I wanted to check how pump operating in the latest versions compares to military training for the purpose of increasing attributes, particularly strength. The results will shock you!

I locked two random dwarfs with similar strength in a room with food and equipment, and let them train for 6 months. The results, split into physical and mental:

Observations and conclusions

Military training is obviously more effective than pumping, and dwarfs gain useful combat skills instead of pumping.

Pump operating literally makes them dumber.

Secondary attributes affect the training in various ways. For example, a dwarf with low endurance (quick to tire) will get tired all the time, spend more time resting, and as a result train less, with a slower stat gain. Intelligence/focus/patience likely have similar effect on training.

The axedwarf in this test trained alone, purely by individual combat drills. Multiple dwarfs in a squad would be sparring, gaining stats even faster. Remember that now more than two dwarfs can spar in one session, and they no longer require high Fighting skill to start sparring.

The axedwarf reached Skilled level in his main combat skills in 6 months. The Pump Operator got to Grand Master.

Pump operating literally makes them dumber.

Pump Operator exercises Strength + Toughness + Endurance and Kinesthetic Sense + Willpower, so if that's all they do, then their other attributes will rust from lack of use. And your axedwarves also lost points in most of their mental attributes, so one could argue that it made them dumber too.

The Attributes wiki article has a table which lists all of the attributes trained by each skill, and soldiers train more than just their weapon skill - they also train Fighter and Discipline, and those come with their own attribute boosts.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Jarheads, what do you expect  :P

I imagine in a squad setting they would lose even fewer points in those, due to organizing and attending demonstrations.
