how to get scholars to writing
« on: February 10, 2018, 05:43:12 am »

I know I've been asking a lot .... but this confuses me for quite a while.
so I got library, got bookcases, tables, chairs, boxes in it, got scrolls and quires in the boxes, got scholars appointed, but why won't they write something?

I usually appoint medics to scholars to keep their medical skills fresh. Even if you provide in a rapid hurry all requirements for moody Dwarf to write a legendary quality book, then with time you get also other books written. My first non-legendary book was of a Dwarf describing how he became a scholar in my fortress... lol? It just takes time. Like year or two. Their wsritting skills also never get above atrocious dubbing or novice. I guess it is because of skill rust.

The next update (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/changelog_page.php) will fix quite a few issues with books, libraries and so forth. Hopefully it will make it more useful, but as it is right now I don't bother with it. Nothing really works, scholars never really learn much (or anything) and scribes stop working for no good reason.

How many months in-game have you waited?
Do your chosen scholars value knowledge?
Also, there is a bug (I think it happens if a scribe copying a book is interrupted), so sometimes you have to forbid the bugged books and then un-forbid in order to get the library working again.

My dwarves haven't written a book in 25 fort years. The first decade, they produced a few books, but then it just stopped. I just don't bother with bookmaking or scholaring anymore until it works properly. Visitors still write books though, and tbh, they write too many books.

Even after 36 fort years in which my dwarves, on average, scholar for about 1 month, no one has a scholaring skill higher than dabbling either. I guess that's skill rust coming into play.
I guess higher skills can be achieved though by having dedicated scholars that are kept in the library with a repeat lever. They'll get real slow at some point though for not having their needs tended to, but at least they won't be subjected to skill rust if they keep scholaring.

Yeah, I've used your method in my fortress quite a lot. Typically, once they start to get distracted I'll have them produce a few crafts, socialize & pray before taking them off vacation.

Hopefully the new version will improve the way libraries function
