Title: The Downtown Game: Day 2: Dungeons and Drag-ons.
Post by: mastahcheese on April 10, 2017, 11:59:55 pm
The Downtown Game

What is this?
This is a RTD that I'm trying out where a group of players will be running through a downtown area while solving puzzles and fighting monsters. Mostly fighting monsters.

That said, since I'm running this from a DS, I can't track a lot of stuff, so I will need the players to keep track of their character sheets, and post them with their actions.
Otherwise, I can't do this, so if simply quoting yourself and making edits to your stats as necessary is too much hassle for you, please don't concern yourself with this.
This game will be as RP heavy as you want it to be, but it is based around working with your allies, so keep that in mind.

As for backstory, or a map, that's going to be one of your challenges. It will take place in a sprawling city, but you'll have to learn the rest on your own.

The characters you play as will be teenagers around late highschool age.

If this sounds interesting, let's begin.

Spoiler: Character Sheet (click to show/hide)

Yep, that's it. Your stats, abilities, powers, or anything else will all be decided after you enter... the downtown game.

I'm seeing a theme with the names there.

I've lowered the player requirement to 6 since this seems to have a low turnout, but I still need an even number of players for this to work.

So hopefully I get one more.

That's not a requirement, you know. :P

In any case, I have a satisfactory amount of people now, so I should hopefully be able to start this later tonight, once I take care of some other things.
Title: The Downtown Game: Day 1: Turn 0
Post by: mastahcheese on April 12, 2017, 01:35:45 am
Day 1

A day like any other. Bustling streets filled with hurried crowds, elbowing past the few strange folk that somehow seem to have found a way to stop running, and relax in the chaos around them.
And unknown to them all, a subtle change in the wind that alters the fate of six wayward souls.

Section VI
Joe Joseph opens his eyes. He's standing in the middle of a street he doesn't recognize. He's never been to this part of town before. Nobody seems to notice him.

Section VII
Donny DiBorgo steps out of the subway station and onto the sidewalk. But as he looks around, this isn't his stop. In fact, he has no idea what part of town he's in.

Section VIII
Ted Thompson looks up from his phone and finds himself in a store he doesn't recognize. It's filled with black clothing and offensive accessories. Some kind of emo store? He steps outside. Wasn't he in his home neighborhood just a second ago? The hell?

Section X
Ross Roosevelt wakes up from being face down in the street. When did he fall? As he gets up, he looks around and realizes that he must have hit his head pretty hard, because he has no clue where he is.

Section XI
Dylan Daehler sprints out of the subway station, hoping that he's not going to be late getting to his friend's house. Suddenly, he stops and turns around. This is not the stop he got off on. Definitely not. He double-checked to make sure, and he does not recognize this place.

Section XII
Lily LaBlanc slowly pulls herself out of bed to start the day, and... the covers are gone. The covers are gone, and she's laying on a bench in front of a coffee house. She blinks a few times to be sure. She doesn't even know what coffee house this is, or where the hell she wound up at.

Unknown location
"You ready for this week?"
"Oh, fuck off."
"Oh, don't be like that. We finished last week in three days and got a four day weekend. Wake up, you lazy slug."
"Ugh, fine. I remember back when we didn't do this every week, though. Like, twice a month. Hate this new guy."
"It's good for you. Besides, it'll be over before you know it."

Section VI
Joe Joseph looks around him. Nope. There is not a damn thing around here that he's familier with.
With that, he hears his cell phone go off. It's a message...

Section VII
Donny DiBorgo checks the station name. "Eastside Station".
That's it. There aren't any stops that are just called Eastside. Nothing else looks familiar. Then his cell phone goes off. There's a new message...

