Title: From an age undreamed of. The third tale (SG)
Post by: Funk on March 29, 2019, 04:53:20 pm
"Between the time when the Titanomachy fell and rise of the Etruscans, there was an age undreamed of.

A time when the axe ruled the land, An age of mighty kingdoms, forged from blood and steel.
When ones life was worth only what the blade in hand made it.

Vote count is a tie so coin flip time, 2 so the second choice.

You're a Sabine noble, well a noble with only a few penny's to your name and no land.
The horse's roached back sways as you ride along the lonely road, the spitting drizzle soaks your cloak thru.

But then it hits you full in the nose, the stinking smell of decay, an up ahead you see it.
By the foot of large tree there a man, he's holding most of his insides in his arms.
He struggles for a few last breaths, you listen in close as splutters out a late warning of bandits.
You do your best to make him comfortable while he pass on.
Carrying him in to the next town down the road, a small place called Susmont.

The villagers soon gather, nervous of a stranger but your soon in side what passes for a tavern.

"Poor dominik , at first we thought it was a joke but these raiders have grown much bolder then we ever dreamed.
Murder, we must do something, you must hep us." the villages spokes man trys to implore you to help

"Me? but i'm a-"
"But what? this is not your fight? I know that.
You did us all a favor in bringing dominik's body home, and i, we thank you for that.
But your nearest to a warrior this village has seen in years.
We can pay you, not the bandits, pay a bandit once an you'll still be paying until the stars fall from the sky.
so will you help us?" he asks you.

"Sure" you agree to the task.

"Brilliant, hear i'll tell you want we know about them."
He pulls out a cloth map, you can see the village marked on it.
"We're here, that's the common, sparrow wood and there on the north side in the old mine workings is where i think there based.
Bakur will go with you, he's a good lad an knows his way around there."

Bakur is outside, he's little more a youth then man, his beard thin an wispy.
"So your the stranger, you got a name?" he asks
"Yes an your to take me to this bandit camp."
"ok them miss mysterious."

You follow him up the hill and across the meadow, down in to the woods.
You soon reach a shallow cliff and down below it you can see a single smoldering camp fire.
In the dim light you manage to count 4 bandits, there not an impressive lot, none of them have swords and only one of them has a helmet.

Your plan is to

A)Sneaking an poison there food?
B) Burn there encampment?
C) Attack them.

Bakur guide, hasa bow.

C. Directly confront the bandits. Have Bakur cover you from a vantage point with his bow. Before engaging in combat, try to talk to the bandits and ask them about Dominik. Should the bandits openly attack in response, Bakur is to fire upon them while you battle them back with your superior equipment.

"I'm going down there, you stay here an wait for my signal." you tell Bakur an he nods.
You work your way around down the slope, your stomach flutters with nerves.
You pull your cloak closed, take comfit as you feel your Kopis's hilt and the brass dragons glass eyes under your thumb.
You heart races as you boldly step in to the clearing.

"How are you! Oh he's sent a wore at last!" one of the bandits booms on seeing you.

"Watch your tongue brigand. You tell why you did it an you might leave here alive." you snap back at him as your Kopis flashes out from the cloak.

"Oh so you think you can use that girly? come on give that here.." he picks up a club and approaches you.
He stands up tall in front of you, face raw an red from bad shave, his breath smells of liquor.

As he snatch towards your sword, your to late in pulling back from him and he grabs your wrist, his foot sweeps your leg out from under you and he falls on top of you.

You punch him hard in the mouth, his yellow buck teeth shatter an you roll out from under him.
as you stand up an arrow whistles past your neck far to close for comfit.

The other three bandits are down to two but no less eager to fight, the first one comes at with an axe, the blade smacks to in your bronze bust.
You stagger back with the impact, counter with a slash across his face, parting the bridge of nose in return.

The second one looks at you, eyes focused hard, then an arrow pieces his hand.
Both of the bandits are stunned for a moment as they take in whats just happened, so you attack them.
You attack with a low sweep, going under the bandits guard, and your Kopis slices foot from ankle.

The last one turns and runs.
Now that you have scattered the bandits what do you do now.

Bakur guide, hasa bow.

Panic a little bit. That was way too close, and a bit traumatizing. Look to Bakur for some advice, and perhaps emotional support.
"Tha..that was far too close he.. he he neary got me" you stutter, filled with adrenalin and fear.

The bandit with freshly broken teeth groans as he stands up.
"No you die killer!" you shout  as you ram your Kopis thru his belly.
"An you too! murders!" you finish the other two off with a pair for swift slashes.

stuned by your own vilance you turn to Bakur for some emotional support.
"Yer take that!" he shouts as make obscene gesture and yells about fleeing bandits parentage and there sexual tastes.
Not much in the way of support there so you sit down and catch your breath.

