Hmm... These are both very good points. I suppose you are right, although I still feel the community is quite small for a game this good.
So there's a larger DF community than I think, but it is sepparated across forums?

I know three people who play but don't use forums and two who play but only lurk.
Makes sense. However, I also wanted to say that this is one of the few places in the internet without trolls.
Makes sense. However, I also wanted to say that this is one of the few places in the internet without trolls. Not really. It just means no one's ever noticed. Bring out the witch-hunting pitchforks. Plus we do occasionally get attention-seekers and shock spammers.
The Internet. The internet, a place of hate and porn, individuality and amorality. Now a place of advertising and misinformation, #YOLO and surveillance.
Once a place of knowledge and trust, of giving and peace.
Now it is corrupted by trolls, spam, spam-bots, flame-wars, and more.Since the dawn of time. The only difference now? The internet corp. giants seek to plaster full names on every bit of information, every bit of information about those names forever known. Coming last summer: Your life story, brought to the internet by the internet.
Above this cliff, there is a bloody mess of corpses, magma, dementia and experiments. This is Bay12. This is the sanctuary. How would you even know? Flame wars, derails, trolls, bored children, black hats and screamers - are sometimes indistinguishable from the fanatic enthusiasm of this community! One only has to bring up katanas, core beliefs or politics to invite universal shitstorm.
The Cliff keeps out the flame-wars, the trolls, the bored children, the ragers. It holds black hats away, in fear of It.
Also, the community seems to be slowly fading. It's been growing. Average amount of registrations a day: 45.11
We need to find a way to attract people without calling trolls in.Not really. It's quite niche in its own right and the only active attempt to attract people from forumites here I remember resulted hilariously in an influx of shock spammers. As others have said, the people who are interested in it will find it from the various youtube videos, tvtropes, news articles, blogs, articles from websites with larger traffic like cracked or lebbit, traditional/general game boards, subforums and stories, all spread about passively.
Seriously, katanas suck.
What about a halberd? I mean, you get the pointy end of a spear, plus a giant axe head on a stick. Sure, up close it is absolutely useless, but you have to let them get that close.
Considering the fact that you're holding a gigantic spear-headed axe on a stick, that isn't likely.
The extra weight is a liability unless you're on top of a wall where you have the convenience of lopping off, well, anything that comes into reach.
What about a halberd? I mean, you get the pointy end of a spear, plus a giant axe head on a stick. Sure, up close it is absolutely useless, but you have to let them get that close.Eh what? Halberds would rarely ever get longer than 2 meters. You could proficiently take down any close threats that aren't so close they're in your face. You mean pikes? Those were the incredibly long spears. Halberds have all the benefits of a two handed axe with the extra benefits of a versatile axe head to fend off heavy infantry, and hopefully cavalry too. The only weapon that'd give the halberd a run for its usefulness would probably be the bastard sword I'd reckon. Most all other weapons, including most kinds of swords, to get so close to a halberdier as to make a halberd useless would render their own weapon useless too. You'd still be facing someone with a staff and a hook, and both would probably just pull out their knives and begin stabbing each other in the face at that point anyways. Barely even close to being useless.
Considering the fact that you're holding a gigantic spear-headed axe on a stick, that isn't likely.

Bay 12, sanctuary of the internet, home of the derail.Apparently we've regressed in weapon technology back to bashing two rocks together to create a nuclear fission chain reaction.
My pointed stick could beat up your pointed stick.
I would rather see a knight and a samurai face off against a norse berserker and a celt warrior.why not add a spartan?
If you were going to do that I would have to insist on adding a roman legionnary as well.I would rather see a knight and a samurai face off against a norse berserker and a celt warrior.why not add a spartan?

Might as well call some amer-indians.

i have always wanted to see a European knight fight a samurai..Samurai would have used naginata, bow or spear not katana, katanas were crappy cheap sidearms. Knight would still win, but the distinction is warranted.
granted the knight would win in the 1st charge but the internet flame war would be hilarious
seriously light Armour plus katana plus on foot doesn't beat heavy Armour (still maneuverable) plus lance and heavy sword plus War Horse.
plus knights dont do sissy crap like calligraphyYOU SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH UNCOUTH YEOMAN, WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF THE BOOKS?
Meh. Now a whole unit of Spartans, that would be interesting.I would rather see a knight and a samurai face off against a norse berserker and a celt warrior.why not add a spartan?
I don't think the Greeks ever went up against the Celts or Norse. I think their military tactics would be quite effective against the Greeks.True.
I'm fairly sure that Greeks win by default. See: 2000 years of Greece kicking everybody else's ass, the losing once to the Romans.Alexander pls
However, the greeks had military cunning. They brought down sparta, which was like over 9,000 times bigger than greece.THEBES PLZ

In fact, there was no such thing as Greece back then!Well, there was a rough draft of Greece. As in, an organization in the place where the Hellenic Republic would one day be.
HAHAHAHA, oh you. Sparta was a part of Greece.
Or just pierce their mail with bone bolts or jam the skul through brain with a kick to head.History would be more interesting if this was an accepted set of tactics. Unfortunately, most humans do not have the Beard Power to kill people by kicking them in the face.
What I would love is a halberd that is just a bit shorter, and instead of having a sharp thing on the back, make it have a flat surface.
With a heavy enough materialm (iron?) you can have an axe, spear, and warhammer (the flat back) in one weapon.
I still prefer dual-wield hatchets however.
I'm partial to pistols, myself.I second this. A nice high caliber pistol is the way to inflict damage with class.
... What? Pistols are cool by themselves.
Yeah, this topic is completely derailed. I guess we need to get better...Katanas? What Katanas?
*sunglasses*
Training.
Jahwol!Nonsense, the buttterfly knife can hold it's own in combat. Assuming you are good at sneaking about and stabbing.Like the spy from tf2? He is in a war scenario, after all.
I forget, what's the difference between a zweihander, a claymore and a greatsword? The greatsword is a big two-handed sword. The zweihander is a German version of the greatsword, which works better because of German Engineering. The claymore is a kind of American-made explosive used to mine gold in the forties.
No, a claymore is a kind of big-ass sword. I think the scottish used it...
if we are going weapons of mass destruction i give you*sees something to do with Dr. Who*

No love for orbital death rays?I preffer relativistic weapons. Cats launched at 10% the speed of light, anyone?
As far as I know, sometimes the blade had certain points where it wasn't sharpened on purpose, so that you could grab it from that place and and use it to hit with the handle (for armored enemies), or for more precise stabbing strikes.I forget, what's the difference between a zweihander, a claymore and a greatsword? The zweihander is a German version of the greatsword, which works better because of German Engineering.

How depressing, now I have nowhere to put my interesting pictures I saved from the internet.Put them here! After all, this thread could use a lot more de-railing.
No, we have sails. The thread goes in the direction of where the discussion blows, but it turns on a whim and will not remain on one topic forever.

speaking of sails what sail do you like the most
i prefer the genoa for the mere fact it's the maximum sail per sail you can get without being ridiculous
Oar you guys really making ship puns now? Fine, whatever floats your boat. And you fancy yourself galleont enough to not join in?
