Title: The All Guardsmen Party
Post by: Bomepie on December 18, 2014, 09:19:27 am
Hi folks, I've wandered onto this forum to share a story about bravery, incompetence, and the excessive use of detpacks.

This is at heart a write-up of an Only War and Dark Heresy campaign, but only briefly touches on the mechanics in the first two chapters and it shouldn't be a problem if you do not like or play either game. Be aware that this thing gets rather long in the later chapters and there is a significant tone shift after the prologue. Sorry about that, the story has been continuing for a while now and I lack any sort of editor.

The Adventures of the All Guardsmen Party

As a quick fore-word, I'm splitting these into chapters embedded into this forum, but everything is available in the main archive here:
http://www.theallguardsmenparty.com/ (http://www.theallguardsmenparty.com/)

For laziness reasons I'm no longer keeping this list of image links up to date, you can find all of the latest chapters here:

Oh hey, the All Guardsmen Party!
I read a couple of episodes of this when I stumbled upon it a while ago, it's great stuff.
Thanks for writing it up/sharing it, and for posting it here. Should be a bit easier for me to (remember to) read it all, now. :)

Eh, reading's not so bad.
So, do you play the campaign in person, or is it an online game? How did you amazing lunatics come to be in the same campaign? Just how many drugs did your GM take to come up with the weird shit in Discount Spaceship? How long have you been playing all up?

This is amazingly good shit. I've only read up to Part 5. Loved the Box. Would read more but I've been reading for something like 2 or 3 hours, it's 2 AM, and I should get some sleep. Probably.

The game should still be going because as far as I can tell the last post in Chapter 8. was only a month ago.

Tyrannnnids. Maybe.

Thus far we've seen Chaos, Tau, Sisters of Battle, Necrons and a bit of the Space Marines. I'm probably missing some stuff.

Another excellent chapter though. Very enjoyable to read.

New chapter is up and it's a stupidly long one this time.

I played D&D 3.5 for a while a few years back, but this reads more like a story than a session, TBH. That's a good thing, however.
Title: Re: The All Guardsmen Party
Post by: stabbymcstabstab on April 09, 2015, 04:16:32 pm
I have some 40k experince, but your stories are actually very good for getting the universe across. Hell if you could throw this in a book I'll buy it in a heartbeat, this feels more like a actual novel then a written recount of a game session.
Title: Re: The All Guardsmen Party
Post by: UXLZ on April 09, 2015, 10:10:58 pm
Mm, you couldn't make it a novel, at least one available for sale. GW would pounce all over that.

I still can't figure how much of this stuff actually happens in-game and how much you add in later. Do you take notes while you're playing? Record the game sessions?

I have online RPG, 4E and 5E, as well as some 40K experience. However, I do think these things would be very enjoyable without that background knowledge, it just makes them oh so much more. Someone without it might not get the same feeling of 'ohshitohshitohshit' when Necrons or Chaos Space Marines are spotted, for instance.
Title: Re: The All Guardsmen Party
Post by: Baffler on April 09, 2015, 11:33:35 pm
I have very little experience with either thing, and I still thoroughly enjoyed this. I knew (or could guess) enough 40k stuff to work out most of what wasn't directly explained, so I guess I'm not completely uninitiated, but I'd say it was pretty close.
Title: Re: The All Guardsmen Party
Post by: Bomepie on April 10, 2015, 05:29:52 pm
Well I'm glad that I'm managing to keep things relatively accessible. Thanks for the input guys.

Someday I'd like to consult a publisher about whether it's worth the effort to rework the story into a standalone IP, or possibly break through GW's fan-fiction-avoidance system and ask if they want the series for themselves.

Anyway, 95% of what I write happens in game, but I do embellish a lot. I get a lot more mileage out of a single roll or skill-use, but conversely I skip over a lot of dialogue. As for memory, for reasons beyond all reckoning I can remember pretty much every action taken by the group. Exact words can be hard, as well as exact damage numbers and such, but I have near total recall of the story itself. If I want dialogue, or fine details about what a character was thinking or how close a roll was or something, I do have to track the players down and see what they remember.

Heh, I first got into D&D in the first place because of some excellent campaign journals, and the same for Paradox's various grand strategy games, as well as DF and Aurora LPs. If a game can inspire a writer to produce a quality story, it's usually worth checking out.  :P

Despite an absolutely glacial writing pace, the next chapter is finally up!

The team goes to capture a live tyranid zoanthrope in the middle of an orks and tyranid war.

Preparations are made, complaints are had, Space Marines are incompetent, the team gets a crash course in Grav-chute usage, Twitch completely snaps, and the captain is perpetually angry.

I've returned from the mountains and writing has resumed! Here's a short interlude from between where the last chapter left off and where the next chapter starts!

Now, this started as an intro piece, but it became far too large, so I split it off. As a result, the writing style is a bit different from usual, and significantly more raw party dialogue has been left in. So I'd like to apologize in advance if the language gets a little crude, it's Aimy's fault.

Actually none of us have ever served, but we've spent a fair amount of time around friends who have, and all share a fondness for military fiction books, movies, and games. Also, Sarge and Twitch both play WW2 reenactment paintball.

Our group is a bunch of programmers and techs who went to school together in Colorado and played a lot of D&D. Nowadays we're all grown up, Sarge and Doc have kids, and we only get to play every few weekends.

