As in deconstructing the depot with the traders still inside. Either way obviously the traders go home with the complete loss of their caravan's goods, but is there any difference between just seizing everything and taking the depot right out from under them?

Sieze it, from humans, and they'll get mad, possibly go to war. Deconstruct the depot, they'll just think that their trader sucks at barganing.

They'll just bring a lighter caravan.

So no difference at all between seizing goods and deconstructing the depot when it comes to caravans from your parent civilization?

I feel the need to mention that elves may go to war if you seize too not just humans (and uh, if you have peaceful goblins and a goblin caravan I guess they might too?)

It can take a lot of goading with elves.

I added the diplomat thing, then after he arrived I had the hammerer (who is also in his own 1 man squad so I can gear him properly and prevent him getting good with melee) take his adamantine crossbow and beat him about the face and ass until he got away.

Then I had a straggler with the caravan that arrived right afterwards, so when they arrived I offered them a bunch of wood, including a masterwork sand pear casket. They got offended so I seized their crap, slaughtered all but one, and had the hammerer beat that one about the face and ass til he got away.

Hoping I get some dual sieges now that the goblins finally showed their faces.

An elven trader gave birth while she was here, so I offered them wood, slaughtered everyone but the mother, and sold them the bodies next caravan, still no sieges.

Seizing the market makes the trader angry, which definitely hurts the next trade and possibly leads to war. Even your own folks might hate you enough to not visit you again (and yes that includes immigrants), but they won't go at war with you.

In either case the next years merchant is based on the current years profit. So whether you seize, deconstruct or flat murder to get the goods for free, you probably won't have a merchant next year, or at least he won't bring any valuable goods.

So is there a noticeable difference or political fallout between seizing, deconstructing and just letting the merchants/caravan get sacked?

Well, if you were to ask for stuff from the liason and then deconstruct, he might bring less than you hoped.

I've had some where I just deconstructed the depot and would just get a few pages of random crap.

In my current fort I'm wealthy and buy out the stuff I want with adamantine discs, giving the traders like 100k profit each time, and they load me down with the seeds/booze/whatnot which I requested the year before.

Elves still won't attack me despite having killed all but one member of every caravan they sent, and beating the diplomat before chasing him out of the map.
