Title: Yet another fort lost to SGCS* Syndrome...
Post by: Batta on June 24, 2009, 12:42:15 am
*Sudden Giant Cave Spider

Or not. As it turns out, out of the four dwarves I tried to save, only one survived. He and another miner were to dig out the entrance, then seal themselves off by removing the staircases leading down into the fortress. Only one was inside the fortress when it was closed off; the other wandered outside to go put a barrel of booze into a stockpile I forgot to get rid of. The other two had their own methods of protecting themselves that never finished (building a wall around himself) or even started (building a platform into a bottomless crevice, then removing a platform so the spider couldn't reach her).

So now it's Autumn, with that one dwarf doing his best to make it in his little cave, when the caravan and liasion arrive! I watch in horror as they get devoured by this dwarf killing machine... is what I would say if it seemed even slightly interested in them.

What's up with that? So they're unstoppable dwarf hunting machines when it's my own group, but they just ignore everything else if it's not within ten feet of them?

EDIT: Migrants have arrived! The GCS (Soakspurned the Pristine Tower, for anyone wondering what it's called now) doesn't seem to be going after them, either. I may actually be able to save these guys. Should I, or should I continue my one-dwarf colony and see how long he lasts?

Your fortress now has one purpose. Eliminate the evil dwarf eating machine!

I had a GCS in my hermit fort.
I sent wave after wave of foolish migrants stationed near it. One of them on-hit-killed it.  >:(
So now I starve them to death.

As you can read above, killing/trapping a GCS is either a matter of well-trained dorfs, or pure luck.

Hermit challenge: Turn off immigration and attempt to train your hermit enough to defeat the GCS!

Giant cave spiders are way to dangerous. Someone needs to make them tougher.

Also, Cerapa, I LOVE your avy!

This reminds me, can creatures with no endoskeleton be skeletal?

They just won't look much different.

well they would be more white instead of blackish as i believe GCS's are and like any other effects another skeleton has.

Actually, many cave animals lack pigmentation(see olms, cave fish, etc)...so the only difference would be that the eyes had nothing behind them. If it had hair, that might be gone-I actually image then alternately as a kind of brown recluse-black widow look, closer to a BW, or as almost being like a tarantula version of a balck widow, with a larger cephalothorax. And someone has gotten both zombie AND skeletal GCS on the same map! If you do a search for skeletal GCS/skeletal giant cave spider you should find it.

I have seen skeletal antmen before, so no prob with skeletal GCS.

Unfortunately, I went and let them in, mostly because it was taking forever to get stuff hauled.

That said, it's only around 7 or 9 newcomers, so I'll probably have them attack the GCS to get rid of them and re-isolate my one miner.

Don't think I'll ever be able to capture it, though. That thing moves around way too much.

Actually, to do that I use a bait dwarf. Stationed far enough back behind a cage trap that he won't go towrds the GCS, but not so far back that the GCS doesn't see him. Works like a charm for GCS and other large carnivores. Skeletal stuff too.
