Fall From Heaven 2 is an extensive Civilization IV Mod, set in a High Fantasy setting. The world of Erebus was a failed prototype of creation, its people trapped within it alongside a pantheon of discarded gods, all abandoned by an overgod named "The One". Severed from the heavens, the world was doomed to destruction... but luckily for all involved, this wouldn't happen for a long time!

A long time later, though, the god Mulcarn tried to halt the prophecy by putting the world in stasis, freezing it in endless Ice Age. He was defeated, however, and for the sake of Erebus the gods signed a compact to never again get directly involved in the world. What few civilizations survived the Ice Age are now attempting to rebuild and recover what was lost. Meanwhile, the absence of divine involvement, and the prophesied Fall From Heaven hints that the real Apocalypse may be yet to come...

The first step in embarking on this journey is choosing which Civilization we want to play. Each one is a small tribe of humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, or other folk that survived the Ice Age. Each civilization retains different knowledge from the world before the Ice Age, and have drastically different playstyles.

Which Tribe will we play?

Spoiler: The Clan of Embers: (click to show/hide)
An orc tribe who worship the fire goddess Bhall. They start at peace with Barbarian nations, and can convert them to their cause.

Spoiler: The Illians: (click to show/hide)
A human tribe led by a prophet of the dead god Mulcarn. Using powerful priests and rituals, they seek to make their prophet the new God of Winter.

Spoiler: The Amurites: (click to show/hide)
A tribe of humans with a strong magical background. They are the heirs of the mage who defeated Mulcarn, and seek knowledge and raw power.

Spoiler: The Grigori: (click to show/hide)
A tribe of humans who refuse to worship or fight for the gods of Erebus. They attract refugees and heroes, and incorporate other civs into their own.

Spoiler: The Luchurip: (click to show/hide)
A dwarf tribe, with a heritage of artificers and enchanters. They know the secrets of Golem making, and employ this in both industry and warfare.

Spoiler: The Svartalfar: (click to show/hide)
A ruthless tribe of elves who build hidden cities in the forests, command powers of illusion and shadow, and specialize in espionage and assassination.

Spoiler: The Bannor: (click to show/hide)
A tribe of religious warriors, sworn to a vengeful Angel. They have a strongly militarized heritage, and are bound to oppose the forces of the hells.

Spoiler: The Sheaim: (click to show/hide)
A tribe of human occultists, who seek to bring about the end of days. They command summoning magic, and bind monsters and demons to their will.

Hippus for Horselord Master Race! Destroy your enemies! Death to the list of available tribes!

After all, who can go wrong with one of the most powerful war mongering races or economical races?

A nitpick: unless Rise from Erebus significantly changed the backstory of Fall from Heaven, the Compact significantly predates the Age of Ice (in fact, the physical embodiment of the Compact, the Godslayer, was used to end the Age of Ice by killing Mulcarn). Also I vote we play as the Luchurip.

As a minor developer and a major tester of RiFE I must say that Luchuirp are not the most interesting race. You miss all magic (dwarves don't get mages or archmages) and a lot of other races' custom mechanics. Playing as Illians would be 100 times funnier. But your choice.

[~♫] (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15979669/LP%20FFH2/Cue%20Grigori.ogg) Chapter 1: The End of Winter
In which Goodreau thumbs his nose at gods and advisers alike.

In a small Grigori encampment, somewhere in Erebus...

(http://i.imgur.com/JjznQ.gif)Councilors, I come with news. Some scouts have found the site of Odio's Prison, on a bay just a few days northwest of camp.

You might recall the legend behind it... back when the long Winter was still on us, Lord Cassiel told us how Odio was a fellow angel, who fought for Aeron in the Godswar. Aeron was always a bloody god, and the same went for his servants; even after the truce put an end to their war, his angels fought on. When Kilomorph grew angery with his wayward angel, she demanded Aeron withdraw his divine protection from Odio, and abandon him to her will... which Aeron did, with little more than a second thought.

It's said Kilomorph turned Odio to stone, and left him here as a lesson to those who think to defy the will of the gods. If you asked me, it just goes to prove that no matter how much devotion we show these gods, they'll still screw us over when we need them.

With that said, councilors, I really can't think of a better monument for our people to settle by. Besides, with the weather getting warmer every day, and the ice and snow retreating, it's about time we stopped camping in the woods, and started rebuilding. What do you say?

