I don't know yet if they can pierce stone, but a tower cap growing on my soil level just below the surface, just pierced the (soil) ceiling as it grew a z-level in height.
I now have to patch up a hole in my ceiling, after cutting it down.

Seems like quite a design challenge now to make underground tree farms.

They aren't supposed to grow if there's a wall above the sapling tile, but maybe floors don't work the same way. This might be intentional. Anyway, if you want an underground tree farm, you have to make it several tiles deep now.

It wasn't a floor. It destroyed a undug soil surface tile.

Any chance you have the save of this?  And was it completely vanilla DF, no LNP, no mods of any kind?

Vanilla DF. Only thing I did was repair quarry bushes to give seeds upon processing.

here's the save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9088

The tower cap saplings growing on (F1) level will soon pierce through the roof.

you can play vanilla dwarf fortress with the LNP, I do it all the time (except for phoebus graphics pack). In fact, unless you tell it to do otherwise, it automatically runs vanilla dwarf fortress.

A forgotten beast destroyed a fort because the tower in the caves which I thought was completely sealed somehow had a hole in one of its corners. There was a mushroom tree growing right underneath it. I dunno if I accidentally deconstructed part of the wall by mistake at some point, but now I suspect that tree.

Ugh, fungiwood is even worse, it strikes holes in the ceiling as big as it's cap when cut down.

Mushroom trees are now penetrating to the surface and beyond.  This update has brought giant fungi to the outside world!

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

how should we weaponize this? So far the major effect seems to be fucking up the farm plots above tree farms.

How about this: Let mushrooms grow everywhere around the edge so that invaders have to come on them, and then chop down the relevant tree(s).

This is kinda cool. It wouldn't make sense if this happens with stone but with soil it seems plausible that its a feature.

It's kinda cool, but mostly craptastically annoying. Kills your uderground farms, cause once the ceiling is pierced, they count as outside, no longer inside.
I hope this is a bug, and it will be fixed.

Heh. Humans arrive and find around the dwarven settlement what appears to be a forest of giant fungi.

"I thought you said this was a desert?"
"It is"
"What the Hell do those look like?!?"