With the bandits vanquished you loot there small encampment finding little of use or value.
A helmet, old and rusted thin, a water skin, an a dead rat.
None of it worth anything.

You head back in town with dead bandits on your horse.

The villages spokes man greets you with applause and a smile.
"You've do it stranger! there gone! Come every one quick see!"
The villagers start to gather around and find your self at the center of a impromptu party.

Your in the middel of the third tanked of ale when the spokes man hands to a bag of coins with a smile.

"an this if for you as well." he smiles as passes you a sack.
Inside the sack is?

It the cold and head pounding light of the next morning that open the cloth sack.
The not much inside, seventeen carved ivory bead, and a pair of small figures,
One is a rhino with a topless woman riding it, her right arm broken and her flaking off the gold leaf.
The others a bird with a tiny silver snake it its mouth.

Haveing been paid you get back on the road and by night fall you reach the gates of Aquilon, the capital of Aquilonia.

"Oi Yu, state your name an business here." the guard man blocks your path with a spear.
"Travel" you state.
"Name, for the list" he sighs
"List?" you ask.
"for security purposes, now name or your not come in."  he moans a often repeated spiel.
"Valeria Freninatia" He shrugs and wave you in to the city walls.

You soon find lodging in a tavern, and after a bowl of beef stew you settle down for the night.
As drawn brakes you have time to head in to the market.
The idea new purchases fills your mind as does the idea of finding some work.

(All purchases are one unit of Money.
And yes you have a name now)

Lets go buy a helmet, a pair of gauntlets, and a shield then lets go look for some work.

+1 adventure awaits

You eat what passes for an early breakfast, bread and best of last night stew and head out.

The town is crawling in to life as the sun warms the muddy streets,You hear a commotion in square and wander towards it.

Standing on the steps to the palace is woman, she's half undressed in her bare under linens but surrounded by a dozen armored guardsmen.
With a gay abandon she blindly throws off a girdle of silver plate and garnets, sending it in to the crowd below.
The woman is clearly important but discards her cloths freely, your perplexed by the scene, is this some kind of religious penance?

Heading towards the traders stalls, you duck a boot, the silver heels shine in mud before you for a monument be for a beggar pounces on like wild cat.
Ignoring the woman, you focus on trade and the items you came here for.

The choices of shields is thin, you end up with a simple pine shield, shaped in a long hexagon with three cross straps and center grip under a round iron boss.

In the place of gauntlets you find a pair of leather gloves with iron scales on the back and down the fingers.

But the last item on your list is beyond your purse and so your helmet less.
You head back to your lodging  to see what merchant might have work for you.
Its only as you buy a tanked of ale that it dawns on you, the striping woman from the market, her face is clear on the coin under the words, Sub-Rex Avelot.
The queens younger sister, the Princess Royal.

The politics of day slowly unfold, and a opportunity is clear.
The citys ruler is the Princess Royal Avelot and for some reason she is looking to hire mercenarys.
Another hour and you find out why, it's her husband, lord Gauda the son of Hiempsal and grandson of Juba , and lord of eastern Inumiden.
The man is wealthy from his silver mines but his wealth is under threat by his neighbors and rivals.

But you hear of other work, merchants headed north to the lands of the Kadalsson Dynasty  in need guards.

A) Be a mercenary.
B) Be a caravan guard.

The idea of being a mercenary excites you with the promise travel and adventures.

You buff your cuirass to shine, tie your hair back and head straight to the recruiter.

The smokey room is full odd people, fighters from lands far and wide, that boast with foreign tongues.

The captain looks you up and down as you puff out your chest as stand as tall as you can.
"So, you know how to use do you lass?", he stares you stight in eye as he asks.
"Yes." your blunt and firm eyes locked on his.
"You've kill before an you mint to do it.
I like that in a fighter, a hard heart.
Well whats your name?"

"Valeria Freninatia"
"Mark the roll," he places a silver cent talent on the table and pass you a quill.
You write your name in full next to a line of X and simple letters.

"Welcome to the company Valeria.
We leave by boat tomorrow, you can stay here until then.
an do your self a favor get to know some of the others."

You soon find your self talking with:

A) The woman in the corner, sharpening a sword.
She has near-white hair in a ponytail with sapphire blue eyes, a mail vest and around her neck is spiked steel collar.

B) The archer in a dice game, his bare muscle bound chest is covered twisting tribal war tattoos.
C) The huge bear of a man, with his morning-star thas nearly as tall as you are.
D) The lost and despite looking Askuzai, her boots are encased with mud, her hair is in a long golden ponytail , she holds odd spear, the head is bird shaped , with silver wings and ratting feathers.
E) The breaded swords man with horn scale shirt and two handed blade across his shoulders.