...by the way, I hope you're about to say "Yes, Goodreau!" because I may have already given Settlers the go-ahead. Oops, minor oversight on my part.

I set the laborers to build a log palisade right now, but before they're done we'll need to figure out what to focus on next. Training more workers would help us develop the land, while training scouts and warriors will help us explore it, and make contact with other survivors. Scouts report old roads in the area too, which might mean there are city ruins from before the long Winter nearby. We might do well to explore them, but it could be dangerous... who knows what might have taken up residence there since.

Oh, and before I forget, our new capitol is going to need a name. Any ideas?

Amazing, I've just discovered FFH2 and the Sims3 (after playing my christmas binge games for about five minutes) and suddenly there's let's plays of both.

Excellent choice with the Grigori. One of my favourite civs to play too, although I am rather fond of Khazad and Amurites too. Still havn't got round to playing an evil race yet though.

Can't say I'm a fan of Rise from Erebus though. I don't like the new civs, the mechanos in particularly: Steampunk/Techpriests. Ugh. Steampunk is great, but they really could have tried harder with the ideas.

I think the capital city has to be "Twelfth Bay" really doesn't it? I also think the first priority should be getting at least 3 warriors to sit around in the capital. Barbarians are fun...

Anal retentive mode go go go:
It irritates me a little that they call the Grigori "agnostic." They are not agnostic. Agnostics neither believe nor disbelieve in higher powers, due to lack of certifiable evidence for either argument. Nor are the Grigori athiest. Athiesim is the complete rejection of deities because of personal belief that such beings are impossible. Therefore, neither term is appropriate. Why? Well, unless I've misread the bits of lore in the Civolopedia the Grigori know that gods exist without a shadow of a doubt (Cassiel is an angel, after all), but choose to reject them. A more appropriate term is needed, but I'm not aware of one. Atheism is a combination of "theism" (the belief in at least one deity) and the "a prefix" (meaning not). So perhaps Antitheist would be a far better term.
/anal retentive mode

Otherwise, good luck!

Lorgath, it's a bit tough to use our terminology to describe the Grigori, because they know without a shadow of a doubt that the gods exist (like you said) and our terms are all based around whether you believe there is a God/which one you believe in. I'd say agnostic is the closest, though, since they believe higher powers exist, they're just not willing to tie themselves to one specifically.

Anyway, religious talk aside, I'm excited to see a playthrough of this. Nice touch of humor too. :D

Depending on how much they dislike the gods, they could be misotheists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misotheism).

Can't say I'm a fan of Rise from Erebus though. I don't like the new civs, the mechanos in particularly: Steampunk/Techpriests. Ugh. Steampunk is great, but they really could have tried harder with the ideas.

All the extra races were contributed by different modders over the time, which is why they vary in quality... and why you find them all trying to outdo the other in how many core mechanics they can change, or how powerful they can make them. I generally prefer the default civs (though Sluggo is a bit of a Mechanos fanboy), but I think the Cualli/Mahuatl Lizardfolk are cool, and fit a nice niche in the mechanics and setting with the whole opposition to the apocalypse bit.

Usually, I play FFH2: Orbis, but I wanted to give Rise from Erebus a try. So far, it seems like it's a lot more polished, has better documentation, adds a lot of fun additional content (such as random events and exploration results), and there are cool ideas being represented in it. Still, the lead designer for RifE seems to have a very different design philosophy than other modders... while Orbis seems to want to preserve the whole Grimdark Fantasy feel of FFH, RifE's last update added in a race of sentient hamsters who control a nation of elves, all as an elaborate in-joke about the lead designer's avatar on the forum. Additionally, rather than treating the Hamstalfar as a fun joke race, he tries to cast them as a serious civilization, and poured a lot of thought and design time into making them playable and unique... which seems like mixed priorities to me.

So yeah, long story short, that's why I'm running a custom map with hand-picked leaders. :)

I would call Orbis more polished and Erebus to have more features. I've been through many of the latest SVN builds of RiFE so I cannot speak for the downloadable version since I haven't played it in a year or two :).

The most unique FFH2 modmod is Master of mana (http://www.masteromana.com), but it's very different from FFH2 in all aspects.

I am not a big fan of new civs too, they feel a bit out of place because the original ones are so well developed. It doesn't make them bad for me, they have a lot of love put into them, but they just can't compare to the original lore which has evolved from Kael's tabletop games.

The main flaw of Grigori is the lack of religion: there's a lot of cool religious stuff which is unique. My favourite stuff belongs to Octopus Overlords and Corruption of Spirit.

