Title: Dwarf Fortress Talk #2: Topic Vote and Teaser
Post by: Toady One on August 23, 2009, 07:18:15 pm
Teaser for #2 (http://www.bay12games.com/media/teaser_2.mp3) (special silent appearance by Scamps), ~1.3MB

Post-Teaser Talk (http://www.bay12games.com/media/bonus_teaser_2.mp3), ~5.3MB -- Rainseeker says:  "Bonus Extended Scamps Discussion - A continuation of our teaser conversation in which Tarn discusses more of Scamps, magma men's inability to melt brains, and bronze colossus' leperous limbs.  Warning, this is just a bonus, and as such ends rather abruptly." (transcript available (http://www.bay12games.com/media/transcript_teaser_2.html))

Somewhere in there, you can hear Scamps's tummy being pounded.

We are going to try out a discussion segment on the next show and we've provided some options for you to vote on up in the poll.  I've set the poll to expire after 5 days so I have time to think about things a bit.  The selection won't always be so violent, but I've been doing violent programming lately, he he he.

There isn't any sound, or there is something wrong on my comp. I have the sound up but I am not getting anything. Help?

I just downloaded it from the site and it's working fine for me.  Are other mp3s playing there?

I'm going to go with "something wrong on your comp" because they worked fine for me.  Try a youtube vid or something.

Lots of cool stuff just in that second teaser, especially the stuff about combat, with the bolts barely sticking in the bronze colossus (could those potentially poke out an eye at least?) and the wound trajectories.

They have [EXTRAVISION], so their eyes don't actually do anything, but you could disfigure them for the rest of their existence, since they don't heal.  A moral victory.

I clicked on BOTH links, and nothing on both of them.
Went to youtube, and its fine.
What do I do?

Check your MP3 player's volume settings.  Try to play some other MP3s (http://www.mmedia.is/maggih/mp3/nycpopfest/cats-on-fire---higher-grounds.mp3) (yes that link is legal).  Try a different MP3 player.

They have [EXTRAVISION], so their eyes don't actually do anything, but you could disfigure them for the rest of their existence, since they don't heal.  A moral victory.

Oh THAT'S what that tag does.

I like the idea of ancient colossuses being covered in dents etc., like a tally of people's pathetic attempts to defeat the thing.

You can try right clicking on the link and saving the file to your computer.  That should give you more options for playing it than just your browser plug-in, though I don't know enough about this sort of thing to be much more help.

Edit:Spelling

Talos is the Colossus in Jason & the Argonauts, correct?

I like the idea of ancient colossuses being covered in dents etc., like a tally of people's pathetic attempts to defeat the thing.

I had four pages of individualized blood stains on my various colossus parts at the bottom of my inventory after the test.  I guess that should probably be contracted or something, eventually.  I wonder if little helper birds would evolve to clean the colossus over the ages.

edit:  Yeah, I'm pretty sure Talos is right.  He had a heel screw out cap thing, and I'm not sure what was inside him.

Are the intro and outro music part of a larger piece?

Will said music make it into dwarf fortress?

For anyone who hasn't seen Jason and the Argonauts (like me): the bronze colossus scene. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BaLKYlC07w&feature=related#t=4m33s)  I think I'm going to go back and start from the beginning though, this looks pretty entertaining.

Interesting.

Judging by what the vote is Everyone may have to suddenly scramble to the question section. (2 days to come up with questions HA!)

Unless the community questions still get asked anyway but it eventually shifts to Megabeasts halfway through for a Megabeast focus.

Actually reading it closer (I REALLY got to start reading things closer) I am just simply confused...

Can someone explain exactly what this is for?

I think it's like a general topic of discussion rather than a Q/A format (although that still only tends to be worthwhile insofar as it leads to discussion).

Ohh I see.

Personally I am kinda interested in the Megabeast section and really can't wait for a second Megabeast week.

Though I wonder how interesting such a conversation can get. I mean there are so many unanswered questions about them as well.

Though being a discussion it may just boil down to where Toady gets his inspiration for many of the Megabeasts. Such as why he added the Bronze Collosus

Which isn't a bad thing. I loved when Toady explained his main inspiration for Goblins and posted a video too.

One minor point - when you're starting to talk over the intro music/playing the outro music over the speech, you should probably fade it in and out a bit more. It seemed to come in a little bit abruptly, and kind of override what was being said.

Apart from that, fantastic. All pf these are giving some great insight into what is coming up in the next version, and the reasonings behind it.

Also - the bronze coloussus problem didn't really come as a shock - i mean how /do/ you kill a giant solid metal statue that can punch you in the face? I laughed out loud when toady suggested building a wall around it.

Toady one has canceled Release Podcast, Interrupted by Guitar Man.

I for one wouldn't mind nigh-invincible colossusi.  Megabeasts SHOULD be things that are obscenely difficult to face and can and do destroy entire forts on a regular basis, rather than the current

"Oh gee a dragon I guess I'll trap it and toss it into the arena with the rest of my collection"

EDIT: Why isn't there an "everything" button on the vote menu!? IT ALL SOUNDS SO WONDERFUL

According to the DF Talk page, (http://bay12games.com/dwarves/df_talk.html) it's by Ollieh, which means it's probably (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=17230.msg167459#msg167459) just for the podcast.

Thanks for the preview!  Surprising amount of info jammed in there.

Also, my question about animal healthcare got brought up, so I guess I'll think up some new questions involving sieges.

Hopefully Toady won't have to spoil too much of the underground stuff, I'm really looking forward to finding it myself.

Actually can a Siege weapon stop the "Solid Bronze Statue" Collosus or even injure one?