(I was going to try and do a detailed rundown of how everyone acts, but it wound up sounding really awkward, so I'm just stealing something our DM wrote)

Quote
Around the table it's a sort of movie-theater attitude when there's not any combat. Everyone is sitting around the mat and yelling advice at eachother, pointing out the army-men that represent the team or the npcs and slandering them, or speculating what sort of craziness they could accomplish with their current situation. I'm throwing out raw information and acting as final judge, and Sarge's player is acting as a sort of arbitrator and organizer. Shoggy sits there and tries to take notes whenever someone says or does something amusing. If he's behind on his writing we have to take his laptop away so he stays focused.

I'll typically lay down the generalities of a situation and let them either ask for details or make up the minor stuff themselves. Also, after they get into the swing of things, the players will occasionally handle a NPC's behavior for me, which improves speed nicely. It's a far more collaborative environment then the games I ran back in school were.

In combat everything is a sort of controlled panic, with everyone watching the turn timer and checking their sheets and postion on the mat. It's occasionally punctuated by people slapping their actions down or someone yelling at everyone to shut up and help with the idea they just had. When stuff get's really bad one of them will start running interference by asking me annoying questions about enemy positions or something while the rest scramble.

Another quote from him about how gameplay generally tends to go
Quote
The players tend to act like kids playing with dolls or drunken spectators, than real roleplayers. You hear a lot of "Twitch does X" as opposed to "I do X". Here's a sample of how a scene tends to come together
  • We've just finished a combat scene, I've described the horrific results, and just informed them that enemy reinforcements are coming.
  • They ask if the shuttle's coming, I ask them what they do when they realize the shuttle hasn't been called
  • Doc's player decides that Aimy irrationally blames Tink for not thinking of it sooner
  • Tink's player ponders whether it would be funnier to let that lie, or to antagonize her, then leads a group effort to think of what the most assholish response would be. "Skunk-haired-super-bitch" is arrived at.
  • Doc's player announces Aimy's intention to beat the shit of Tink for that one
  • Tink's player decides Tink will run away while whooping like zoidberg, but I make him roll initiative, he loses
  • Doc's player vaguely describes how Aimy is totally kicking Tink's ass, Twitch's player suggests that she is forcing him to eat dirt and asking "who's the bitch now" Hilarity Ensues
  • While some of the players continue to discuss what sort of semi-witty responses, and pleas for mercy Tink might make, I ask Nubby's player what he's doing....

Man I had to dig a long ways to find this thread, that really says something about my writing pace...

Anyway, here's the next chapter of the All Guardsmen Party, (Or at least part of it, no Tyranids are actually delivered in this portion, but I intend to catch up by this weekend or next)

In this chapter a Station is visited, Sarge is inquisitorial, NPCs are suprisingly useful, a black marketeer is contacted, Doc does scary things, a heroic speech is made, and vengeance is promised.

I definitely would be interested in exploring the idea of what kind of Inquisitional philosophy Sarge would espouse if he lived that long. The party has waded neck-deep into tech-heresy and even vaguely tolerates the xeno, so I'm guessing it'd have to be a Radical one.

Clearly, everyone is a Xanthite.

Honestly, there's probably not any school that Sarge would claim membership in. If you asked him, he'd raise and eyebrow and ask just what the hell you were talking about, then ignore your answer, and go do whatever looked the least-likely to get him and his men dead/purged for heresy. If there was a Survivalite school, he'd be it's leader. Except he wouldn't, because that sounds like the sort of job that takes a lot of paperwork and gets people trying to slip scorpions into your bed and shit.

I'm not sure if I'd describe active tech-heresy and subversion of the Adaptus Mechanicus alongside having rescued and subsequently willingly abetted a Tau xeno scum the course of action least likely to get purged. Frankly, the only major taboo the party hasn't broken by now is sympathy for Chaos, and that could be just one failure in the Occurrence Border away.

Luckily, the Inquisition gets a lot of leeway with this sort of thing when their local cogboys are on the liberal end of the "disconcerting metal tinkerer" scale, like the interrogator who stayed behind on the xenotech-purchasing world and his sword that occasionally whispers about blood.

Yeah, the lets mix two 40k things together to make something EVEN WORSE has gotten to be a thing, the DM calmed down with it after this though.

It's a very confused situation aint it? In retrospect we should've gotten REALLY nervous when the DM cut off our communications.

Glad you liked it, I was afraid thing were getting a little too disorganized (too much compulsive re-writing) to be intelligible. Sometimes I'm tempted to just post the raw "greentext" notes along with the chapter, if only to help keep track of what's going on.

The All Guardsmen Party Interlude: Escape

http://www.theallguardsmenparty.com/secret3.html

One last little inter-session bit and a bunch of lore before the campaign's final mission. I regret having to just talking-head so much of it, but I was going nuts trying to put so much dialogue into something readable.

Spotted you in the "Random things you made thread". And I can't believe who you can find here on bay12 eh? Love your story's they are my favorite 40k fan works! I originally found them by the guy doing the text-to-speech covers of you work on YouTube.
So ah? Is this still a think?

Yeah, still a thing, just an incredibly slow one.

Trying to get back into the swing of things after the sudden gear-shift into video editing, but hoping to finally finish off the current pen-ultimate bit in the next month or so.

Yeah, just a little, was waiting to finally finish the chapter before I updated anywhere aside from my site, but boy has that backfired...