Still havn't got round to playing an evil race yet though.
Do it! It's a unique experience when you turn the world to ashes. Play some AV-compatible race and bring the world to the hell. It's really different from the common experience, and Fun! :) All those funky demons!

Boski: Brilliant, that fits perfectly as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for expanding my vocabulary!

Solifuge: Argh, the hamsters. I think they were the deciding factor for the uninstall. Mind if I ask what map you used/game rules are on? Or is that super-secret secret-plot related secret-stuff?

Deon: Of all the modmods, I've been playing MoM (hurr) the most. It's interesting to say the least. I found even more information overload when I started it up than original FF2. As far as I'm concerned that's a Good Thing, but it'll take some getting used to. Also, following your wise councel, I shall spend tomorrow being horrendously evil. Balsarephs maybe.

In other news, I'm visiting a friend this weekend, so I think I'll be introducing FF2 to people... MP game anyone?

And so, as the council adjournes, the old Grigori tribal camp disbands (adding 87 gold to the Capitol's coffers), while construction of their new Capitol begins. For many weeks do the peoples of Twelfth Bay toil, building a wooden Palisade, and training Workers to cultivate their lands.

In the meantime, the Scout continues to explore the thawing lands east of Grigori territory. Before long, he discovers an ancient Fort, rising from a mountain pass by the frozen sea! There were no survivors inside, but enough equipment was left behind to send citizens to restore the Fort, and outfit some of them as guards.

Turning north along the mountain range, and then west, the Scout eventually discovers an inhabited tribal village! The tribe seems glad to see another friendly face. As the Scout tells them of the growing Grigori settlement to the south, the villagers share reports of monsters dragging villagers off to an old city ruin to the west. As the Scout departs to investigate these ruins and look for survivors, the villagers agree to head south and join the Grigori Tribe, bringing with them a whopping 145 gold!

Departing west, the Scout comes to an overgrown trail, which was likely a major road in the days before the Age of Ice. Moving quickly along the woodland road, the Scout soon reaches the ruined city at the top of a snowy hill. Before he has a chance to explore the ruins, however, a band of Wild Lizardmen ambush him! The Lizardmen are poorly equipped and weakened by the cold, and the Scout is able to defeat them, though he suffers some minor injuries in the battle.

Spoiler: BattleLog: (click to show/hide)

Before any more Lizardmen could arrive, the Scout searches the Ruins, discovering a crude prison cell with a pale elven woman inside. Upon freeing her, the prisoner reveals herself as Aes Sidhe, Great Prophet, and former leader of a small tribe of elves. Her tribe were scattered and captured during a lizardman attack some weeks ago, by some of the very same Lizardmen the Scout had just slain.

As the sole survivor, with no sign of her Kin about, the Prophet agrees to join the Grigori, and accompanies the Scout on his way back to Twelfth Bay. Upon their return, Goodreau calls the council to session once more...

(http://i.imgur.com/JjznQ.gif) It seems the Winter is still putting a dampener on our productivity... it's been 4 months, and we're just now training our first Workers. The trouble, as I see it, is that we can't work most of the land around Twelfth Bay, until all this permafrost melts.

What's more, it seems that the dead entombed in a barrow just west of our territory are a bit less docile than I'd like. Some of the citizens are reporting skeletons wandering around the barrow. They don't seem to be able to leave the area, but I'm still concerned about sending Workers anywhere near them.

Last on the agenda, we've recently come into possession of a Great Prophet... and though I'm happy to keep her around, I can't decide what the best use of her particular talents is. As a Specialist in the Capitol she could organize healers and craftspeople, as a researcher she could teach us more of mysticism and lore, and as a Prophet, however misguided, she could build an altar that would supposedly empower our healers. Thoughts?

It seems any records of what may the Elven woman's visage may have been are erased from history.

Perhaps the Elf might be useful for building an altar to the true god, perhaps you should speak to the Luonntar about it.

Well, you obviously haven't listened to the Luonnotar teachings.

In fact, they're what you call the supreme Atheist/Misotheist order in all of Erebus, to the point which the 'Gods' don't actually bother to harm them due to their refusal to acknowledge their godhood.

Save for The One of course.

It should be noted this is only FFH2 lore/mechanics not including RifE lore/mechanics and I'm not sure exactly how different that makes it...
Fuck, we'll do it live!