Section VIII
Ted Thompson looks around him. Aside from the strange store he just left, apparently called "The Goth", what a dumb name, this place looks just like every other street in town. Only, without anything recognizable.
He pulls out his phone. The apps are all odd now, and half of them are missing, but maps are still there.
When he hits it, there is indeed a map that comes up, but it's not the town map. It's like some kind of weird board game shaped like a deformed butterfly. There's a main street down the middle, with 4 sections labled 1 through 4 in roman numerals. On the east wing, there's 5 though 8, with the 5 connecting to the 2, and the 8 to the 4. The 8 is lit up. There's an identical wing on the other side, also linking at 2 and 4, and a small circle around the 1. There are 16 sections, total.
His browsing at the map is interrupted by a text...

Section X
Ross Roosevelt looks about at the street names, but he doesn't recognize a single one of them.
His cell phone goes off. There's a new text...

Section XI
Dylan Daehler walks away from the subway and whips out his phone. Huh, he can't get a signal. Weird. Looking around, nothing looks out of place.
His eyes are pulled back down to the phone as he gets a text...

Section XII
Lily LaBlanc pulls out her cell phone and tries to make a call. There's no service. In the middle of town? She tries to ask someone passing by, but they don't even glance at her.
Then she gets a message on her phone...

Section V
Roésse Radde looks up from the sidewalk to the startling realization that this isn't the road she was just on. Before she can even collect her bearings, her cell phone goes off with a new message...

Section IX
Sara Sarowski sits on a bench, reading an English dictionary to try and memorize some cool-sounding words. When she takes a break and looks up, she realizes that she's not sure where she is now. She's on some downtown street that she hasn't been through before.
Closing the book, she feels her phone vibrate. There's a new text...

I KNEW IT! I mentioned that it seemed like TWEWY in my original application, but I spent so much time away from my signup that it erased itself, and I forgot to include it in my second sign-up. You may not believe me, but it's TRUE! If I had put that, it would've been LEGENDARY!

well, maybe not legendary..

And I only ever knew about TWEWY from a passing glance at someone playing Kingdom Hearts 3D.

I forgot about the pairing-up thing, so I'm glad Elvish Miner also signed up. Also, I didn't realize the name pattern until just now. Is that a TWEWY thing? Anyway, where's the map?

"Seems like another of those dreams..though I don't remember the hand-timer. The reapers are unfamiliar, too..and the frogs are different. And is 'erasure' even a term?. So I guess this isn't like those dreams, then. Now I just need a map to Northern Heights..."

((Have to sort this by players, rather than location, since people are in motion now.

Also keep in mind that you cannot dodge and bounce in the same turn; if you put both, I'll follow whichever one you put first.))

2:54:46

Joe Joseph
Joe starts to freak out and yells. Nobody seems to hear him. He looks around, trying to find the tallest building. It's to the north-west! A frog monster leaps at him, and Joe ducks. [7+4=11. Miss] It flies right over his head.

You see another kid running towards you from the south, being tailed by more frogs.

Donny DiBorgo
Donny calls out to the crowds around him, but his voice goes unheard. The tallest skyscraper is to the north, so he starts sprinting that way. A frog leaps at him [6. Miss] Thankfully, they're pretty slow, and it hits the pavement about 5 feet behind him.

As he heads north, he sees someone else being attacked by the frogs. He's ducking and covering.

Ted Thompson
Ted runs west onto the main boulevard. It's now a straight shot north to Northern Heights, maybe a 15 minute run, if he's quick. A frog jumps out at him. [4. Hit] It leaps up, and plants its feet on Ted's shoulders before kicking with both feet, and rocketing off him like he's a springboard. Ted stumbles backwards, and hits another person that got attacked, sending them both to the ground.
-5 Health

Ross Roosevelt
Ross collects himself, and swings a foot at an incoming frog, only to watch his foot pass straight through it, as though it wasn't even there.
The frog swings a claw back at him [7. Miss] Ross pulls back instinctively, and the frog takes a small patch of cloth off his shirt from its attack.
Yeah, that's totally fair.

Some other guy is heading towards from the south, being chased ineffectively by a frog.

