What would the dwarves call themselves in their own language?
« on: September 28, 2018, 06:30:31 am »

In terms of its sound and meaning, which Dwarven language compound word do you think best describes how toady's dwarves might refer to themselves?

I quite like Tholdurad, 'Deepbeards'. Although, Zirildurad is more apt for some of my recent volcano embarks...

Urist, of course.
Urist means "dagger" in their language. They aren't sharp enough.

Urist is a Bay12 cultural term. It originated from a 23a story in which an insane dwarf named Urist locked herself away from the world and murdered all migrants.

(And yes, in their language it means "dagger". I mean Urist in the sense of Urist McDwarf, the archetypal/default/standard name.)

The wiki page even includes an "aren't that sharp" joke.

I'd say Lamudos, "Stone-men" or Onoltilat, "Mountain-children."

Depends whether they prefer embellishment, legends and fancy words or more honest expression of their fundamental traits.

If the first is true, they may name themselves:

Beardmen/Beardedmen (Duradudos)
Buriedmen (Ostarudos)
Cavedwellers (─skokeb)
Mudlovers (Olevon, or Salapanelime in Elvish)
Necromongers (Ugithodes, the tribes which learned necromancy)
Rockmasters (Id˘n)
Steelfists(Delerdur)
Stoneborn (Lamnˇton)
Stoneworkers (Lamcubor)
Tunnelcreatures (Ëdmes)

If they prefer honesty, then:

Basic race (Ensebarkim)
Blunttools (UnÔllor)
Dimlights (Ar÷shistam)
Dogeaters (Idardeb)
Drunkenwarriors (Ërikor)
Dullknives (Rumadzasit)
Emptyminded (Kisatottan)
Flimsymortals (Tetisttunom, there is no word for puny)
Horrorswallowed (Kozothmozib, the tribes which learned necromancy)
Illfated (Enentarem)
Mindcontrolled (Ottanegul)
Potheads (Tezadser)
Roughgems (Dumatkad˘l)
Screamqueens (Ubasesrel)
Shortlives (Idromthunen)
Stonebrains (Lamidek)
Tragicdefects (Mososaluth, there is no word for mistake or error for some reason)
Uglysuckers (Eknareb)
Weremen (Seneludos)

Unfortunately there appears to be no word for that. That would have been my choice too.

Wereman just means manman, which does nothing but remind me of the song from 2.5 Men.

Unless one of the "man" means humans, and the other means males. Also, there are many wereelephants and wereasses who are not humans after transforming back, which suggests that the were- means something more generic in DF, like sapient races for example.

True, but if it is to apply to all dwarves, it can't just mean male dwarves.

"A sentient race that turns into [male?] humans on the full moon" is... not a good description of dwarves.

I'd say it should depend on their civs. Not all dwarves, for exemple, wear beards or live underground, or be particularly short and stout. For self reference, I like to imagine my dwarves referring to themselves like :

Ľ People of X, with X being the name of their civs. Shorter alternatives are preffered, ie Dwarves of the Grand Lancers should call themselves "Lancers".
Ľ If notable characteristics, be it physical or cultural, are converging toward something recognizable, I use that instead. IE a civ that dresses in blue and white and have clouds for a civilization symbol would call themselves "sky people".

That's just how I do tho