"You mined if join you?" you ask the breaded swordman.
"No sit down...So tell me whats a cute girl like doing in company like this?..."
The swords man's called Soion and as you soon find out he's gambler at heart willing to take a flutter on anything.

The next morning you and the rest of the mercenarys board the ship to take you to the land of Inumide.
It's a long voyage, the sun soon starts to beat down on deck and below becomes a sweltering coffin of wood.
After half a week of the beating sun the boat pulls in to anchor at the port of Mizya.

A captain meets you all on the dock and with the rest of the mercenary's are split up in to groups of 10 and given a task.

You sent to

2) Patrols to stop raiders.

1 (attacked)

Your sent with the rest of your party to go and guard the mines.
This sults you all but Vorrush the silver hair woman with the spiked steel collar that mutters some plea to her gods and Silrera the Askuzai, who nods despondently.

There's little in the way of directions given to you, more a map of the land and orders to guard it.

But then the captain looks you dead in the eye when he hands you a pendant, one one face a coat of arms, the other a marking rune.

"Keep this, let none of them fall in to enemy hands and be back here with it before the next moon.
For this marks you as one of our side, fail to return in time and you'll be taken for spy's or dead."

The disputed land is the mountains, the river and two lines of hills, the mines are scattered around the mountains and multiple sluice boxes down the river.

Your currently at Lazi, a walled camp above the cliffs, below you is one of mines working, more a peppering smoking holes then any mine you have seen before.
The dark skinned locals are hard at work, digging bell shaped pits down in to the ore bed and cracking the rock with fire to win there silver from it.
In the distance you can see them working sluice box's an pans by the river.

Your still a distance from the river, riding along the banks when a spearhear flash in bush an you spy some raiders.

Lets go after the raiders we saw in the bushes.

+1, see if we can do it stealthily. So we can ascertain numbers, weapons, and such without them knowing we're there.

The need for you to ascertain there numbers and arms is tempered by your wish not to alert them, well not alert them that you have seen them.

You bring your horse to a halt and wait until Vorrush draw close to you,p assing her the water skin from your saddle you keep your voice low.
"The second bush by that big tree, don't look to closely but there there, past it on to the others while we rest for a minute."

"Is it time for Vokotz to drink?"
"what? who? No! just ... wait a bit for the others we all do this."

As the party rests and ready them self's you take a minute to scan the landscape, looking for more raiders.

You count only three raiders and there not fearsome sight, skinny dark skinned men with small spears.
If it weren't for you orders to guard agent raiders you would take them for hunters.

You tell Skir the archer to hang back while Gorgamm and Silrera head towards the river to flank the raiders
That is until the raider in the bush nearest you jumps up right and blows a horn.
As it echos you hear battle crys from the bushes behind you, and glance back to see half a dozen more men surrounding you.

Stand an fight or flee?

------------

"Lets do this!" you shout as you un-sling your shield and draw sword.

Meeting first of the raiders at a run smash his spear back from his grasp, in one slice you spill his entrails about his feet.
You run to the next one, roll under his thrust and return with a flurry of blows, a cut to the for arm shows red and the white of bone.
Smashing the pommel in the side of his head, you then pull back for a second blow that cuts his lower jaw free.

The moment your free from combat you look around at the others.
To the left you see Soion ram his great thru a mans mouth, shattering teeth before it exits.
On the right Vorrush is trapped next to Skir by a trio of spear men at once, Vorrush's blade flashing before her, as it claims a bite from over eager spear mans hand.

From the rear there's a cry, you turn to see Silrera fall as spear rips thru her calf.
They pounce on G , his morning star smashes the first ones ribs apart but there like a wild pack and spear burst thru his chest before he falls.
You rush to the aid of Silrera, as Skir's arrows whistle over head.

A javelin cuts your forearm open as you charge, the first raider stabs at you spear head digging in to your thigh.
You grit your teeth in pain an bash a second trust aside with your blade before you carve a steak from mans shoulder with a sloppy swing.

Silrera is unsteady on her one good leg an your not much better, the both of you are save more by the raiders declining will to fight then any great skill.
There no end so much as they stop, and then one turns an runs, the rest follow.

You cost the cost and you bind each other wounds, your leg is swore but you are helped back in to the saddle while Silrera protests amount something you frankly don't care to hear, if she wants walk then so be it.

The main good news is that the raiders must of been successful before they meet you, a heavy bag of raw silver ore is found in there effects, even split  among you it's worth a fair penny (Money + 3)

Now as the party limps back to camp you wish only to rest but the rumors disturb you.
It's a grim tale of a sorcerer giving men the power to walk over fire, making blades dull on there body's, they tell that the sorcerer can even walk around with a blades thru his chest.

You rest for rest of the week, mostly eating portage and guarding one of the larger mines.