Dylan Daehler
Dylan starts to question his own sanity as he sprints north towards the skyscraper. [10. Miss] The frog chases after him, but it can't keep up.

He sees another guy attempt to kick a frog, and fail horribly.

Lily LaBlanc
Lily sees the skyscraper to the north, and heads east onto the main boulevard, giving her a straight shot towards it.
[4. Hit] A frog slashes her from behind as she runs, causing her to stumble forward, literally into another person that got attacked by the frogs, sending both of them to the ground.
-5 Health

Roésse Radde
Roésse wishes she had a map to Northern Heights as she runs straight forward. [7. Miss]
A frog leaps at her, and she ducks and rolls out of the way. When she looks up, she sees a tall building to the north, with the words "Northern Heights" on it, maybe 5 minutes away. Nice.

Sara Sarowski
Sara calls out for help, but everyone around her seems oblivious to her existence. A frog attacks, and she leaps to the side. [7+4=11. Miss]
She dodges easily.

Roésse Radde and Sara Sarowski
Roésse reaches out with hand towards Northern Heights, and hits a wall that undulates with blue light as it's disturbed. Figures.
"You didn't think it'd be that easy, did you? Just a little stroll through the street?"
Roésse turns around to see a woman in a jacket and long skirt, both in blazing red, standing triumphantly. Her hair is shaved on the sides of the head, leaving a crimson mohawk that hangs to one side, her whole appearance the foreground to a pair of black wings; unfeathered, and seeming not even physically attached to her.
"Let's see how you handle these~"
She raises her hand, and two more frogs appear at either side of her.

Right at that moment, Sara runs into the middle of the ordeal, and she and Roésse assume fighting poses as they form a Pact.

The frogs are thrown back, and the strange woman averts her eyes as beams of light decend upon the duo.

Opening her right hand wide, fingers slightly curved, she extended her arm and arced it toward the closest frog. She felt an ability to choose her attack (what can't be chosen in a dream, anyway?), so she chose a good way to handle enemies up-close; her hands, as claws, dicing up nearby enemies.

Why are you using the DS for this anyway? I get that that's what the game that inspirated this came from but still. I've used the DS web browser before and ugh, not a fun experience. Then again I update things on my phone, so I dunno.

Back on topic, I'm liking how this is going so far. Heheh, any plans to include people that didn't get in as mission related NPCs? Kidding of course, probably a dumb idea.

"Not exactly what I hoped for, but good enough. Now, where was I..?

Perhaps a little range will be helpful". She wants to have a balance of close and far range, but they should also help eachother in some way. Perhaps if she could slow the frogs down, maybe even stop them..some black-hole-y ball of some sort would work well. A point of vacuum should be reasonable. But it's not like her mind cares much how. So she just attempted to send some pulling sphere away from her, toward the frogs. A pillar of some might also work, likely of wind. Mini tornadoes could also work, right?

I make up new things all the time. I'll try to stick to canon psychs, but since my system works so differently, I'm not opposed to making my own.

Do Psychs have to be offensive in nature? Could you, for example, summon a bound suit of armor for yourself, give yourself wings, or restore your or another character's energy (before it hits 0)?

Exactly. Sweeper, not black hole.

Anyway, I was looking at Sara's stellar fury, and it seems to be underpowered. Its two good sides are being able to spread damage over more Noise at will, and holding back extra energy usage. However, with its low accuracy, it deals only 10 damage per turn on average compared to Shockwave's 14 for the same amount of energy...if the enemy has no defense. In TWEWY terms, it has low efficiency, since defense applies to each hit individually, making defense resist it much more. If this game had individual player strengths, I think it would sorta balance it, but no sign of that has been given so far. Also, it's energy regen is lower, taking an extra turn to regain positive attacks compared to Shockwave.