Definitely Luonnotar. Considering that it's pretty much maximum grigori.
To clarify,
Quote from: http://fallfromheaven.wikia.com/wiki/Luonnotar
The Luonnotar are a group who denies that the gods are gods at all. To many this is beyond blasphemy, it is idiotic.
The Luonnotar believe only in the actual creator, who has no influence on the world but left the angels to guide the world (http://fallfromheaven.wikia.com/wiki/The_One)

[~♫] (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15979669/LP%20FFH2/Cue%20Lil%27%20Acheron.ogg) Mini-Update 1:
The Grigori stance on Gods and Religion.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(http://i.imgur.com/b6dHW.gif) Hey there, LP Fans! It's me, Lil' Acheron, the Fall From Heaven 2 lore dragon! Looks like there's been a bit of confusion about the Grigori stance on Religions and the Gods... oh no! Good thing I'm here to help clear things up for you!

The Grigori aren't a historical empire like the Bannor or Luchurip... they're made up of folks from every empire in Erebus, who got caught on the wrong side of crusaders or cultists, and felt betrayed by their gods. One way or another, these folks found their way to an Angel named Cassiel, who took them under his wings... all in all, he's a pretty swell guy! Not only did he help them start over again, but he sheltered them from the wars of the gods, and even convinced the gods to sign a compact that keeps them from directly messing around with Erebus, and the worshipers of other gods.

You see, Cassiel's followers don't just go around hating gods, or the people who worship them. In fact, there's a god that most of them respect, and even revere! This god doesn't have a name, but some call him "the One" or "the Overgod". Either way, Cassiel taught the Grigori that this god is the one who made all the other gods of Erebus. Even though the other gods have power, they still have to answer to the One.

There's even a special cult who worship this Overgod. They're called the Luonnotar, and they go so far as to say that all the other gods aren't even gods at all, but just really powerful Angels, no different than Cassiel! To them, the other gods are like kids arguing and fighting on a playground, but that playground is Erebus! The Luonnotar say that mortals are better off not getting involved with these up-jumped angels and their fights, and should instead work on getting back in touch with their real god!

Well, there you have it, gang. I hope that was educational, and not too boring! And remember, if you ever have trouble with Lore again, I'll be sure to burn you alive, along with all that you love and cherish. Bye bye!

Okay, factoring in my vote, we're at a 3 way tie, with 3 votes for each. This is so square, it's cubed. Tiebreaker Powers Activate!

Each decision has pros and cons:
- Having her join the city would help us grow a lot in the long-run, but it would bias us toward getting more Great Prophets.
- Building the Altar would help our culture, and empower any Luonnotar (or Druids) who join us, but is of little use otherwise.
- Researching a Tech would get us to spellcasting quicker, but once the ice melts we could probably do the same research in 5 turns.

In the end, the council agrees that their forces are not yet strong enough to battle the undead. Instead, they keep their newly trained team of Workers at a safe distance, and turn their attention south of Twelfth Bay, where warmer temperatures have revealed a sprawl of ruins three times larger than the one where the Prophet had been rescued. This time, lest they encounter more danger, both the Scout and Warrior leave to explore the ruins together.

At a distance, they hear the sounds of battle, which end as they draw closer. When they enter the ruins, they find a curious sight; an armored warrior and an angel, performing funeral rites for several long-dead bodies. After introductions are made, the two reveal themselves as travelers who had come to the ruins seeking shelter, but found only walking corpses. Upon hearing of Twelfth Bay's similar problems with undead, the travelers agree to help them, in exchange for their help burying and consecrating the dead here. As they turn to leave, a particularly grateful spirit trails after the Scout, whispering its thanks, and promising to guide and protect him as it can.

The angel seldom speaks as they travel to the barrow, ignoring questions about what brought him down to Erebus, and the life of an adventurer. His companion is less shy, and names himself a Dragon Slayer; though he doesn't claim to have done any actual dragon-slaying, he explains that the title means "Professional Monster Hunter". He happily shares tales of battles with all manner of exotic beasts, from direwolves and ogres to griffons and undead... though he similarly avoids questions about his homeland.

As they draw closer to Twelfth Bay, the Angel pauses, and explains that he senses the presence of evil in the woods to the north. He claims that demonic spirits will be drawn to the echoes of pain and rage from Odio's Prison, and that they should remain vigilant. The Dragon Slayer offers to deal with the barrow, while the others turn north to investigate the woods.