Theirs a lot of time time spent listening to the miners story's and tales.
The one that grips you mind is one that you half ignore, he's a poor story teller and a little to drunk, prone slurring his words.

You miss most of it, there's a she vipers with human form that curses a rude king, a hero prince, a pair of twins babes eaten in spite, an a few gods, in short you get that the rich king is cursed for lack of a few coals to make her fire, an so she births out a swarm of monsters to rival Echidna's brood.

But what you most remember is not the bit where the monster breath makes the kings flash fall from his bones, like resin from a pine-torch, or any of the dreadful fates but the gold and jewels.
For there at lest real, well you don't think there a pools of quick silver and an  sky of silver nor a thousand gold steps up to the palace  but there must be some truth.
And given how theirs a fallen landslide an well so what if the tale has the prince throw the mountain down on the monsters is a myth, theres bund to be some gold there.

Other then the endless tales of the past, are reports and rumors of the sorcerer and a war-band gathering to storm your side of the river.

Your almost happy to return to the risk and danger of patrols once your leg heals.
Days pass as you wander with out engaging the enemy raiders, maybe you've build a reputation.

At drawn on the third day there smoke in the distance, a hazy fog in the sun.

"I smell battle, the gods will soon drink the wine of men." Vorrush grins as she points to the distance.
"what?" you ask half stunned my the idea.
"There's a war party just over that hill an its headed this way."

1: Ride back to warn the others and almost certainly end up in a battle.
2: Head for the mythic treasure in the mountains.
3: Ride way to elsewhere?

In minutes your campfires out an on your horses, riding hard back to Lazi, the walled camp.
The mid morning sun beats down hard as reach the gates.

Inside the walls your taken before the captain and quizzed about the enemy, everything from there numbers, plans, to there weapons and armor and even what there eating.

Once his questioning stops you have to face the barrage again as every one an there dog asks you repeatedly about the enemy.

As the day draws on more and more scouts return echoing your report as the camp fills with men readying for a battle.

You sleep little that night, your mind full with the battle to come, an so the night spent honing your blade an buffing your cuirass.

The drawn birds chorus is broken by the sharp horns and steady beat of drums.
You can see there sorcerer lifted up a top on a shield, he's just a small unimpressive man in white robes holding a torch.
He spits out a gout of flame, much to the cheer of the assembled troops.

The captan give the orders and you soon find your self:

1) In the ranks and waiting?
2) At the flank atop your horse?

There only one last thing you have to do, is decide how far your willing to go for glory at the greater risk to your self.

2. Better to have the option of fighting on horseback than being stuck on our feet.

Also, death or glory.

Your on your horse , waiting in a wooded grove.
You can her both sides war drums and battle horns, the whistling of arrows and exchanging javelins as the battle start.

With yells both sides clash with spears on shield, axe on helm!
There a slow count from the captain "1...2...3..." his voice tense as he reach's 30 "Now! charge!" he shouts as  horse wheels and he draws his sword.

Galloping from grove, you ride together in wide circle around the back of the battle lines.

The pounding drum beat sings in your chest calling you to death and battle.
Ignoring the others you spur your horse on faster, it slams in to there rear ranks, an your swords flashes down like lighting as hoofs trample men.

Your eyes see a warrior, a tall woman an well armored she's giveing orders, an officer.
Some one there glory in faceing.

At that moment the horse buckle under you and hit the ground hard.

Rolling to your feet, you rip in to there ranks like a rabid wolf, blood flys as you bite with a steel blade.
You dunk a spear, knock a sword aside an ram your sword thru a man.
Kicking a shield aside you hack a hand from its arms.

Men flee from you as you howl like a beast, an point your Kopis at the officer.

They meet your eyes with a grin, drawing long basted sword and pointing it back at you.

There first blow numbs your shield arm, you step closer and slash at her face.
She pulls her sword up blow it and returns with a pommel strike that brushes past your ear.
You throw her to ground, face first in the mun and you stamp on her back not once but four or five times until she lies still.
Wild eyed you stare the enemy around you, your hair an face red an gore soaked.

Then the world goes black as something hits your from behind.

Your head hurts when you awaken, your chest and limbs are bruised and there a lump on head.
"Well your awake at last, feeling like hammered shit?"  Soion asks
you nod.
"ehg.. what happened? one minute i was fighting them and the next."
"and there next you go hit by a horse, charge off ahead first an thats what happens.
Still its not all bad news your due a reward from the prince for killing that officer, now eat an get some rest." he passes you a bowl of meat soup.

For the next week you do little but rest, you black eye and bruising turns purple an fades, the split lips heal an you just start to feel better.

Its a week after the battle that you get your rewards.
The prince has come with his wife to make a tour of his holding, well there his for now, the battle has seen to that.

