Strange Issue: Underground life vanishes after adventuring?
« on: October 05, 2012, 09:45:01 am »

I have a strange issue here. In this world I have been playing in, when I start an adventurer and play for a little while, underground life starts vanishing. The world starts with the normal underground population. After a few days of adventuring, numbers drop sharply. This includes all cavern life, magma creatures, cavern and magma vermin. Only clowns are left.
If I start a fort without adventuring first, underground population drops only slowly, after several years, as would be expected.
This happens even without discovering the underground in adventure mode.

Any ideas?

Is there a way to get underground population back via save game editing? I have no idea where/how population info is stored...

This is in a pocket world in an unmodded 34.07.

In a short in-game time it goes from this (blank world):

to this (after ~2 days):

to this (after a few days):

EDIT: updated with numbers after 2 days of adventuring

What's probably happening is that when you enter any area, it spawns creatures in the caverns and subtracts them from the appropriate populations, but when you leave the area it forgets to add them back. If it's not on the bug tracker, you should definitely report it, but make sure you test it in version 0.34.11 first, just in case it's something Toady fixed in the meanwhile.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I'm not registered at the bug tracker but I was looking and don't think this is there.

I mostly still play 34.07 because I have a few saves there that I like. Will test it in 34.11 though.

I also have only tested it in copys of this one world, because I have a fort there I like. The fort has no underground life which is how I noticed the issue. Gonna try other worlds too.

Damn, I thought this issue was one of the big old bugs that got fixed.

It was supposed to be fixed in the new version, but I just spotted this in another bug-related thread:
I haven't changed any old bugs deliberately for the big release
So in the inevitable first bug-fix release maybe.

EDIT:
Nope, happens still in 40.02 too.
