Can you give specific clothing or jewelry to dwarves?
« on: May 21, 2010, 12:06:14 pm »

I picked up a nice ring tonight from a trader, which happens to be made of emerald, which one of my legendary miners indicates they really like.  Is there any way to give this non-weapon, non-armor valuable item to said dwarf?

Also, I thought at one time that it was possible to remove items from the posession of caged enemies.  I captured a half dozen goblin raiders the other day, and couldn't figure out how to take their items and leave them alive in their cage for eventual use to give my dwarves live training dummies.  I eventually just placed the cages, linked them to a lever, flooded the room, then pulled the lever.  Shortly after that, getting the items was no problem, but my dwarves lost out on their training :(

I ask both of these together because I figure they might be related somehow.  I haven't been able to find anything in the wiki except a reference to getting children back from goblin snatchers, which I've not had to try, so I don't know if they have normal inventory screens when there is a snatched child in their posession.

How did I miss the existence of this thread?
(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

i believe it involves using the d-b-d menu to designate the area where the cage is for dumping, then undumping the cage itself from the stocks menu.  All the items the prisoner had remain marked for dumping, and the dwarves should strip them with no risk of releasing the prisoner.  I'm not sure if it matters if the cage is in an animal stockpile or constructed somewhere.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

bump.

I am very curious as to how to give specific items to specific dwarves or how to put specific items in a certain dwarf's coffer.

I don't know how or if you can assign specific possessions, but a brute force way to get it close would be to dump the item into the desired dwarf's bedroom.  They may be more likely to claim it if it's close.

Will a dwarf ever claim something like a figurine or a musical instrument? Or are such items only really usable as trade goods?

They are only usable as trade goods, some day they will be usable objects though.

No there's no way to specifically give dwarves trade goods. Once the economy kicks in, they'll buy them themselves (at 0 cost if they're legendary or nobles) but you can't choose when they do that or which item they buy.

While it won't help for this fort, if you really want to assign a specific trade good to a dwarf's room, you can mod in a custom building to display it. Go to the modding forum and look for the "this belongs in a museum" thread.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.