Almost the entire number of mercenary and most of his army are gathered in the camp.
You get the full entrance with the pomp and falir, horse men blowing horns, a speaker proclaiming " his magnificence the lord prince Gauda I, son of Hiempsal, grandson of Juba VI"

The officers get there rewards first but soon your called up, the speaker announces your victory over the enemy officer.

Gauda smiles as he passes you a heavily cloth bag and helmet, you take them an bow, letting the next warrior come up for there reward.

It's a impressive helmet, a rounded bascinet, with a skull faced klappvisor.
The helmets sides an crown is covered in small spikes, the chain aventail has a decorative band of brass links.

The only bad news for you is that the there soon to be no more work for you here.
And that mean you need to look for new work some where.
or head for that treasure in the mountains...

Definitely not disagreeing with that part of it. I'm just curious to what extent Funk would do rolls for, in regards to perception checks.

If a helmet acts as a penalty to perception checks, especially in dark tunnels where we could easily ambushed, it just becomes a matter of cost/benefits.

( only closed/visor helmets get penaltys to perception checks and only when the visor down.)

With your new helmet on you soon head towards the mountains and long buried loot.

It's dull trip the two of you and pair of pack mules carrying your supply's and tools.

The mountain sides is covered in scrub and bushes but by the first after noon you find a few pieces of cut stone, half burred but there clear proof that your in the right place.

It takes you most of the next day to find where to start, and in the end it sames so simple that your shocked that its taken you so long to find it.

A the top of a small stream bed, there a thin line of the broken stone bricks, a drain.

You start digging there, in to the mountain side, makeing fast and sure progress as you remove more bricks as the shaft gets deeper.

It takes you four days of hard labor from the both of you to reach the next step, the layer of bricks widens and then finally it gives way to nothing.

The smell of old stagnant water and stale air hits you, you've found it.
But as you wave a torch thru in to cavern, you see it, a thing, some monster.
Its manlike, it pale flesh is ghostly white and covered slim, as you craw back wards it turns to face you, with it's beady red eyes and dripping mouth filled with needle like fangs.

It hiss's at and darts towards you only to get your touch in the face.
Bursting to the day light you grab your sword stair at tunnel waiting for them the follow you.

There unwilling to brave the midday sun, but you can see them waiting in the gloom of the tunnel for darkness.

What now?

I'll admit that i'm not keeping a perfect track of your inventory, only the major items are listed as i don't whan't to do lots of book keeping and encumbrance counting.
I'm willing to let you have anything you reasonably have on you or near you.
I.E. right now a pocket knife, a burning log from the campfire, a rope, a spade or pick, a bed roll or caldron with your dinner in it.
Really anything that might be around is fair game if you can argue it.

You try to throw bricks that the leach man, but it backs away in to the tunnel.
It's hard to hit it, the tunnel is small, barely big enough of you to work bent over in, and the angle shields it from your throws.

Out of bricks, you stare at it an they the idea hit you, Bait.
You try throwing you're dinner in the tunnel mouth, it quickly darts forwards to eat the bacon from bowl your dinner.
That meant that you can hurl a brick clearly at it the lech-man's head,  it white skin splits open and shrieks in pain.

Angered it rush's towards you, you try to hack it down but your sword is too late an whistles thru the empty air.
Its fanged mouth suckeres around your sword arm numbing it in an instant.
Soion sweep at it legs, sword parting as it fall , thrashing and shrieking wildly.
You kick it away from you and Soion strike it with all his might, splinting it from belly an chest from what remains of it legs.

With it dead, you binds your arm and wounder whats else in side the tomb and do you what to risk it?

Ok this is the post dysentery and broken PC up date.

An i'm back early.

Let us check our arm then venture forth.
+1 Combining both ideas into one sounds better than keeping them seperate

You bind your bleeding arm and the both of you head in to the mine and the tomb beyond.
It's dark inside the shadows from your torches hide things, one moment it's another monsters the next it's a wall of dirt.

You round the conner, passed the rotted door, there's a small tunnel and you can see a pair of egg, there white vianney mass's pulsating in the darkness.
The rest of the former palace is half covered in dirt and droppings from the leach beast.

But there loot to be had here, you quickly start throwing anything you can sell in to a bag.

On one corpse there’s calfskin shoes with silver buckles, on another an earring and a hair ornament.
The bag soon fills with items worth sale at town.
You have little love for the damp an musty holes in the ground so you begin the ride back to the port city of Mizya.
You have an easy time selling the treasure, even the broken bits are taken for good coin.

With a heavy purse on your hip you take lodging in a up markert taven, a place where you get a private room and the offer of attractive company after dinner.

The morning comes soon and you have a new day to meet.

I shall add nice easy to read item types before the descriptors
-------------

You have a simple plan, return to ruins and see what else there is worth takeing.

