the delay when using pressure plates to raise/lower bridges. Use that info to calibrate your DAS to smash unsuspecting victims.

Also, remember that, if you try and smash something too big, the bridge will deconstruct.

Btw, why not start a space program?

Really hoping somebody puts this in their signature.

a vampire or werecreature trapped in a room with a lever set to "repeat" is also a possibility. remember that the speed of triggering is related to the quality of mechanisms used to link the devices, so masterwork mechanisms are ideal here.

I recall launching a werewolf into space unintentionally while attempting to close the gate before it broke down the door. Watching it fly in that beautiful arc over the fort was very satisfying.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

If this is true, then the wiki is wrong and somebody needs to update it.

That's completely false - in Fortress mode, bridges always take exactly 100 ticks to respond to triggers, regardless of mechanism quality.

(in Adventurer mode they respond in just 5 ticks, but the whole game runs at a different speed in that mode anyways)

The only place where mechanism quality is important is in Stonefall and Weapon Traps, since it increases their effectiveness (increasing the attack "skill" or velocity). Notably, it does not affect the chance of a weapon trap jamming (that's a flat 50% regardless of quality, but only if the trap actually lands the killing blow).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
