I was having a look at the save through the legends viewer, and I noticed some pretty amusing thins you may want to incorporate into your story:

Our civilization of dwarves (the Arena of Consideration) has been ruled by night creatures for most if its 200 year existance. There was only one long-lived dwarf king, who actually managed to die of old age in 191, then another night creature (Libash Razormemorable) until 196, then a dwarf Queen (Deler Straptowns) until now.

We have been in war since 45 (but no battles since 79) with the giant fiend spiders - and we are crushed them.
For some reason we have more drowspiders than dogs.

Maybe the fact that we were enslaving drowspiders (to the fiend spiders' point of view) caused the war?
Maybe the giant fiend spiders are to drowspiders what elves are to trees?

So what configs are you using, exactly? (Harder farming? Fortress defense? Advanced metalworking? Castes?)

Actually I did take note of this whole fiend spider war when I embarked, and I was curious as to why we were at war with them :P I guess I now know! Alright writing some updates now and I'll link them to the OP. (and play on.. I just kept a notepad open and wrote as I was playing to keep notes of the whole year)

Alright, some good news, and some bad; First of all, I have just been told by our miners that a tunnel had been opened, connecting to a sizable stockpile with enough room for about 15 workshops. I've set the concubines to work hauling our crap supplies from the wagon to a more... discreet.. location. I've sent Meph off to go cut some trees for our carpenters. The bad news? Despite the abundance of ore, there seems to be a lack of usable, non economic stone... The masons have enough for the time being, but I fear we may have to start digging down to meet demands.

Summer has just arrived. We have the basics of a dining room, and a statue garden dug out, and have dug out several offices. Naturally, I being the overseer of this dump took the largest one... We're busy digging out some bedrooms so our slaves citizens have a proper place to sleep, without fear of being eaten by the giant eagles I noticed flying around. Oh! Did I mention the giant sponges? Yeah a loada them came on... I've heard tales of these creatures being nigh invincible! In order to test this theory for myself I set out with a masterwork iron axe and set to beating it by the waters edge until we both fell unconscious due to fatigue... Unfortunatley for me it woke up... and broke both my arms... as wierd as that sounds. (It's immobile, how the f%$& does it break my arms!?) Anyway I was escorted to the newly dug out hospital... I'm expecting to make a full recovery.

What an interesting month it has been! Today some new migrants arrived. Amongst them was a capable macedwarf, who was immediatley conscripted. Upon them arriving however, I recieved news of an attack from dabh sebain, a warlock necromancer, presumabley seeking the lives of our citizenry! Upon marching up to him in full military gear, i was surprised to have him greet us. Apparently he meant us no harm. Concerned as to true intents, (He did after all sneak up on us!) I promptly broke both his legs, and decapitated him dispatched of him in a most dwarven manner. After returning from my murderous assault victory, I revieved news that a fisherdwarf, near the river was attacked by not one, but two cave dragons. How they even got to the surface worries me, and upon asking for the casualties, I recieved the answer that there were none. None? Apparently this fisherdwarf wrestled both cave dragons to death. (Actually I wasn't at my computer at the time and am STILL unable to locate the corpses... I just know they were killed somehow by my dwarves) Hmm... dragon roast anyone?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also did I mention the concumbines gave birth? We now have about 10 new babies. They have a tendancy to give birth to whole litters of dwarves...forget catsplosion these things give birth on an unprecedented scale!

The rest of the late summer months had been mostly uneventful. We finally dug out enough bedrooms (Literally the minimum amount, I advise digging more) to house our current populance. The dining room is mostly furnished, as is the statue garden. We have a nice metalworking, carpentry, ceramic, (and sub adequate masonry) industries set up, with many iron weapons and pieces of armor having been constructed. We're running very low on coal, and our fuel stocks are dwindling, so I've started to explore the depths for a source of fuel...
Success! I was awoken by a dwarf, (Whose name I cannot remember for the life of me) telling me several veins of coal have been discovered! Just in time too. Not in time however. We ran out of fuel and I had to manually tell my metalsmiths and furnace operators to get their sorry asses back to work. Lazy shits...
I hear news of a dwarven caravan arriving tommorrow? Perhaps our luck shall hold!

Not a chance... The caravan arrived today. With many goods, and many, many ambushers. I counted 8 kobold thieves, at least 10 warlock snatchers and 3 goblin snatchers. My newly enlisted macedwarf was killed by a warlock, who fired a bolt of lightening at him, causing him to bleed out from literally every orifice of his body. Nasty. I'm in the hospital again with broken arms, as a warlock got lucky and hit me with some sort of energy beam... We killed most of the snatchers. In other news our new marksdwarf squad ran out of ammo when attacking a goblin snatcher and proceeded to beat the goblin to death, only for all of them to fall unconscious due to fatigue :P They look so cute when they're sleeping!! ;)

Oh well. The trading went well. I traded several clay crafts for a bar of platinum, a bar of slade, pig tail seeds, logs, thread, leather, cloth, a mastiff, a few plants, and one piece of lousy frickin coal. I had to give them 1K in urist bucks in profit for those cheap bastards to part with the stuff... I promptly transmuted the platinum into steel for our fledgling weapons/armor industry. Anyway, I've been called back to the mountainhomes as some arsewipe noble needs a new assistant... or something... Goodluck to whoever is running this pit in my absence! I'd advise using the steel bars/slade bar (Actually I think I used the slade bar) and i've just set up an amrory.. use it to make copper plates and start making us platemail! Oh and I forgot to mention build a lever for the bridge spanning the river. may be useful.

Oops sorry missed this. i'm only using harder mining and weaker traps. Everything else is on, except for all those "simple soil/gems/stone/etc" crap.

You using the latest masterwork version?  :-\ Here I'll reupload it.. you extract the file (it's a .rar) and a folder should apear called region 2. You copy/paste this folder in MasterworkDF 1.9.3/dwarf fortress/data/save. Also I made a slight edit to the world so can we use the new world i'm uploading? (I realised my dwarf didnt even have a bed... lol)  :o