But before that you have shopping to do at the armours,
It takes while but the third helmet fits Soion, it's a flat top helm made of iron with a pointed, M shaped opening that leaves the eyes and mouth exposed, and the pointed nose guard protects the nose. (-1 Money)

As you leave the stall you feel a hand tug at your belt and warring cry "Theft! A pick pocket!"
You turn to face them as your purse spills on the floor and the rouge dives into the crowd.
There's little you can do but collect your spilt purse and be thankful that you keep it only half full.
(-1 Money)

You have to buy more supplys, if your to truely see what the tomb holds then you'll need more then just a shovel an pick.
Hireing miners is easy but they strike a hard bargain, there work is risky at the best of times but the offer of coin up front does much to persade them.
(-1 Money)

The trip back to the mine is uneventfully dull.

Work soon gets underway, while the miners are disturbed by the leach beast's body and make you burn the eggs.
Only after the mines are flooded with the smoke of pungent incense, do any of them enter the mine.

The next two days pass with the steady filling of your loot chest (+3 money?) then trouble arrives in the form of an armed band of nine.

It's easy to spot there leader, she's the best armour with a battered yushman of mail an plate.
Beside her is a man you recognise from the battle, he was on your side.
There leader stops outside of javelin range, looks at you with her one good eye
She yells her name "I am Wulfhild! the Widow-maker of three score men!
You are trespassers here Leave! Or Else-wise.." she states her demand, drawing a long sword to make the or else clear.

1: Pack up an leave?
2: Try to bribe her?

"Run!" you shout as you run in to ruins.

There's chaos as the miners scatter about, many pushing past you as you reach the centre of the digging.

"Hah hah oh what are you doing? i'm not after a fight if we can help it.
You too! Stay here and keep them in there.
The rest of you dog search the camp! they most of found something to pay for all this."

"Valeria What does she what?" Soion asks you
"Us to leave so she can take over the ruin an have all the treasure for her own."
"Well lets think about it, how many are there?"
"Nine, why you planing on fighting them?
"What else? We stay in here an she takes off with all our stuff?
"There well armed, she's got a fancy mail coat an sword, two others have some as well but the rest are not that well armoured.
Maybe if we had a surprise and rushed them, that might work if we take some of them before the others can help them."

You planing is interrupted by a cheer, your strong box has been found.

"No wait! That's madness.
Let them take it, then we tack them an take it back."

Its a short wait, as your camp site is quickly turned upside down.

You hear there shorts of joy when your strong box is found.
It's not long before its carried away, an on your own horse no less!

You wait until the robbers are gone before you leave the mine.

The camp has been well worked over, and the miners are all gone, you stop just long enough to collect some supply's and head after there trail.

At first the horses are easy to follow but soon the earth gives way to rock and the trail ends at a stream.
As the sun starts to dip below the trees it's clear that you have no hope of following them any farther.

The next day on your way back to town you meet a fellow traveller.

He's an old man, wrinkled in his ragged robes and the dozens of heavy necklaces made of beads, bones and all shorts of trinkets.
He waves to you and begins a sales pitch.
"Ah you've... wait don't tell me, i'm Uwyn dealer of wonders in your hand and wine.
And for you dear lady today i have something special." he rummages in his necklaces.
"Ah here it is the arrow, the one an only with your name on it."
He hold an arrow head with some scratches on it in front of you.

"That's not my name" you protest but he keeps going.
"Oh but it is, in the signs .
With this you need never fear an arrow.
One silver talent for such safely is not to much to ask is it not?"
---Buy the amulet?---

Reaching the port of Mizya once again, you settle back in the tavern for the night.

During the night you stay up, drinking and listening to rumours.

A local priest is looking for guards to help transport valuable offerings to a remote site.

---------
The man sites in front of you, his hair brown matted, left eye swollen shut
"Please, champion stay a moment and hear me out will you?

It is a sad tale of war, at first they destroyed our crops, then they killed our livestock to drive us out.
We stood against then for a day but yet they still came, more wild men.

I.. i've lost it all my.. my mother.. my lover.. my everything.
I i want retribution and vengeance, blood for blood and skulls to put there spits to rest.
For that i need every fighter i can get. Hero, will you join me and help.
I can't pay much but you can have this if you swear to come."
He puts his silver neck toque on the table and holds out his hand.

Your wait in port is a short one as you soon hear of a ship leaving on the morning tide towards your destination.
It's captain, Ethelwulf 'Silver Teeth' is easy to find, he's a squat mass of bead, body hair and an impressive beer gut.
As you all discuss your journey he boast that he alone knows a shortcut, a safe passage thru some deadly rocks that he claims will save you a week of travel.

