Be sure to make a lot of Pictures and greet The Toad from me.
I would come, but its a long trip from germany ;)
I was fired from my job. I will no longer be able to afford coming down.
Well I will come this time, if I get hired in the next 7 days and start sometime after the 11th. Unfortunately I don't see that happening. I'm rather annoyed at my boss. Fires me one week before I go on vacation? What kind of bullcrap thing is that to do to someone? Especially when it ruins their chances go to the Dwarf Fortress Meetup.I was fired from my job. I will no longer be able to afford coming down.
Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope next year you'll be able to come and join us!
Panama Hotel looks like it might work.
It's within walking distance of the Amtrak Station.

Too bad that Seattle isn't cool enough to have a mass transit system.
I have a question!
How long will you all be staying?
I'm arriving on the 8th, and leaving on the 11th.

I will be arriving at (presumably) 8:30 PM on the 8th. I forget when I get my return tickets.
Shame you won't be able to make it, madpraxis. I'm sure your money was better spent on new brakes anyway! :)That's like my wife insisting that our money is better spent on bills. FALSE!
Where are you guys staying? And uh. I drove here from about the same distance as you and I'm up and around. I drove. You sat there. Don't nap. Losers. Haha
Edit: Who the Crap would ever guess it would be so difficult to find somewhere to eat in a city??
Arg, I wish I was able to be around tonight to tune in...

Of course there isn't anything to see at the moment.
:edit:
Ok guys, the event doesn't even start until 6pm pst. People keep asking why the stream isn't up on the webcast chat, and well, that's because there is nothing to stream unless you want to see my ugly ass typing away at my computer at home.
Toady is answering questions about multi-threading and pathfinding.
I managed to watch part of it, but if I'd known it wasn't being saved I would have stuck around for everything. Screw sleep. :-\Yeah, I'm really sorry about that. What happened was in the beginning I was using a program to do the streaming which saved the stream automatically and put it on the page. This program stopped working at some point, so I had to switch to the we interface which apparently does not save it. We should have some pictures coming in shortly though.
Anyway, thanks Toady and Threetoe for your answers and insights (even those I missed)!
Not even a save on your HDD?
Don't stress about it, Sir Finkus. Some was better than none, and now we know what to avoid/think of next time. :)Yeah, I agree, what happened, happened, and so on. At least this year there was the chance for some to be in the meeting without actually being there, thanks to you.
Darn, I woulda stayed around longer had I known. Oh well, excellent work at getting the live stuff working anyway Sir Finkus. I would just worry about your new elf designation now.
Is the save from 'Tombcities' the fortress Toady One and ThreeToe fought the epic battle against the undead river inhabitants around anywhere? I would love to try my hand at salvaging that disaster. Its hilarious how the RNG picked the name and how it turned out under even under the holy guiding hands of the Adams brothers.
[02:01:16] <Willfor> and a whole lot of other neat things when you could hear it over the person who was playing piano in the background
Can somebody help me with something? What was the name (and the nick) of the Guy with nice furry-ears?

Man, he was good but wow was he loud!
Photography conditions weren't optimal, but here's what we got off our camera, including the group shot. I haven't altered these so there are red eyes and they are each 3 MB or something.

I believe that was Alfador.
Did they work at the bar? If not, why aren't they in the picture? One of them left early, because she is my girlfriend and we both left early due to the long drive north to Vancouver. I don't know what became of the other one.

Is that a woman? I don't know if i want to find out.

At one point, I counted four women among those at the meetup.

I think insulting random people on the internet works better when you do it outside of a community they probably frequent.
No offense intended, but who is the creepy vampire in the back of the group?

He was actually pretty cool guy, even though he LOOKED creepy, while talking to him I did not find him creepy in the least.

Did he have a name tag, or is that too conformist?

Speaking of the pictures... I'm not in any of them. :(

Is it possible to still watch? SOmehwere?
Thanks again to TurnpikeLad for setting everything up and to everyone who came, especially those who had a long way to go. I had a great time. The only problem is that one of you guys gave me the swine flu! I’ve been living on zinc tablets and Tylenol for two days now. If I recover, I can say it was worth it, and I hope we can meet again someday in the bright future.
This was awesome, despite my constant sniveling and coughing. One can't really decide when one gets suddenly and violently ill, but I apologize and I hope no one gets sick because of me.
I've become more and more sick over the course of the night, so I can't promise much for tomorrow, but we'll see.

Holy shit, I'm sorry, guys.
I thought I was doing better but then I got worse later on in the night. Wouldn't have bothered coming had I known that would have happened. I'm sorry, and I hope you guys get better. Is that the swine flu? It never turned into too much more than coughing and a runny nose, for me.
I really feel terrible about that. Sorry, everyone.

It's ok, now if you'll just go in that empty room and pull the lever...

Nah, Threetoe was joking about the swine flu, and I'm not sure he got yours, or just yours. I think I got yours, since those are my symptoms. Threetoe also had a scratchy throat. Maybe he got two of them. This is what I get for exiting my cave once a year, but I'm up for next year.
The one in black in the middle is my common-law wife, so...Did they work at the bar? If not, why aren't they in the picture?http://bay12games.com/meetup09/DSC00333.JPG
If the one in black in the middle of this pic is a lad, I'd be shocked :P
...common-law wife...
Damn you, demanding university schedule! I only live a couple hours away! When's the next meet?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That would be the ultimate df meetup location.

I gotta say, turnpikelad, you have an awesome beard.

People expect to become diseased at things like this. Or they should.
Convention crud is just the forerunner to the infectious macrocommunity that we're slowly creating through globalisation that will one day lead to the supervirus that will kill us all.People expect to become diseased at things like this. Or they should.
Too true--it's become a jargon term that "convention crud" or "con crud" refers not to any specific disease (though it is often spoken as if it does) but to any illness that shows symptoms immediately upon coming home from a convention or meetup, presumably contracted either at the event or during travel on the way there (back in January, a friend of mine spent a week at my place, having arrived in Seattle by train... and we're pretty sure the horrible all-of-digestive-tract illness we spent half of that week suffering through came from that train.). It's a gamble you take, expecting to lose because either way you get to go to the meetup.

Not if Madagascar closes its ports.
Woah, there was a meetup? I live just a few miles from downtown. Are there gonna be more?
