I've been trying to design a mosaic using different colored floorstones for my grand meeting hall and I'd really like to see some of your designs.

so feel free to give pointers and post pictures

Find Image
Open image in photoshop
View -> Show -> Grid
Edit -> Pref -> guides, grids & slices
Change the grid 'length' to pixels, and set the number to whatever size tileset you have (your picture will probably look better with a square tileset)

Then

View -> Snap To -> Grid
Layer -> new

After that just trace the picture as smoothly as you can while following the grid. You should end up with a very good idea of what you need to do if DF.

I was looking less for instructions, and more for pictures and descriptions of actual mosaics that have been made.

amuse me.

Here are the major floor mosaics in my fort, maybe they'll give you some ideas.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit: I guess I can add that the most important thing, I think, is finding colors which complement each other. It's surprisingly easy to find colors that clash, so before I start a tiling project I always take every colored bar or block I have and first just build a bunch of floor tiles in the middle of nowhere so I can see what the colors will actually look like in floor tile form. This also lets you see if two colors you hadn't thought about go nicely together, and vise versa.

Also, remember that a floor tile and a wall of the same material will often look very different once you build them.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

You could try something like this.

You can see it, from spaaaaccce

Seriously, I have no idea how copperblazes manages to stay in first, four places ahead of that beauty.  I mean, just zoom out and look around in it for a bit.  It may be smaller than copperblazes, but it's much better designed.

Not as grand as the others but something different.  Wanted somewhere my nobles could plot the defense of the port and move little models of goblins around.

Egad! The top of its head is shaped like a pair of buttocks!

On a more serious note, this thread makes me fervently wish for more than 16 possible colors.

I remember seeing one in the maps that had a lot of ornate designs.  Yin/yang, different patterned rooms... I wish I kept a link
