FINALLY! Dwarf Therapist for mac!!!
« on: February 17, 2012, 01:15:19 am »

I know, I know... The tile is a bit fallacious, the mac version ain't ready yet...

Right know dwarf therapist is not supported on mac, but is going to be very soon since DwarfEngineer, the author of DF therapist, is raising fund to buy a mac mini and start working on it! Isn't it great? I though I would make him a bit of publicity, and sorry for the ambiguous title again...

I donated a fair sum, but 170$ is missing over the 400$ required and here is a link to the paypal donation Tip Jar. If you prefer, you can go directly on the DF Therapist subject in the modding section and use their link if you find it safer, it's going at the same place anyway, for a full mac support!!

Have a nice day mac users!!

Definitely wrong forum but I think you know it already.

Also, while I have nothing against the tip jar system, posting just to advertise a donation system for a third party software in a place where the whole discussion of that software doesn't belong even remotely is in my opinion both a bad habbit as well as rude towards Toady. Yes, the tip jar was good invention just so DwarfEngineer may get a mac, I even considerd donating there myself, but discussion of it should be kept in Dwarf Therapist thread.

Thank you, have a nice day and enjoy Dwarf Fortress!  ;)

You are, sir, totally right...

The thing is it's been announced for some time and I doubt a lot of mac user necessarily see it in the modding section, it's not that obvious (I come often on the forum and never saw it)... Add on this the fact that my mind anticipated for one instant not to have to assign job with the current system anymore... It was to much, I had to derogate from forum customs and sophisticus rules :)

I don't feel rude toward toady about this... I mean, as game UI is by far the most flawed unenjoyable part of this game and that I support him only if I find the game fun and I play it (which I have been doing for a long time), it might not be eternally the case if job assignment UI stay as it is forever (without therapist access of course). I'm sure I'm not alone on that fair point of view n_n

If anybody ask for it, I will gladly report my own thread to a moderator and ask him to atom smash it! Just to make sure the thread skin and fingernail don't raise up to attack another thread.

Being the hardcore Mac user that I am, I'd like to tell everyone to just use Wine. So, so easy. And no waiting.

nevermind, when I launched dwarf therapist it can't find any running copy of DF. So this brings up a question how Darchitect plays it on osx?

To the poster above me:

I also had trouble getting it to work with wine, however I've finally succeeded thanks to a post that I found made by DrKillPatient.

Download latest windows version of DF and also DT. Google for winebottler and download required stuff.

To get DF working:
- Download the Wine .dmg and drag Winebottler and Wine into your applications folder, then startup Wine. Click the Wine icon on your taskbar and find Change Prefix.
- From there, create a prefix (it may auto-detect some other games and create prefixes for them, don't bother with that) in a convenient directory, call it 'generic' or something-- you can use different prefixes for different applications, but unless each needs different registry settings you don't need to, in my experience. Click Change Prefix again after it's done configuring and make sure Wine is using that one.
- Double-click a .exe and it should start X11 (simulating the Windows window system), and a little while after DF should start up in X11.
- Don't close Wine or X11 while DF is running unless you want to close without saving, since it depends on both being open.

I suppose you could also compile Therapist for OSX, the source is available, but the above method is much easier.

Clarification: actually after clicking the exe fail a small window pops up asking which prefix you want to use, choose *generic* or whatever you named it.

edit: I'm still having trouble figuring out how I can import saves from my DF OSX version. I tried copying the region1 folder to the saves folder which resides under data, but I don't have the option continue playing in main menu. When I launched savegameupdater it failed. Had some kind of error about not finding the files. Anyone can help me out with that?

Sorry for the late reply, but yes, Winebottler with a generic prefix is how I do it. Once it installs the Windows directory under your Username/ folder, I put DF and DT in the Program Files folder. Et, voila! Playtime!

Hey thanks I got it working now  :D

Here are the step to follow if anyone is interested:

1) Download latest windows versions of DF and DT.
2) Download winebottler http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/. It should also download wine. Launch them both.
3) Click the Wine icon on your taskbar and find Change Prefix.
4) From there, create a prefix (it may auto-detect some other games and create prefixes for them, don't bother with that) in a convenient directory, call it 'generic' or something.
5) Click Change Prefix again after it's done configuring and make sure Wine is using that one.
6) Move DF and DT to the Program Files associated with the *general* prefix. DT won't find any running versions of DF otherwise. Mine was located in *username*/documents/generic/drive_c/program files.
7) When launching DF and DT a small window pops up asking which prefix you want to use, choose general.
8) Strike the earth.

Hey Tulx, thanks for putting the instructions together. This should be stickied or put on the wiki.

I just wanted to add, for future reference, that if Dwarf Therapist in Wine starts running slow or gets really laggy, find it's preference file, "Dwarf Therapist.ini," and trash it.

It is located in *username*/documents/generic/drive_c/users/*usernameagain*/application data/UDP Software/.
