Getting corpses out of the river...
« on: October 12, 2018, 04:27:14 am »

Had someone die in the river (it's not the first time).
I already had to make slab for them.

Is there a way to get the body out of the river? (It's bothering me ;))

Multiple bodies in the river...Might as well install map edge drain on the river. (You can dig downstairs while standing on a bridge 1z above). Or a line of pumps.

Single body, if it is not flush against map edge you could place coins stockpile on it and dig a ramp underneath to retrieve the items on the tile without flooding.

Does it specifically have to be a coin stockpile? That unnerves me.

Nope, any building will work. I just use coin stockpile due coins being rarely produced, and if produced either locked in vault or traded away.

It's possible to define stockpiles that don't accept anything at all. That's useful if you don't actually want a stockpile but a side effect of it, such as e.g. suppressing tree maturation.

Do stockpiles prevent liquids from flowing vertically through them?

Nah. Buildings just prevent the floor under them from being mined away.

I mostly use this to get wagon goods underground quickly.

This is one of the few times I just use DFhack autodump to retrieve the body.

Maybe one day logs and bodies will float on water.

Lots of pumps.  You're lucky it's in the river, not an aquifer, or it'd be almost impossible.

Another way, if you have it, would be lava.

I've been thinking about it and I still don't understand what you said. If the floor is not mined away, how does the item fall through?

It goes through the floor. I presume due of a fix to make miners not kill themselves with falling boulders when digging ramps.

If you want something less exploit-y than the stockpile trick, it's not too hard to have a miner retrieve it safely. Just build on consecutive tiles:
1) a normal door, 2) another normal door, 3) a floor grate leading down to a drain or reservoir, 4) a lever-controlled door, and then 5) a ramp up under the object to be retrieved. The miner walks over the floor grate and through the doors back to safety. The water carries the object onto the grate. Pull the lever and retrieve your item.