With the barrow brought to rest, and the threat ended for now, the Angel thanks the Grigori for their assistance in the fight against evil, and he and his companion decide to join their cause. The Angel vows to remain behind, and protect their fledgling settlement against harm, while the other three turn east, to explore the land beyond the mountain range.

Alternatively, Generator. And it's the main reason I haven't played more than about 40 turns in FfH2 so far... that and the much larger barbarian/barbarian equivalent numbers much earlier. Glad to see you playing safer than I did Soli. :P

Edit: oh, for an angel name I was trying to think of something, but all I could think of were the really well known ones. Then I realized a lot of them end in ael, so why not Ael? Pronounced like Ale, it's a bit funny. Not a great suggestion, but it's a name.

[~♫] (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15979669/LP%20FFH2/Cue%20Svartalfar.ogg) Chapter 4: Of Elves and Dwarves
In which the Svartalfar Queen makes introductions, and diplomacy is broached.

Following his adventures at the barrow, Geordan the Dragon Slayer spends a few days resting in 12th Bay. While there, a wagon rolls into town from the north, driven by a travelling enchanter and his companions. The enchanter sets up shop in the center of town, offering to sell his wares. With the loot he'd pillaged from the barrow, Geordan buys an enchanted sword that will never lose its edge, a blessed shield bearing the holy symbol of Dagda, and a magical salve that can heal any wound. After that, the adventurer departs from 12th Bay heading east, to meet up with the others.

Meanwhile the Scout, having grown tired of waiting for the others, decides to quest off alone. He leaves the fort heading east, but by the time Geordan and the Warrior reach the fort, no word of him has been heard. They search for him up and down the coast for weeks to no avail, until they find a new fortress dominating a land-bridge at the east edge of the mountains, flying a silver flag with a black crescent moon. As they approach, a dark-haired elven woman emerges from the fort's main gate, flanked by several guards.

Spoiler: DiplomacyLog (click to show/hide)

Sure enough, the Scout is found within, recovered from his wounds and ready to travel. Geordan thanks the Svartalfar on behalf of the Grigori people, and the three depart the Elven Fort. The Scout guides them west to a pass in the mountains, leading to a hidden valley filled with old ruins and a forest of giant mushrooms. It is here, he explains, that he met a warband of Dwarves made clanless during the long Winter, doing battle with Lizardmen who had taken up residence in one of their ancestral halls. He had fought alongside the Dwarves, but they had been routed and fled the ruins, before the Scout took his injury.

When they reach the ruins themselves, they find two dwarven warriors encamped under a copse of towering tree-sized mushrooms. They greet the Scout and his companions, and name themselves Biggs and Wedge. As the Scout relates his experience to the Dwarves, they tell how their band rallied and drove the last of the Lizardmen from the ruins, but took heavy losses... for all they know, they're the last survivors. To make matters worse, the ruins they fought to liberate proved to be flooded and completely inhospitable. Lacking for home and kin, but encouraged by the Grigori band's tales of blood and glory, the Dwarven duo offers to join them.

Before departing, the band makes one final sweep of the ruins. Within its depths, they find no survivors, and nothing of value... only sunken tunnels filled with fetid black water, and the corpses of Dwarves and Lizardmen. As they turn to leave, however, a rhythmic, wet slapping sound fills the hollow tunnels, accompanied by the smell of rotten fish. Soon, a group of discolored, waterlogged corpses stagger down the hallway, and toward them!

Spoiler: BattleLog: (click to show/hide)

Meanwhile, back in 12th Bay...

Warmer weather has been settling in. The once snow-covered forests grow thick with underbrush and vines, and the frozen plains thaw into damp, misty wetlands. The terrain seems to be resolving itself into a temperate rainforest. With the threat from the barrows gone, the first of the hunting camps is finally completed! Workers busy themselves expanding roads and trails to the camp, while some newly-outfitted Grigori Warriors guard them. The Angel, who names himself Auriel, stands vigil day and night over the growing town.

During one night, a wise woman among the Grigori reports that "The Bear", a constellation sacred to Mulcarn, has moved into prominence. Though it may mean nothing following the Ice God's death, she fears that it may signal a fierce new winter to come. During the next day, despite the warmth of the last few months, a cold and raging wind blows in from the north. With it comes the first snowstorm in many months. Between the mournful howls of the wind among the trees, some villagers report hearing a soft chittering not unlike laughter, while others share tales of childlike silhouettes dancing about in the snowfall.