Also I always assumed the Bronze Collosus was hallow because yeah... An animate giant metal statue would be nearly unstoppable.

Also Toady, If you don't chose to go down the road of using Telos (Molten Blood) for the Bronze collosus can you make another megabeast with it? I personally Like the hallow statue Bronze collosus more then Telos

Wait is it Telos or Thanos? Curses

Because according to what I remember of Greek Mythology there are three giant metal statue creatures (One being a Boar)

I would think a variety of bronze colossi would be interesting.  Assuming it might be neat if in the raws there were several varieties of them, from hollow to molten bronze filled to noxious vapor filled to solid.  I would think the hollow one would be best in vanilla DF.

I imagine an adamantine-tipped ballista bolt could do some damage.

I wonder if the molten core could function as a strength-linked tissue, so that if it leaks out, they remain alive but lose all their strength.  I don't know if it could be made to work that way though.

Heh.

Basically if the Molten Core Collosus runs out of liquid bronze it becomes Hyper-Anemic huh?

On a side note (I am not SOO concerned about going off topic because this is a voting topic rather then discussion): Why do Ironmen and Golems often have a Toxin inside them? Is this based on real life Chemistry or some sort of myth?

I know some substances break down into toxic materials, but is Iron one of them?

Haha, I love Scamps. Makes me want a cat, actually -- I hate most cats, but I had one a few years ago that was completely awesome. Not aloof at all, just very friendly (and she could walk upright on her hind legs which was kind of cool). I miss her.

Looking forward to the new podcast! Have fun with it.

The stuff you are doing with individual combat is really interesting, but if I'm going to sit through a podcast, I definetly want to hear about Megabeasts... The Bronze Colossus holds a special place in my heart, it should definetly appear on the box art.

Making the gargantuan statues who walk the earth and crush nations have a molten core is the OPPOSITE of what should happen here.

A walking statue of metal should be neigh invulnerable. What, is a dwarf going to hit it with a hammer? No. That would do nothing.

Magma, magma, magma. Failing that, hide and don't come out.

And then hold an absurdly elaborate funeral ceremony for all the champions that burned in the magma, got crushed by a mountain, or got impailed in the back by a ballista bolt before getting anywhere near their target.

Personally I can't wait to here about what we'll see in sieges the update after this one, but megabeasts and individual combat are both more pertinent to this update, and frankly they're all great choices.

Perhaps it should depend on if it can find visible construction. After all, if the landscape is indistinguishable from an unihabited place, what reason would the megabeast have to flip out and smash things?

It would have had to hear of the fortress somehow if it showed up!

Could any DF player avoid scratching the outside of a map at all?
Even with a hidden entrance, all that riverwater and those tree's outside would have to be tempting.

I think that when the bronze colossus has bled out completely that it should lose all mobility and become a giant artifact statue, worth an amazing amount of gold, but completely incompatible with trading.
(Too large/heavy to sell)
Maybe even permanently in one spot because of weight issues.
Or you could deconstruct it for a bunch of bronze ore...

(never mind, that would require a gigantic furnace...)

I can imagine a bunch of funny scenarios where the player tries baiting/herding the colossus into the perfect place, so it can be the centerpiece of artistry.

"God damn it! Why did it have to die one tile away from the center of my bronze altar?!"

well with the dynamic workshops next release, it might be possible for the concept of super sized jobs.  i would be disappointing if you couldn't deconstruct it, then reconstruct it one tile away, after all isn't that the dwarven style?

but really, why have a dead colossus just standing there?  if you breed cats then you can keep it entertained until some goblins show up.  they may have good metallurgy, and they may bring pets, but dwarves have giant metal monsters.

Or maybe you could convince a dwarf ghost to possess it. And then you have a dwarven version of a WH40K dreadnought. Alternately, instead of some kind of molten blood, fill it with magma/molten bronze men that ooze out when wounded.

well with the dynamic workshops next release, it might be possible for the concept of super sized jobs.
Well, there should be a way to capture animals 'manually,' by sending a team of dwarves out with some ropes and a net. I'd imagine it'd take a lot of dwarves for a colossus though.

edit:

become a giant artifact statue
Oh, speaking of that, the new release will have statue descriptions, yes? If so, what are bronze colossi statues described like?

I think the main reason I personally enjoy them so much is that they are made by and for the Dwarf Fortress community. All the previous ones done on other sites have been aimed at people who don't know much, so there is a lot of the standard 'So tell us what Dwarf Fortress is about' and 'What can you do?' and stuff like that.

These are for people who already know that, and who want to get a bit more insight into the game rather than general interview-y type questions

Damn, my choice (Indiv. Combat) came in LAST.  Granted there's been a lot of dev log stuff about that lately.

individual combat is interesting, but let's face it, toady has been talking about individual combat a lot since that is what he has been coding this month.  mega beasts are cool, but sorta spoilerish, granted the nonspoiler stuff on mega beasts is still pretty cool.  this leaves sieges, which is how i chose sieges, i am sure something similar is how it became number one by a landslide.  when i was picking at first i couldn't decide between mega beasts and sieges until i realized that a decent amount would be spoiler type stuff, it will be a pretty good topic when 41 gets released in december/january.

The problem is that for some reason I don't think much will be said about Sieges other then technical problems.

"Id like to put in Catapults but Pathfinding and all that" Toady (not real quote)

I think he actually sounded pretty enthused about siege towers etc. last time that came up.  But yeah, pathfinding issues are inherent to sieges.

I do wonder if he will bring up making Constructions destructable without special conditions.

What he said. I'm also shocked megabeasts didn't win, seemed to be a lot of people gung-ho about that.
