The Abusive Policing Thread: Beyond Brown, No Justice
« on: August 23, 2014, 05:49:17 pm »

So, it's something that has been getting worse (or at least more noticeable) for a while now, and with the stuff going down in Ferguson even more people are beginning to realize that something is rotten with the state of US law enforcement.

Here's a briefer to get you started on exactly what US police have been up to this year:
https://medium.com/@blairerickson/when-people-ask-why-i-have-a-problem-with-american-law-enforcement-its-hard-to-come-up-with-a-61c9e423b003

This is one of the first ones I noticed, and it's just... wow.

Quote
The domestic dispute that summoned the police was between the wife and daughter, not Luis. But the police allege that he was noncompliant when they asked to see his ID and he began walking away to calm his angered wife.

Claiming he was resisting arrest, the cops ambushed Rodriguez and beat him to the ground.

Rodriguez was so disfigured after the five men were done with him that his daughter couldn’t even recognize him. The medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide due to cardiac arrhythmia from physical restraint.

And what did the cops get for their excessive use of force? Paid administrative leave, the legal equivalent of free vacation that’s more a pat on the back than a slap on the wrist.

You guys must drop the idea that racism is a primary factor for these abuse.

1) it's normal that cops get injured in their line of duty. They don't have the same rigth to self defense as civilians.

2) Any act of violence commited by a policeman must be scrutinized. Any shot must be justified in front of a pannel of expert.

3) Police need a police.

Is more like we need for racism to stop being a primary factor for these abuses, unfortunately.

Racism is a large factor in why these abuses happen, who they target, how often they occur, and the severity of any punishment received.

Even if it was removed, things would still be shitty, as is clear from the list I posted, but it's silly to think it's not a factor.

I remember reading (I'll dig up the source when on computer) that the reason why SWAT teams are deployed so often nowadays is because any assets such as possible drug money found from raiding houses means that it is seized and thus goes into the government. Thus, if you deploy SWAT teams instead of beat cops, you can actually make a tidy profit for your department.

America's police force is kinda nuts.

A couple days ago, I saw two policemen in training smoking next to the tobacco free campus sign. Our future law enforcers, everyone.

Racism is also a reason the police who do this still have such high support.

If you want to be efficient, you have to unite peoples. Racism is used to divide Americain, from an external point of view that much is clear.

First a quick review of the cases in the first post show that whites are far from immune from police violence.

Second, racism is hard to prove, and it's pretty obvious that given the over-criminalisation of black youth in America, policemen will be instinctively more cautious around them.
But if you replace the problem about abuse of power by the police, you'll get support from peoples that would not feel concerned about the racism problem and keep the support from liberals.