Thankfully, the storm begins to clear in a few days time and the snow melts once more, though the guards are unable to find any further sign of the reported creatures. After the storm abates, Goodreau calls the council into session, in the newly-built Grigori Palace.

(http://i.imgur.com/JjznQ.gif) Councilors, we have much to discuss! Well, just two important things, really. Reports from our explorers claim they have made contact with another Svartalfar Tribe, this one led by a woman naming herself the Queen of the Elves. Little is known about them, beyond that they hold a fort at the eastern edge of the mountains. Additionally, our very own guardian Angel has informed me that he still senses the presence of evil growing in the north... which may be the source of our restless corpse problems. Should we commit our explorers to learning more of this Elf Queen, or investigate the source of the undead in our lands?

In other news, I'm led to believe that our Research and Development committee are almost finished developing their fishing boats. We have a few options for where to focus our research next, including construction and ore-mining, better agricultural and herding techniques, or research into ancient occult practices and magic. The first would help build our industry and may reveal some mineral resources nearby, while the second will help us to grow and feed our population. The third looks to be a waste of time if you ask me... but they assure me that given enough time it may yield fruit.

So, given that... discuss!

While I'd prefer [3], breaking the game in unexpected ways sounds very... dwarfy. If the game is likely to break in hilarious ways, go with [2]. Otherwise [3].

If it was me playing? 3, absolutely.

But I don't mind sticking with the current system. I don't know what I'm missing so it doesn't bother me in the least that we're a bit slow. And since it's you playing and giving us the condensed updates, it's not like us viewers are going to suffer the snailpace as much. On the other hand, breaking games is fun.

If you're going to tally, count me in with #3, but know that I don't really care which way this LP goes, as long as it goes.

I vote for #1, as long games are fun games and so far the turns have been exciting enough. If things take longer then just take longer turns.

[~♫] (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15979669/LP%20FFH2/Cue%20Barrow.ogg) Chapter 5: Who're you gonna call?
In which the Grigori have 99 problems, but a Lich ain't one.

Turning their attention to the undead problem, the adventuring party head toward a pass at the north end of the valley. A bear threatens the pass, and the Scout takes the opportunity to wrestle with him.

Spoiler: BattleLog: (click to show/hide)

Emerging from the valley, the party searches the land for the likely source of their undead problem. Before long, Geordan and the others stumble upon a curious hillside barrow. Old boulders smoothed by time, and carved with curious runes dot the ground, along with large blue crystals that seem to shine with their own light. So transfixed are they all that the hail of arrows buzzing through the air go unnoticed, until they begin to rain down among them! While the others move to take cover, Geordan takes an arrow to the knee, but storms the hill undeterred to where a band of Skeletal Archers are fortified.

Spoiler: BattleLog: (click to show/hide)

From the top of the hill, the party survey the area for other lairs. Biggs and Wedge head Northwest to investigate an old fortress, while Geordan, the Scout, and the Warrior stay behind to explore the Barrows.

The tunnels leading into the barrow hill are cold and damp, the interior only faintly lit by the same strange crystals found on the surface. The Scout wades through a pool of black water to cross to a deeper part of the barrows... and cries out in pain as something sharp pierces into his foot! He and the others return to the surface and inspect the wound. The cut is jagged, and a burning rash of skin far darker than a bruise should be has begun to spread from it. Fearing infection or poison, he tries to clean the wound and apply a tourniquet, but the rash continues to spread.

By the next morning the Scout has grown very ill, and elects to stay in camp while the others delve deeper. They take care when crossing the flooded passage, and eventually reach a gloomy stairway that leads deeper into the Barrow. After their descent, the tunnels wind to a curious crystal-lined archway, with a wide, glowing vault beyond it. Crystals line every wall of the vault, and seem to hum and glow brighter as they approach the archway. The air begins to crackle with static, as a shimmering ball of light gathers under the archway before them. Curious, the Warrior reaches out to it, but before Geordan can move to stop him the ball expands into a bright rift, which swallows him up and disappears with a snap, followed by a tremendous rumbling. Seeing no sign of him below, Geordan hurries to the surface only to find the Scout with his back to the wall, feebly shouting about an attack. A horde of waterlogged Zombies emerge, swollen and dripping from barrows all around their camp, and shamble up the hill. Geordan draws his blade and shield, and stands to face them alone.