Double ninja: Athath, there are defensive/status-afflicting/healing Psyches, but only thif last one is in the original game. For everyone's reference, a list of Psyches can be found right here. (http://twewy.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Psychs) Also, both types of attacks can be used. In fact, in this system, it would be reccomended, since you would have two pools of energy available to use and regen, allowing you to use Psyches more often.
And Shadow, make a deal to help out Ross when he comes to section II next turn. You'll be able to fight off the Noise. He's your only option right now. Also, if you choose an offensive action for after the pact now, you can stop being the amphibians' punchingkicking bag.

Too tired to math, but does that calculate the +1 to accuracy for each continuous attack?

Defense powers, yes.
Movement powers, yes.
Health restoration, yes.
Energy restoration, no. I think that'd be overpowered.

Quote
Can you have both positive and negative energy, or do you have to choose one or the other?
In the video game, each individual psych had it's own power and reload, so you basically had up to 6 different ammo types.
I reduced this to 2 for simplicity's sake. Yes, you have both. It's better if you do, so one can be used while the other reloads.

Anyway, I was looking at Sara's stellar fury, and it seems to be underpowered. Its two good sides are being able to spread damage over more Noise at will, and holding back extra energy usage. The percieved low accuracy is not as bad as it seems. In the spoiler on melee and ranged attacks, I pointed out how consecutive attacks on a target raises the hit stat. Attack one has a hit of 5, but attack two gets 6, then 7, then 8, which is higher than anything else so far.
Also, if your second (or subsequent) power also doesn't take a full turn, you can start chaining different attacks together. It's not as bad as it seems. And you can always upgrade it later. Edit: Ninja'd

>.>
<.<
When we get to Day 2 I'm going to stop updating the OP for every single turn because I'm forgetful.

Quick question, when a an energy pool is diminished, does it reload at the beginning or end of my turn. like at the start of my next turn will it be at 20/50 or will 0/50 and become 20/50 after I end my turn?
I guess I should clarify that.
I'll just write an example:
First Turn: let's say you have 10/50, then you attack.
Start of Next Turn: You start with 0/50, even if you spent 20 energy.
Start of Next Turn: Energy at 20/50(reloading)  ((assuming the reload is 20))
Then two turns later, it would hit 50/50 at the start of the turn, and you could use it that turn.

Basically, Energy gets updated at the start of the turn, not the end of the turn (unless you used some of it, of course)
Which means that there will be a turn where you're at 0/50, after you empty it.

Hope that clears it up.

Ok, working on updoot.

Joe Joseph and Donny DiBorgo
Joe and Donny get familiar with each other, and start heading towards the main boulevard. If they keep up the pace, they should make it there before too long.
It feels weird to not get chased by those things, and to still have everyone in the crowds not be able to see you.
It almost doesn't feel real.

Ted Thompson and Lily LaBlanc
[2. Hit]Lily brings the scythe above her head as the glow from the light puck shines brilliantly about the blade, before bringing it crashing down on the last foe.

Frog 1 Erased! Lily gains [20x1.8=36/2=18] 18 Health. ((Holy crap))

The light puck passes from Lily to Ted at x1.6 power before dissolving as the battle resolves.

Ted and Lily gain +3% Sync Rate and 40 Yen

The scythe vanishes in a puff of smoke as the last Noise is defeated. It looks like the frogs have given up the chase, now.

Ross Roosevelt and Dylan Daehler
Ross and Dylan agree to a Pact, and as they do, a column of light decends upon them, blasting the frogs back.

Ross and Dylan gain a Sync Rate starting at 0%

The frogs ready themselves as the boys do the same.

Noise:
Frog 1: Unharmed
Frog 2: Unharmed

Roésse Radde and Sara Sarowski
[7. Hit][7. Hit]Roesse leaps at one of the last frogs, and with a quich slash, cuts it in half. She then leaps at the other as green light infuses into her hand, before unleashing it at the last one, obliterating it!

Frog 3 Erased! Frog 4 Erased!

Roésse passes the light puck to Sara at x1.4 power before it vanishes.

