A couple of questions.
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:14:16 pm »

1. How do you make a vertical shaft? I was digging an exhaust for my magma lines to power my forge, but I was kind of haphazardly digging a shaft down and my dwarves kept getting stuck. Is there an optimal way to make a shaft straight up/down?

2. Is there a way to tell a workshop what materials to use? For example if I want my mechanics shop to only use fire safe stones, or if I want to make furniture out of a certain type of rock.

If anyone can answer these questions that would be helpful, thanks.

Use the stairs for a shaft, the liquids will fall down the stairs and your dwarf can dig down and then climb up.

Right now you can really only tell a workshop to use a certain material by storing it closest to that shop. Set up a stockpile and limit it to only that material you want, and forbid it from your other stockpiles, so they will move it all there.