Meanwhile, Biggs and Wedge take some time to fully explore the Fort. They find a treasure horde, no doubt pillaged from the nearby city ruins, containing 136 gold worth of loot! After much celebration, and bagging everything they can carry, they find a locked room. Making short work of the wooden door, they find a room with a partially collapsed floor, leading down into an underground passageway. The tunnel walls are lined with burial alcoves; it appears to be an old catacomb, perhaps connected to the nearby barrow. Halfway through their exploration, a thunderous sound rumbles down the passage, followed by a strange tingling in the air. As the Dwarves turn to flee the tunnel, the bones of those buried in the catacomb walls shamble to their feet, clutching rusted swords!

Spoiler: BattleLog: Fort Fight (click to show/hide)

After the battle ends the Dwarves rejoin the others at the Barrow, and learn of the Warrior's disappearance. Taking him for dead, they raise a toast in honor of the fallen, and return once more to the Barrow. Winding their way back down to the massive crystal vault, the Dwarves and Geordan find a sealed stone doorway carved with the symbol of Arawn at the far end. As they approach the door, a rumbling roar is heard, followed by a flash of firey light scattered among the crystals on the wall. A massive Red Drake uncoils itself from the base of a crystal and attacks, pursuing them to the surface, while breathing fire and ash!

Burned, but not deterred, Geordan, Biggs, and Wedge return to the Barrow one last time, approaching the sealed door in the far side of the crystal chamber. The door slides into the ground at their approach, revealing a dark chamber wherein a robed figure stands before an Altar to Arawn, God of Death. When the figure turns toward them, its eyes resolve themselves into glowing pits, its features tightly drawn and corpselike.

Intoning ancient necromantic spells, the Lich summons three skeletons forth to attack the party, before conjuring a ball of blue flames into a withered hand. The weakened and wounded adventurers join in a last desperate battle against them!

Spoiler: BattleLog: Lich Fight (click to show/hide)

With the Lich and his minions destroyed, and the threat of undead ended for now, the weary heroes make their journey back to 12th Bay. Geordan and his companions share tales of their harrowing adventures, with the newly-confirmed Dragonslayer taking most of the fame for himself. Though they mourn the loss of one of their brave Warriors, the people name Geordan the champion of the Grigori, and celebrate their victory over the undead!

(http://i.imgur.com/JjznQ.gif) I think everyone will be able to rest easier now that the dead are back to being dead. With that resolved, I thought it was time to turn our attentions to some domestic matters. Recent breakthroughs in mining technology have revealed both Gold and Copper ore deposits near 12th Bay, as well as Gem deposits on the coast to the East. All in all, this is great news!

Also, it's been more than a year since we first settled 12th Bay, and with refugees coming in from all corners as the world thaws, the town has grown about as large as local food can support. I think it's time we considered founding a few new settlements. New settlements will expand our cultural borders, and give us access to new resources... but we need to be sure there is enough land around them to develop, enough food and materials for them to grow, and settle strategically strong locations, in the event that the Svartalfar or someone else sees fit to attack us.

There are a few locations I've been considering nearby, each with different benefits and risks. We will probably be able to settle 2 or so before the rest of the ice melts, so you don't have to just pick 1 area. Also, if any of you have other ideas I'd be happy to hear them as well, but for your consideration...

Settling the Bay's Mouth:
- Pros: A well-protected area that provides fish and coastal trade, for easy food and commerce.
- Cons: It lacks much land to develop, weakening potential production, and may compete with 12th Bay for land.

Settling the Coastal City Ruins:
- Pros: Provides wild pigs and deer, and has both ocean access and land to develop.
- Cons: Lack of fresh water and deeply frozen terrain makes agriculture harder.

Settling the Woods:
- Pros: Provides spices and salt, and lots of land with a river, hills, and forests for decent food and production potential.
- Cons: It lacks ocean access, and it's distance from 12th Bay makes it harder to defend.

Settling near or on the Old Fortress:
- Pros: Strategically strong location, with plenty of food and ocean access.
- Cons: Only provides copper ore if crowded close to 12th Bay. Otherwise, it replaces the Fort.

Settling the Valley:
- Pros: Well-defended location providing Mushrooms, Gems, and Deer, and ocean access if built south of the mountains.
- Cons: Close proximity to the Svartalfar Fort, with limited land to develop due to mountains and ocean.

I vote wherever we decide to settle, we name it as if it is one of the other potential spots. ex: The Twice-lived City for the bay settlement.

I think we should leave the fort as is, as it's a very good strategic location for a fort. Place the city on the opposite coast or by the woods.

