Mild mid-life crisis (crises?)
« on: September 12, 2025, 02:11:05 pm »

I just spent four figures (USD) on LEGO sets.

I just want the zen of building something and not focusing on the nonsense of the world.

I dont think its a crisis.  Will you be doing the modeled constructions?  By the instruction booklet or free-building?

I will ask you why you chose a physical device rather than something like minecraft or whatever.  I think that might tell you more about what your doing.

Yes some of the giant models.

Usually I build per the instructions first, then modify later.

I did physical instead of virtual because, well, tactile and it is, you know, tangible?  Kind of like "put your feet in the grass" or whatever.  It takes space, has weight, is constrained by physics... you can physically give it to someone else, and the only way it can be taken from you is if someone physically takes it.

It's something that can't be taken away by licensing issues, you don't need power, it doesn't have "bugs" or have your favorite feature patched out, or whatever...won't ever lose compatibility due to being "old tech"...  I mean I still have LEGO sets that I got for Christmas 40 years ago, and aside from some grime and maybe fading, they are just as serviceable.

what did you buy?

I have a huge lego and lego clones backlog... I'm currently building a chinese lego replica of a HIMARS rocket launcher.

I bought the UCS Millenium Falcon set.  Technically under $1000 but I rounded, because it was close enough once sales tax figures in.

I'm also going to have budget problems in the future because of this "coming soon."

I see nothing wrong with buying a bunch of lego stuff, I still mess around with legos every now and then.

My brother sent me the pieces to one of my favorite childhood sets last Christmas - it was one of my "most desired" presents.  I had to look up the instructions online because we lost them.

It confirms my suspicion: modern LEGO instructions are way simplified compared to "when we were kids."

I'm talking about The Legoland Airport released in 1985.  This is a 507 piece set, but its instructions are only 16 pages.  Most steps include several pieces all at once, without telling you ahead of time what you need, and they often require some spatial thinking.

I just did a modern set with 526 pieces, and its instructions are 138 pages and some pages literally have two images where you place literally one piece per image - so 2 pieces placed per page. The modern set averages 3.8 pieces placed per page.  The old airport averages 32 pieces per page.

Wow.

I miss when LEGO had to create their own stories because they weren't buying rights to fictional works.

Give me Generic Space Police versus Generic Space Villains over Star Wars Shit any day!

Ironically, as a kid, I actually really wanted franchise LEGOs when they didn't exist.  :-\

I thought they still did their own made up stuff, and not all of it was based on some IP.

Honestly, LEGOs, like a lot of the stuff from my childhood, has actually come down in price a bit once you understand inflation.

I remember getting LEGO sets in the 90s that cost about $100. Which sounds like the cost now, except that $100 in 1995 is equivalent to about $211 today...

Great Order

Honestly I'd be there with you if I hadn't got rid of all my childhood lego and would need to drop more money than I'd like to on some new stuff.