The first week is dull, you spend your time siting on deck and fishing over the side.
But the next week is not so dull, the sky turns black an thunder rumbles in the distance an the winds rises.
Soon your struggling to keep hold on to your gear as a strong gale tears at the sails and waves wash over the deck.
After the weather pass the rest of your journey is uneventful.

Finally the ship reaches, Andosteni's destination and you can begin.

You listen as Andosteni sets out his too..well you soon realice that he not a natural planner, his main two ideas are sneak in to the enermys fortress during the night or ambush them on the road.
Maybe you can come up with a better idea.

Yes you have the amulet.

"What we need is a better idea of the area, we need to know what we're facing first.
Andosteni buy us some horses while me and Soion  take look at this enemy fortress."

You part ways on foot and spend most the day walking towards the enemy fortress.
It's late in the afternoon, when you arrive at the enemy fortress as the sun starts to set.
It sat on a hill above the river valley, you approach across the ditch filled with sharp stakes and in to the walls.
You get to study the walls as Soion pay's the traders toll, there a simple earthen bank with you note a stepped row of double wooden palisades.
The gate way is simple, a wooden door with thick beams to bar it with but no portcullis or drawbridge.

Perhaps Andosteni was right, you could sneak in, the walls are low enough, with a strong hook an rope you could easily climb them.
Even the gate is weak, a good ram would easily get inside, if only you had the numbers for that...

Once inside you start to count the guards, there ten men on walls, there armed with a mix of bronze short swords, spears and hide shields.
You settle down for the night inside a large sunk in mead hall.
After a brief look around in the morning you leave, have counted the guards up to twenty.

On your return to the port, you decide to
A) Lurch  a sneak attack at night?
B) Gather as many men as Andosteni can and attack the fort head on?
C) Ambush there hunting party?

Ambush the hunting party, if we can get more information on what's inside, that would be better.

"What we need is inside knowledge and to let people know that your back, call then to arms and rid the land of this tyrant."
"Your right, we do need some better knowledge of there fort, but this ambush i have a plan for that.

we can strike here, that's the best root back from a hunt.-" Andosteni starts to point at the map.
" and your sure why?" Soion interrupts
"I know these lands, the hunt is a poor living but that the best route back from any chase ." Andosteni reminds him.
"Are you sure?, we could sneak in to the camp or try to join them on the ride?" Soion asks
"Do you see the diamond studded ring of Iffland on my fingers? or do you have the ring of gyges? No i'd be seen an killed, killed in some nasty way too.
An you two are both clearly outsiders, they'd never let you join them."

So it is that as a mist blankets the ground you lie in ambush.
Hidden behind a tree you wait, holding the rope that will drop a spiked log on the path.

Its a long wait until you can see them a trio on horse back, and a pair of youths with hounds accompanying them.

"Now!" Andosteni shout's as he jumps in the path before them
"Jaxon! it's you paid the crooked one!" he shouts drawing his sword.
On seeing him one of the youths turns and runs in to the forest.

1) Stay an fight?
2) Chase the youth before he can warn others?

You leave the youth an let them run.
The trio are the main threat and you boldly meat the blade in hand.
You first slash bites in to flesh to the bone and drops a rider, Soion strikes with you from the other side, splitting both man and beast with mighty swing.

As the riders fall Andosteni leaps on the front rider straight in to the saddle.
He wrestles with rider as the fallen horse kick wildly around you, as the fallen pony darts forwards you meet the rider as he draws his sword.

"Come on harlet! You'll pay for that!" he swings at you an it bounce off your sheild.
Returning a swing, he ducks back an his thrust makes you give him space.
The space to trip on the horse and let you carve a deep gash in pelvis, the return slash spills his belly open.
Soion's foe is rammed thru from leg to shoulder with a single cunning thrust.

Andosteni is troubled for a moment before you drive your blade thru his foes unguarded back.
His face is one of shock an dicscust as foemans bowls are splatted across him.

"but but you shouldn't of killed him,
I was going to take him prisoner send a message back.." Andosteni stutters.
"Well he dead now an this is our message, come on lets get out of here before more come" you tell him.
"More?!" he asks shocked
"One of the youths ran for it, but we have the lead." you tell him.
"Wait we can hide up there, no one will suspect that" Soion point to the tall trees above you.

You head towards
1) The river bank
2) The woods
3) Up the Trees
4) Other

Cover our group in blood and have Soion and our character play dead on the ground. Andosteni should climb into the trees, but before that let's loot our opponents and see if they have any usable ranged weaponry.

If there's none, Andosteni can pick up some rocks for projectiles. He'll be in a tree, and when the reinforcements have arrived at the scene and are surveying things with their guard down, Andosteni will throw projectiles at them. That's the signal for our character and Soion to jump up and attack.

Andosteni will climb down as quick as he can and join us in the melee, once he runs out of projectiles.

