Twice I have noticed a flock of bats coming out of the trade depot while / just after trading. Different games, .33a (if I remember right) and .33b.

The second time, I am quite sure that there were no bats in cages being traded.

Is this desired behavior?

I have a save right after this happened, and a save before trading which may reproduce it.
