how can i clear up the floor?
« on: November 29, 2008, 12:18:17 am »

hi. i am a DF noob! ;D

many of my dwarfs have died and their clothes are all over
the ground.  is there a way to dump or reclaim these
clothes?  none of the other dwarfs will pick them up no
matter what i do - i assume it's because they belonged to
fallen comrades. what can i do with all this mess!?   :D

hit k, cursor over them, and hit f over one of the things you're trying to get rid of.

(d)esignate -> (b) -> (c)laim

Will makes all of it unforbidden at once.  If that doesn't work, kill it with fire.

Make them invisible by designating them 'h'idden. It's not perfect but it won't clutter up your floor anymore.

You can try bringing them to the Trade Depot when a caravan arrives.

If nobody goes for them, turn off all labors for a couple dwarves.  It could be that they all think they have more important things to do.

do you have room in a finished goods stockpile for them to be stored in?

Have you considered the cleaning power of Magma™?

Are they all "forbidden"? By default, when someone is killed, his possessions are forbidden on death.

If you don't have a stockpile accepting silk or plant fiber goods then no one will move the stuff.

if the unforbidding method above don't works and you got room in your finished good stockpile, they might've been claimed by living dwarves, you can check by k'ing over them, and pressing enter for the item, it'll say who claimed it if it is.

Press k, move the cursor over the clothing, press enter. You should then see if it belongs to anyone.

If the previous owners have not decomposed yet, they still own the items I think, so build them tombs (coffin, cabinet).

Living dwarfs will drop their clothes sometimes, and this seems to be a big problem with soldiers.  My experience is that any owned clothing will never be picked up no matter the orders.

That is, unless the owner has a reason to pick it up.  So if your dwarf has a little dwarfy bedroom (wuss), then make him a pretty little dwarfy chest or cabinet to store his clothes in.  They'll eventually pick up their items and store them.  If they only have an assigned room with no storage, they'll sometimes litter the room with belongings.  My cougar bait nobles tend to have more clothes, so I have to build entire damn closets for the sissy jerks.  The storage activity tends to take a while to register, but you'll see improvements in cleanliness over time.

Proper action for any dwarf inconsiderate enough to leave stinky clothes lying around: magma shower.  More "dwarfane" action: build cabinets in assigned rooms.

thanks guys you cleared it all up! all these items belong to living dwarves as far as
i can see. either they went berserk and flung their clothes around, or else they
have claimed the clothes of dwarves who died (is that possible?). i am building
a million cabinets as i speak  :D

When dwarves die, their items (but not their rooms) go up for grabs.