Roésse and Sara gain +2% Sync Rate and 80 Yen

They look around, and realize that the red-haired lady must have bounced once she realized she was in a losing fight.
They notice the two boys about 30 feet away that just formed a pact. It looks like their enemies aren't going after the girls. For that matter, no new ones are, either.

Yeah, we'll go with them dropping actual coins.
I'm not going to be doing the whole "threads" and "swag" thing that TWEWY did, instead everything is just done through Psychs, and you directly upgrade those. So your whole "inventory" is actually intangible, sans coins, which won't weigh you down.

And yeah, Energy will refill after combat. (I mean, otherwise you'd just empty them at nothing and have them reload normally)

Also, when Yen is dropped, it's a total amount, not a per-character amount. You'll have to distribute it yourselves. (It encourages teamwork! ...Or malice, both amuse me)

"Well, we MIGHT end up stealing their kills...but why not? What goes around comes around. They can keep half the yen from the battle. Let me just finish this up first.." She bent down and picked up the yen the frogs left behind. This was definitely a dream of hers if enemies went by the usual drop-money-for-no-reason-on-death trope. Then, she moved quickly and tried another vacuuming vortex, this time with less serious gestures; closing her left eye, and looking at where the other frogs were, she pinched with her right hand so that, distance ignored, it looked like she was holding the frogs/vacuum in place.

Joe Joseph and Donny DiBorgo
Joe and Donny run out into the main intersection of downtown.
They're only about 5 minutes from Northern Heights, now, but their gaze is diverted by... well.
Four kids are fighting a frog that's suspended in a vortex while it's being shot by fire and lightning.
Holy shit.

Ted Thompson and Lily LaBlanc
Ted and Lily pick up the pace as they make their way to Northern Heights.
They're running through the main boulevard now. There are shops covering either side of the street, and seeing all these people, all the bustle, without interacting with it at all.
It's eerie, to say the least.

Joe Joseph and Donny DiBorgo
Joe and Donny decide to get the hell out of this mess.
Joe runs face first into an invisible wall that illuminates with a blue wave as it's struck. Donny then reaches out to feel with his hand. It's solid.
But right as the last frog is pounded by one of the fighters back there, the wall shines brightly for a split second, and Donny tumbles forward as the wall vanishes without warning.
They pick themselves up and haul ass to the base of the skyscraper.
They place their hands on the front door, and watch as the numbers on their palms fade into nothing.
They won.

Ted Thompson and Lily LaBlanc
The two of them keep running, and soon enough they find themselves on the main intersection in town.
There's a kid stomping down a frog, with some others around the area.
But suddenly, as they run, they feel a strange sensation on their hands, and when they look, the numbers that held the timer are gone.

Ross Roosevelt and Dylan Daehler
[6. Hit]Ross jumps into the air, illuminated by a green light, and stomps on the last frog, erasing it!

Frog 2 Erased!

The light puck passes to Dylan at x1.4 power before disappearing

The frogs drop 40 Yen, and Ross and Dylan's Sync Rate increases by +2%

The light puck fades from Roésse

Sara and Roésse gain +1% Sync Rate

But despite the anti-climactic ending to the fight, they get a strange feeling, and when they look at their hands, the timers are gone.

Ross and Dylan open their eyes and look around. They're laying in the middle of the street, and they aren't in the intersection anymore. Instead, they seem to be on one of the side streets they left earlier, in front of some music place called Phat Beatsies, which is probably the second-most lame name for a music store they've ever heard.

Ted Thompson and Lily LaBlanc
Ted and Lily discard their disappointment and exchange it with hope for hot chocolate, as they enter the coffee house.
-black coffee: 20¥
-decaf coffee: 30¥
-hot chocolate: 40¥
-cappuccino: 50¥

"Oh come on, 40Y is all we have. Before we buy let me check the stats on these item"
Going with the theme of 'this being a video game' Lily tries to see if there are any stats like if it heals or what not. She look at the hot chocolate first, then the black coffee
"Quick question ted, would you be okay with splitting a hot chocolate? also if you were treating this like a video game as well, what would you hope these item bonuses would be? Personally I would love a loot enhancer or battle rate increaser but a healing item would be good I suppose."

