It seems that the dwarves have all of the raw materials to build a conveyor belt for the general use of moving things from a preset A to a preset B.

Say we have two points, A (a quarry) and B (a stockpile/crafting zone). These points are separated by a distance of around 150-200. Now, every stone left down in the quarry must be carried, singly, by a dwarf the entire distance. What about letting the machines we have (wind and water and dwarf power) work for us instead? By fashioning a gear with a chain and a track (and possibly a pile of bins, buckets, or movable flooring), three or four dwarves could move that stone much more efficiently! The tools (technology) seem to be all there, it's just that the game mechanics themselves don't seem to be at hand.

The belt would probably be best done as a set of buildings.

Previously suggested.
See "mine carts" and "conveyor belts."

A "wormhole effect" might be the best way to produce such a thing. Perhaps the entire mechanism could act like a single massive bin or barrel when its powered. At any point along the entire mechanism, a dorf can drop in an item. At any other point along the entire mechanism, a dorf can pick up the item.

I'd imagine it would involve linking tiles together in creative ways, such that one tile would be adjacent to another even hundreds of spaces away, assuming you have enough power to run the entire contraption. It would certainly make industry far more efficient.
