I know I mentioned in a battle report wayyyy long ago both factions seeing each others' radar, but that might have been older versions. I'd have to double check, there's entirely a chance that you aren't using similar enough frequencies now. If not, your radar systems cannot detect theirs passively (even though you have the tech in your GARM). By the same token, if you CAN see each others' radar, you might alert their radar-equipped aircraft to your presence from outside visual range by using the radar, or in any case if they're equipped with anti-radiation missiles, they might get a lock indicator when you're using radar, which would tell them something's up.

In order for either side to have ARMs, it's required to be able to pick up enemy radar.  If anything, if our frequencies are different it would be easier to detect enemy radar, because the detection gear wouldn't pick up friendly radars.  If one side can't pick up enemy radar, than that side can't make ARMs.

Radar spotting range uses an inverse fourth power function based on the power.  Radar detection range is inverse-square, so a radar is visible from much further than twice the distance it is capable of spotting at.  This doesn't really apply to ships, though, as the curvature of the earth comes into play.  Airplanes using air to surface radar, however..

But yeah, even if I'm playing devil's advocate, they aren't going to sink many submarines.  They'll get a few, though.  The Mk I eyeball spotting periscopes is more likely to limit damage done instead of killing our subs.

As for improvised depth charges, I was thinking something without a design or revision.  I was also thinking of something that would be of no use in the open sea, or even more constrained coastal waters, but good enough to eventually force a sub out of one of their defended harbours.

For them defending their harbours.. well, even with helicopter patrols, I don't see how they could actually use them to prevent a submarine from infiltrating a harbour.  They'll have to rely on netting and naval mines, and I don't think they even have any naval mines.  I could see a sub sitting outside an oil port, sinking four or five tankers, and shutting down operations for weeks while they hunt it down.  I also don't see any modern small craft in their equipment list, which means less odds of spotting periscopes and such, due to the decks being higher above the water.  With practically their entire lineup of equipment costing four oil, even a temporary advantage could really put the screws to them.

..all that said, they should be able to recieve quite a lot of technical assistance from the Allies on sub hunting.

I didn't consider harbor attacks, that's a very interesting prospect and one that has historical precedent AFAIK.

Do note that Cannala has contact-fuzed naval mines, so it's possible for them to defend certain areas.

They can probably chain them to the ground or put some water in the air tank so its less buoyant without a revision. Really simple to make something sink.

Tell that to our naval engineers they had a hard time making our sub sunk.

Making something sink to the bottom is easy, making something remain at a depth is difficult. They could just use anchors to chain them to the floor at whatever depth the chains rise to, but that would likely involve adding some sort of attachment point without compromising the fuse, and to the best of my knowledge they never made trains, so know nothing about attaching two rigid objects together. Not to mention that anchors to floats would produce a crude form of chain-netting. I do not believe that they have any netting at all, so that would be a completely new technology, thus requiring a design!!!

Early war WW2 anecdote from a British corvette merchant escort ship sailor about their helplessness towards u-boats. Fair warning, there are graphic descriptions of wounds, but I thought it was interesting so I thought I'd share.

Battle Report 30: Autumn 1945

Wiki Stuff: The wiki is coming a long nicely as a list of weapons. Most of them still aren't filled out thoroughly, but for the ones that are I like the way the description is presented along with its history (including related equipment) and lore. The next big thing I want to do is work on the articles for places and events more, so hopefully the wiki can serve as a good starting place for people who are unfamiliar with the setting. With the game spread across several forum threads it's still very confusing to newcomers. Anyone's welcome to help edit the wiki and you can always discuss it in Discord as well.

Update Schedule: Get ready for another slow period, guys! I've started a new job and I'll be doing college classes again very soon as well, so updates are going to be back to "when I feel like it", moreso than already. I had really hoped the game might have ended by now, but I can at least say I don't intend to abandon it altogether. I like the setting a lot and I really want to see this game end with a satisfying conclusion, sooner or later. I'll also be glad when I can hang it up for a while, to be honest- I always have ideas for new forum games and such to start that I'm putting off because I want to keep Arms Race on track, or as close to on track as it ever is.

New Equipment:

The Forenians have spent their whole turn on a design of a type which has been entirely ignored in the Archipelago: The UFN-SS-45 "Boot" is a submarine, intended to hide underwater from Cannalan ships and ambush them with torpedoes when they are off guard. The Boot basically works, although its performance in any aspect could generously be described as "rookie numbers" in comparison to the submarines used by world superpowers. It has a cigar-shaped pressure hull with more ship-shaped outer hull, two screws and a cross-shaped rudder/elevator arrangement at the rear, as well as small bow planes and a con tower with a periscope. It's not very large, or fast, and has a maximum depth of 100 meters. It's armed with new Orca torpedoes, which are exactly the same as Dolphin torpedoes except that they carry more fuel to extend their range, and has a very basic sonar system to help detect ships.

The Cannalans have decided that they need to make a real push to shake up Forenia's advantage in the sky, and their strategy is to make the best possible jet fighter that's cheap enough to deploy en masse. The M1945 'Lancer' Standard Air Superiority Fighter (A-7), often referred to as a 'mini Javelin', is directly based on the Javelin's design principles while being a much smaller, single-engined fighter. Its single engine has a properly functional afterburner system, getting considerably more power for its size, and the other big difference is the inclusion of front canards. Although they make the plane unstable, and even potentially dangerous, this allows for a combination of great maneuverability and low-drag high speed performance. It also includes retractable leading-edge slats, which improve low-speed performance and allow for even more uncompromising high speed performance when they're closed- it can reach speeds approaching the sound barrier, but it's also fairly easy to take off and land. In accordance with its size, it's lightly armed- well, relatively so, with three missile hardpoints and a single (double-barrel) Can Perforator autocannon. Hoping to capitalize on an air advantage, for their revision the Cannalans have made the H-2M1 Portador, a transport helicopter based on the Chupacabra. A rush-job with the conversion to a transport has left it with some issues, notably the more aggressive angle the inter-meshing rotors were placed at (which gave the Chupa its maneuverability) has made the rotors a hazard to people exiting and entering. It also omits the radar for space, and the ordnance mounts and armor for weight, making it inexpensive, an absolute must for a transport which only carries six passengers.

This turn, Cannala has also used their expense credit for the Vengeful Charlotte bomber, making it cheap for the season.