"I'd settle for healing, unless I get some sort of weapon or ability to heal me like yours does. And the hot chocolate might be more effective, but two black coffee might help us get through more fights if we aren't hurt much in either. Guess we'll have to see what they actually do before we make a decision."

"Pretty expensive, all in all. Shouldn't there be a bargain bin or something around here? Technically speaking, they'd probably make it a bargain coffin or such. I know it's clothing, but it's probably more than that, too, y'know? Some sort of stat boost or resistance, maybe some passive ability." Look for cheaper items. Is there gum or other such small trinkets near the register? Almost stores have that. If no cheaper items are available, leave the store unless Sara won't.

Ted Thompson and Lily LaBlanc
Ted flips his phone open to check the map. Map's still there, but there aren't any markers or anything to help.
Lily decides to ask the person behind the counter, but they just shrug and give a quizzical expression.

Ross Roosevelt and Dylan Daehler
Ross inquires about the Reapers.

Dylan can't find find anything within their current budget.

Roésse Radde and Sara Sarowski
Roésse and Sara head out of the shop, and notice a strange, glowing sigil floating in the air, not too far from them. They get the eerie feeling that more monsters are nearby.
They look around for some kind of map, but there aren't any immediately in eyes' view. There's a map app on their phones that list the different sections of downtown, but none of them are labelled.

Roésse had a small idea. She knew that, whatever this distorted dungeon naturally was, or whoever owned it, it probably was currently a dungeon. So she opened her map app and said "Dungeon". Nothing happened, but then again, she was expecting it, anyway. Their goal was to fight the queen, not to steal her crown or anything.
Then, she had a legitimate idea; she'd type up Dungeon in her phone's map app, hit search, then Queen as a separate term, search again, then Dungeon Queen, and one more search. Chances are, the place may have one of those words in it's name.

Joe Joseph and Donny DiBorgo
Joe takes out his phone and opens the map app, putting "subway" into the search engine.
There's a West Subway Station in section XI, and East Subway Station in section VII. The East side would be a good 10 minute jog away.

Ted Thompson and Lily LaBlanc
Ted and Lily leave the coffee shop, and notice a floating sigil in the air that sends chills down their spines.
Ted looks around the immediate area, but this is the only building with a marking here. Everything else just carries on. His map isn't helping at all.
They keep their distance from the odd sigil and head to the main boulevard, but a blue forcefield erupts before, blocking their path. Can't go that way right now, it seems.

Ross Roosevelt and Dylan Daehler
Ross asks about the Dungeon Queen.
"You must know some really underground bands, bro. I've never heard of that."

Roésse Radde and Sara Sarowski
Roésse uses the search function on the map app.
Dungeon: nothing.
Queen: nothing.
Dungeon Queen: still nothing.
Not that blatant, apparently.

The sigil nearby starts to float slowly towards the pair.

Joe Joseph and Donny DiBorgo
Joe and Donny book it out of the cafe. The see a bizarre, floating sigil in the air that seems to watch them as they run.
They head east, and pass by some store with a tag on it called "Sound Bytes". Who named the shit in this town, anyway?
There's another sigil here, too. Not much farther to the station.

Ted Thompson and Lily LaBlanc
Ted and Lily scratch their heads at the wall, and head the other way.
They leave the coffee house behind and head up the street. They're passing the Westside Subway Station now.
There's another floating sigil here, too. Maybe they're just everywhere?

Ross Roosevelt and Dylan Daehler
Ross and Dylan listen to the chill store music. It's pretty dope.

Roésse Radde and Sara Sarowski
Roésse observes the sigil as it flashes brightly, and a pair of silver wolves pour out!