"Wait i've got one better, Andosteni you get up those trees, Soion an i we stay here.
"So left brush an right bush"
"No -you take off your cloak- we stay right here, down among the dead men.
No one looks at the dead to closely, there where we have gone, then Andosteni you can throw a spear or something at them, We jump up an take them from behind."

"Well you own me a new cloak after this, A get up there." Soion passes Andosteni a spear.
You both lie there covered in blood stained cloaks among the dead.

It's a long wait, long enough for you hate the flies that gather as you stare the hairless knuckles of the dead blacksmith.

"Shh" Andosteni warns of riders coming.

"what in the gods names is this?
YOU! go get the dogs and tell Iarlaith to bar the gates, we'll get these sons of bast --Arrk---" the spear bursts thru his belly cutting his breath short.

In an instant your up and at them, your Kopis cuts the first man's arm in half thru the elbow.
As the second one turns your hilt meets his jaw an cracks in half, knocking him to the ground.

Soion's swords cuts a wide sweeps thru ankle an knee as he fells the horse, on in a moment he kicks the rider and drags him from under the beast.

"Good bring them, leave the others." A tells you as he drops from the tree branch.

You take a brief moment to loot the valuables and bind your prisoners, now you just have to make then talk...

We should probably move them off the road before we start interrogating them, and as for interrogating them we should start by asking, then if they don't answer we should start hitting them with our fists.

It's hard to drag some one while you hold your breeches an a sword in the same hand, but your soon down in a secluded part of the forest.
the two men are lashed to a tree by Andosteni.

"Valeria keep the visor down, your the bad guard with that skull, i'll be the good one."  Soion whisperers in your ear.

"Oh you Deaglán, it's been a while but you will talk.
Meet my friends, Valeria a bit quiet but she's persuasive in her own way." Andosteni grins and you take a bow.

Then you give them both a stiff jab in to the gut.
"Now i have some questions for you.."

You start setting out your tools, a leather belt, your nail knife, some sticks, a hoofpick, a fist full of gravel , a bag of salt an then you light a small fire under your cauldron.

"Look she likes to do this, she enjoys giving you pain, -huuu- the things i've seen her do...
It was sticking what was left of them...
But look Andosteni just wants to know a few things, tell him that an we'll just leave you here." Soion stare them both in eyes as he warns them.

You begin to tie the Deaglán's hair around a stick an give it a good twist.
"Now first question..." Andosteni asks them.

It takes a half hour an you have to make it a long an unpleasant half hour but in the end Deaglán starts to sing like a bird.
You learn some interesting details about some things.

1)Fort
2)Army
3) Other

You learn about the forts structural weaknesses, that the wooded palisade is rotted to core an brittle at the back.
He also tells you that the middle watch is empty with the guards asleep.

"How does what he's told us match what you found in there?
Do you think that we could take it with thirty men?" A asks yoy

"Thirty?" you ask.
"well that's as many i think i could call to arms by midnight tomorrow.
You've been inside there now we know there walls are weak.
An there not well armed, are they?" he questions.

"No i didn't see one coat of mail or bronze cuirass among them, why? you think we can storm it?"

"Yes, well maybe which do think we should do sneak in or attack.
An if we attack which one should we try, the wall or ram the gate?"
"There maybe 20 of them if we can get the gates open then we have them

A) Sneak in at night?
B) Ram the wall?
C) Ram the gates?

"If we can... We need night pull on the cloak of darkness, get in under shadow of night with out extra strife or risk."

Andosteni spends the afternoon making offering to the bird of night, paint him self blue an offering cold cuts of meat to owls.

So under the shadows of a clouded half moon you approach the walls in darkness.
As Deaglán said there unguarded and for a monument you wish you had just rammed the gates open.
But you haven't an so you work your way thru the spikes and to walls.

As you pull your self over the wall, the half rotted wood splits with a crack and you fall in a heap as the earthen rampart covers you.
The crack echoes in the dead of night  and you still while you wait with baited breath for the alarm.

To doesn't come and you make your way in side the walls.

The guards houses are easy to see from the row of long spears outside.
Your spilt up with Andosteni dealing with the other hut while Soion stands watch.
You slowly push the door open, sword in hand.
It's a good job that you have your sword in hand as you meet a guardsman the monmet you enter.
He's unarmed and only dressed enough to go an piss but your cut him down with a slash to his bare belly.

As hear falls you hear others wake a little.
Panic grips you and your steel bites flesh in a wild rush as you hack as every man, left and right.

Your armour spatted with blood you leave the hut, an a shocked Soion meets you.
"There's not there!, Chickens in blankets!" he spews wide eyed as a bell ring in the great hall above you.
The sound of an alarm echos an you have to make a choice.

Do you run down the hill to the gate and the waiting help? or up to the hall.

1)Gate and reinforcements?
2) Hall and attack now?