Cool lich. Settle the fort to protect our eastern border. Secondary expansion site will be the woods up north.

Will building the city in the fort completely destroy it? I haven't played any Civ games. The area around the fort is a nice place to settle, but the fort should be preserved for defense. The woods also looks like a nice place to expand, but you don't want to over-extend.

I think you should settle around the fort first. Settle the woods when both of your towns are better established, and settle the ruined city once it's soil thaws so that you may better defend the woods settlement.

How good is the fort anyway? Is it's bonus better then a city with walls.

Usually a fort upgraded to citadel is better than a common city. An advanced city with walls, castle and other improvements may be better, but I think that promotons to +% attack against city do not get work against forts, so the forts are better in the end.

Settle the Coastal City Ruins and the Valley, and then go for the Woods. The city ruins gives us two more food resources and the valley lets us keep those nasty elves from expanding to far towards our capital. Once you have ocean access and an eye on the elves the woods look like a good place for a longer term settlement.

You're incorrect on that last count.

It is, last time I checked, most vital to secure as much land as possible from enemies in Civ and by extension FfH. So if the Svart are to the east, grab dat land, settle between gems and deer. 1SW of the fortress looks like a good spot too - copper's a nice tile to work - as does the city ruins spot or 1E of it. There's no food at the woods area, so it's a really bad spot currently. Bay's Mouth is a good spot, but not for now. Nobody is going to contest you for that area, so first claim the unclaimed land and then fill in the holes.

I'd like a screenshot of the northern area. It's going to be the prime expansion zone in the long run.

Caveat: not specifically familiar with Fall from Heaven 2. Very familiar with Civ 4.

I agree with Errol. You want to grab that spot before your elf neighbors do. I would settle right on the fort because, if you get to chain irrigate later on, you should be pretty well set for food on that site.

Then settle the city ruins, I think.

Take bay mouth or city ruins. For now, you need to expand quickly, and both these places will have plenty of food, especially with Fishing and Hunting researched. They aren't great, but they should grow at least to this 5-6, when you can switch it to produce settlers. Both also seem quite secure.

So, uh, what does "plagued" do on the scout? Is it just a stat decrease? Will he die/Will it spread? Can we do anything about it? He seems to be a pretty kickass scout, so I'm pulling for him. :P Also, what happened to the Warrior? "Telefragged" makes it sound like he was teleported to an uninhabitable tile I guess, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with what's possible in FfH.

I vote City Ruins and the valley near the Svartalfar for settlements.

Post by: Solifuge on January 30, 2012, 04:25:07 pm
"Plagued" makes units about 1/3 as strong, and drastically slows their recovery rate from wounds. It may be spread to foes by combat like Diseased does, but I don't think it passes to units in the same tile. As for what can be done about it, we could research down the Medicine tech tree and learn how to treat it, or hope to find a cure somewhere in the world.

As for the Warrior, he was swallowed by a portal as an exploration result and disappeared. I don't know what happened to him after that, but as far as I know he has ceased to be. I'm going to pretend he just got plane-shifted to Valhalla or something.

FYI, I put tooltips on all of the abilities/equipments/buffs and debuffs listed under each unit's summary (they pop up when you roll the mouse over each entry). It describes the in-game effects and powers of each unit.

Okay, so get this... I just tried out the Master of Magic mod for FFH2, and it is crazy-good. It's very fun to play, well-streamlined, and adds in some huge improvements to the AI. Also, as opposed to the others, it's still in active development; the last patch was released a week ago, and non-save-breaking bugfixes are still being released. They added a separate system for spell research and ritual casting, the unit promotion system got a pretty significant streamlining/overhaul, and the game now models the gathering and stockpiling of material goods like stone, wood, mana, etc. to provide equipment to your troops, cast spells, etc. Long story short, it looks significantly more fun and better-designed than the mod I'm running right now, and I'd like to try it out.

Given the whole slow speed issue, and given how we had a majority of votes to just start a new match, would you guys hate it if we just started a new match using the new mod? Honest answers, one way or the other; I can play it on my own time and keep using Rise from Erebus for this LP, but I did want to run it by you guys who've been sticking around so far.

Don't get me wrong; I'd absolutely love to play an epic-scale game as a play-by-email on a really large map, with 9+ other human players. For an LP, where I spend about 2-4 times as long doing the write-ups as I spend playing the game, though, an Epic-Scale game represents a pretty significant investment of my free time.
